Muzorama 050926 / The New Psychedelia

This edition of Muzorama explores psychedelia not as a revival, but as a language that has escaped its original genre.

Across the selection, psychedelic ideas appear in very different forms: through folk, jazz, dub, kraut-inspired repetition, experimental pop, electronic production and global musical traditions. The common thread is less about vintage references and more about altered perception — repetition, unusual spatial production, unstable structures, acoustic instruments treated electronically, and music that gradually dissolves the boundaries between song, groove and atmosphere.

The journey moves from the hypnotic global grooves of VuVuVu feat. Mervealice, Dos Santos and Manuela Ocampo, through the dreamier worlds of Baby Cool and Aldous Harding, into the more fractured and experimental terrain of Wavering, BLKE and Moon Attendant.

Further on, Yanuka, Misha Panfilov, Anadol & Marie Klock and Laraaji expand psychedelia through jazz, folk memory, analogue electronics and improvisation, while foodman pushes the final section toward a more synthetic and disorienting space.

Rather than looking backwards to psychedelic rock, Muzorama 050926 follows a contemporary underground tendency in which psychedelia becomes a method: a way of stretching rhythm, texture, memory and form.

Featuring: VuVuVu feat. Mervealice, Dos Santos, Manuela Ocampo, Baby Cool, Aldous Harding, Wavering, Misha Panfilov, BLKE, Moon Attendant, Yanuka, Laraaji, Anadol & Marie Klock, foodman and others.

Kim Mayo (music and video)

facebook.com/kimberly.mayo.31

Kim Mayo, a conservatory-trained vocalist with an affinity for lush
orchestration, tender melodies, and surreal lyrics, has quietly
side-stepped onto the internet with the unveiling of her debut single,
“long slow love’s hum.” Mayo’s delicately crafted song is a perfect
amalgamation of her diverse influences, drawing upon elements of folk,
pop, jazz, and chamber music.  The result is a soaring representation
of her love of language and her skill for weaving her thoughtful
melodies between sublimely constructed arrangements that defy easy
categorization.  Mayo's and her (ten!) bandmates met while studying at
the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.  They recorded a
collection of five of Mayo’s singles live at The Record Company in one
afternoon this past December.

Crystal Bright and the Silver Hands

ARTIST / BAND: Crystal Bright and the Silver Hands
SONG (MP3): "Especially Your Mother"
ALBUM: Muses & Bones
LABEL: s/r
INFO: Out in the woods she lived, all alone. At least that’s what it felt like, never belonging to any one group and having a penchant for the oppressed. Crystal did not come from a musical family, and unlike so many children who are forced into music lessons, at age seven she practically ran away to her piano teacher’s house down the street – books in her basket – pedaling as fast as she could down the gravel road – dust flying behind.

When she was still young, a little demon told her that she shouldn’t sing, that it sounded better when she just played the piano, but she was determined to ignore the demon and sing her heart out anyway. But sometimes the influence of the demon rendered her silent and still, and her hands seemed to be void of life.read more from the source...

Other Lives

ARTIST / BAND: Other Lives

MP3s: For 12 / Tamer Animals / Song Song

ALBUM: Tamer Animals

FILE UNDER: Folk, Folk-Rock, Indie Pop

LABEL: TBD Records

INFO: There’s no track this writer’s thrashed more this year than Other Lives’ single For 12. It’s suspenseful, dreamy and awestruck in equal measures, combining undulating strings (possibly Mellotron), lightly galloping Morricone rhythms, subtle shades of piano and acoustic guitar and vocals that run the gauntlet from sighing to falsetto. Imagine an eagle’s eye view over an unbroken stretch of Brokeback Mountain prairie. Or imagine Fleet Foxes influenced by Radiohead’s Pyramid Song. And if For 12 is the absolute jewel here, the rest isn’t far behind.

Big Tree

ARTIST / BAND: Big Tree

MP3: "This Fall"

ALBUM: This New Year

FILE UNDER: Indie / Folk / Psychedelic

LABEL: s/r

INFO:Once upon a time, five fresh-faced and naive students ventured to Sarah Lawrence College, where each one imagined all of his and her hopes and dreams would come true.  As fate would have it, all five enrolled in the jazz program where they learned about tritone substitutions and how to hold their whiskey.  Each night the music building would stay open until 2am, where they would practice their instruments until security locked up the building and sent them home.  Never ready to say good night, the five friends would stay up a few hours more listening to records and sharing ideas in a smoky dorm room where the inspiration never ran dry.
