Ladytron

ARTIST / BAND: Ladytron

SONG (MP3): Black Cat

ALBUM: Velocifero

FILE UNDER: Electro / New Wave / Other

LABEL: Nettwerk

INFO: The band famous for their super popular 'Seventeen' (from 2002) are set to release their new album Velocifero in June this year.
The first single from it will apparently be 'Black Cat' – it's dark, commanding, synth-smothered, bolshi, and the lyrics are in Bulgarian. It pretty much sounds like vocalist Mira Aroyo is punishing you. In one of those really good ways.

SONG (MP3): Morning After Midnight

ALBUM: Sixes & Sevens

FILE UNDER: Rock / Folk / Alternative

LABEL: Rough Trade Records

INFO: Green is formerly one half of Moldy Peaches (with Kimya Dawson). This is his fifth solo album. His music is reminiscent of Bacharach and Brel, and he's created his own brand of playful pop while refining it with each release. He's toured with the likes of The Libertines, Badly Drawn Boy, Ben Kweller, and The Strokes. "A queasy mix of super-sharp realism, clammy surrealism, and elegant melody" - Mojo. "It always amazes me how he can express such deep meaning with such twisted humor. Adam is eccentric and down to earth, with newfound technical proficiency over a wider spectrum of styles.

INFO: Alaska In Winter came about when art student, Brandon Bethancourt spent a semester recording music in an isolated cabin on the south coast of Alaska. Upon arrival back in New Mexico, he teamed up with Zach Condon of Beirut, Heather Trost of A Hack And A Hacksaw (a Neutral Milk Hotel side-project), and Rosina Roybal (who played viola in the Kanye West symphony) and thus finished the album 'Dance Party In The Balkans'.

LABEL: Expanding Brooklyn

INFO: Growing up in a small town between Seattle and the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, Monroe, music always provided a comfort to Joshua Morrison. Exposed to a broad musical spectrum as a child, Morrison gained an appreciation for all styles. His mother first introduced him to the symphony, a family event where seven year-old Joshua was forced into his Sunday’s finest: a dress shirt and a clip-on tie. His father (who worked at the local prison as a guard) imposed his musical influence differently: Joshua, as a passenger in his father’s flat black 1981 Chevy pickup, listened to his father’s musings (which include where his father first heard the given song, when the song had been released, who recorded, etc) about such artists as the Moody Blues, Glenn Campbell and everything in between.

ARTIST / BAND: DEVOTCHKA

SONG (MP3): Along the Way

ALBUM: A Mad and Faithful Telling

FILE UNDER: Indie / Rock

LABEL: ANTI

INFO: The times have finally caught up with acclaimed Denver quartet DeVotchKa. Not long ago when the band unloaded their instruments - a violin, a tuba and an accordion, among others - into a rock club, they were told they must be in the wrong place. They created music that was Grammy nominated (DeVotchKa created the soundtrack for the indie smash Oscar winning film Little Miss Sunshine) without the benefit of a huge promotion team or runaway budget, instead relying only on their own efforts by self-releasing their records. And they crafted gems of songs by mixing a beautiful blend of Eastern European bohemia, American prairie rock and distinctive indie and called it pop, rather than world, music.

The first Shearwater release to be made up entirely of songs by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Meiburg, Palo Santo resembles previous Shearwater albums only incidentally. ARTIST / BAND: Peter Moren

SONG (MP3): Social Competence

ALBUM: The Last Tycoon

FILE UNDER: Folk Rock / Pop / Acoustic

LABEL: Quarterstick/Touch & Go, Wichita/Cooperative Music

INFO: On April 8, 2008, Quarterstick Records will release the highly anticipated solo album from Peter Morén, the lead singer of Swedish indie megastars Peter Bjorn and John. The Last Tycoon may be Peters first solo album, but it has been several years in the making. Throughout the hectic years of songwriting, recording and touring with Peter Bjorn and John in support of their infectious breakout album Writers Block, Peter never rested. What emerged from that period is an intimate 10-track collection of delicate and introspective songs from one of the most promising young storytellers of the decade. Recorded and mixed over two years in tiny apartments and rehearsal studios in Sweden and the U.S., The Last Tycoon is built around the basic foundation of Peter and his guitar. The album has a distinctly homemade feel that feeds from the folk singer-songwriter tradition but still incorporates strings, synthesizers, vibraphones, percussion, a musical saw, and even a drum machine or two.

Some tracks have an identifiable post punk syncopation (most notably the absolutely scorching "Northern Territory"), others are more like echoy, countrified blues ("Black Cat John Brown"), and still more are fairly difficult to classify: a quieter Pixies, early Radiohead with pizzicato strings, Soft Bulletin-era Flaming Lips with The Strokes, and more. SONG (MP3): Danger!

ALBUM: Danger!

FILE UNDER: Indie Pop

LABEL: Labrador

INFO: Their story began as most others does. They came from the same town, met through mutual friends, had similar interests and musical preferences, made a web-based christmas calender, dabbled with electro-pop. And so on, your ususal fodder for biographies. But it was after trying to make a Christmas song by sampling a Children’s choir from Youtube they’re mutual musical project really started to evolve. This was in the end of 2006. Due to the lack of computer, and recording, knowledge it took several months to complete it. The final version missed it’s deadline, Christmas, with half a year. But the song suggested what they wanted to do musically together and marked the start of The Sound of Arrows. After this they started playing around with a couple of samplers, a harp, some strings, technicolors and huge crescendos. Their inital intention was to record a song or two and then move on. But that changed once their first song ’Narrow Escape’ garnered some apprectiation.

13 ghosts

ARTIST / BAND: 13 ghosts

SONG (MP3): Beyond The Door

ALBUM: The Strangest Colored Lights

FILE UNDER: Indie

LABEL: Skybucket Records

INFO: The core of 13ghosts is duo Brad Armstrong and Buzz Russell, who trade off vocal and songwriting duties throughout the album and whose voices and influences often contrast dramatically. Russell's songs, including "Trodden Way" and "The Trouble With Actual Organs", pair strong pop melodies with spacey atmospherics, recalling bands like the Comas and Modest Mouse. Armstrong has a slightly wider range; in fact, I thought he was two different people at first. He alternates between a low-key, world-weary voice on tracks like "Just Got Dead" and "Song from Down Here" and a louder, brasher rasp on "The Storm" and "Worldshaker". His "Robert J." is the album's centerpiece; perhaps the most straightforward melody and arrangement on Cicada, it's a cautionary tale about a local singer scared of being swallowed up by his music, and it sounds like it could have been written by or about The Band. Armstrong doesn't romanticize or sentimentalize Robert J., but he and Russell clearly identify with him and certainly sympathize with his predicament, especially when 13ghosts' own music threatens to swallow them up.

The Black & White Years

ARTIST / BAND: The Black & White Years

SONG (MP3): Power to Change

FILE UNDER: Electro / Experimental / Post punk

INFO: The Black & White Years have been making music together (known as The Trees, Paper Tiger, The Leavers and other names too embarrassing to mention,) for almost four years. Fame and fortune have come slowly (actually, not at all) for The Years, who are (at the moment) John Aldridge, Scott Butler, and Landon Thompson. Scott thinks he's God's gift to songwriting, but his true talent is making others miserable. John builds things out of balloons and wires. Landon is like your step-mom on steroids, but hotter. According to rumor, The Years gave up very profitable underwear-modeling careers to focus on making music. They are so sexy and hot. They also are masters of jigsaw puzzles and quilting. Indeed, the Years have been known to make some kick-ass, almost revolutionary, quilts. Now, B&WY are biding time, waiting for the global takeover that is surely to come. Therefore, all of you mortals, sitting couched in your complacency, prepare yourselves for the days ahead, when Black and White will cover the earth, blocking out the sun and rocking the planet with them mad ass dope skillz.

SONG (MP3): I'm Pretty Sure This Is Someone Else's Song, But I Couldn't Figure Out Whose So I'm Keeping It!

ALBUM: The Mother EP

FILE UNDER: Indie / Pop / Folk

INFO: Having emerged in 2004 with the promising “An Introduction to Sex Rock,” Danburry nearly made his first release obsolete the following year when he released “Besides: Are We Just Playing Around Out Here or Do We Mean What We Say?”

It was, I kid you not, leaps and bounds more sonically advanced than his first stab at megastardom — and, to boot, the tunes were as expertly crafted as the batch on his debut.

And, since the new album is not yet complete, “Live in France!” (recorded with a makeshift “band” dubbed “Fatal Fury and the Lasercats!”) more or less serves as a reminder of how this beloved singer/songwriter built such a devoted fan base.

Confides Jon, who taught himself to play bar chords with a distortion pedal via Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Sepultura, “I have to admit that at first the production freaked me out. FILE UNDER: Indie / Minimalist / Experimental

At first Beatrice was deemed the groups interpretive dancer as Anna and Cas had declared that at 5, her voice had "not yet developed". Clearly, these were matters of utmost seriousness. In the beginning the songs were mused from hours or lulling younger siblings to sleep. Years passed and our passion for writing and performing flourished. Together we discovered William Butler Yeats, Edger Allen Poe, Shakespeare, our fathers rythm and blues record collection and acting. Homeschooling gave us all the time in the world to write and do improv to our hearts content. We made recordings of our first demos.

SONG (MP3): Where Da G's Featuring UGK

ALBUM: Dizzee 12"

FILE UNDER: Grime / Hip Hop

INFO: “ABC,” as the Jackson Five once put it, “it’s easy as 1-2-3”: Dizzee
Rascal’s third album, “Maths & English,” is the most complete,
intense and thrilling British hip-hop record ever made. Bar none. From
the Korn-inspired metal guitars of the barnstorming first single
“Sirens,” to the vivacious Bugsy Malone-inspired backchat of Lily Allen
(on the irresistible “Wannabe”), every track on this album seems to
find a new way of grabbing the listener’s attention. But the amazing
thing about “Maths & English” is the way the huge number of
different styles and ideas that it showcases come together as the
perfect vehicle for one man’s voice. Whether Dizzee is going mano a
mano with American gangsta rap legends Bun B and Pimp C (“Where’s Da
G’s”) or paying his dues to his UK heritage by collaborating with drum
and bass legend Shy FX; whether he’s sampling Lyn Collins on the
straightest hip-hop track he’s ever done (“Pussy’ole”) or going way out
there to a Martial Arts film soundtrack of knives being sharpened
(“World Outside”), it never takes more than half a bar of his raw,
guttural, urgent rhyming to realise you’re in the presence of the

Quick-fast riddims with scattered snare chatting slap up against future electro funk, fat beat stabs, and sub bass switch-ups. Grimy digital soca (what you don’t know, this is the next level jump up, run the towel) gets lit up beside laser beams slicing through congas. Electro pop with right amount of fucked up double-up gets melodically crunked out. Bodyrocking meets necksnapping in all the right places.

ALBUM: This Town

FILE UNDER: Rock / Acoustic / Indie

LABEL: G.A.S. Records

INFO: I started my little musical life in 1992, when I auditioned for a local South London band called ‘Higher Ground’. I joined the band as a percussionist, but when the lead singer, a local respected DJ Andy Nichols, left the band I stepped up to the microphone for the very first time! We build up such a large following that it caught the attention of the legendary Paul Weller, who asked us to open up for him at his Crystal Palace Bowl concert in the summer of 1997. This was the highest point for the band, and shortly after we split. I had always kept up my percussion playing while in Higher Ground, and I played live gigs all over the world for famous club nights such as Ministry of Sound, Pacha and Manumission. I carried on my session playing and played for successful dance artists such as Evolution and Shiva.
