This edition of Muzorama begins in collective motion and gradually turns inward. House euphoria, acid pressure and rave energy open the journey before giving way to UK bass, gqom, dancehall-inflected rhythms and fractured techno.

The centre of the mix marks a transition: the physical force of the dancefloor dissolves into Shakali’s electro-acoustic environment, the organic electronic psychedelia of Bibio and Dorian Concept, and Ital Tek’s cinematic fusion of guitar, Rhodes and unstable rhythm. From there, L’Rain, Loraine James with Tirzah, and Tricky with Marta carry the selection into a more intimate world of experimental song, memory and emotional dislocation.

Featuring music by Prospa & Cloonee, Posthuman, Louie Vega reworked by Windom R, Beatrice M., DJ Lag, Anaïs, Stylo G & Lady Leshurr, Answer Code Request, Shakali, Bibio & Dorian Concept, Ital Tek, L’Rain, Loraine James & Tirzah, and Tricky & Marta.

As always, the eclecticism is not the absence of direction. It is the direction: different scenes, tempos and musical languages connected through rhythm, texture and atmosphere.

MUZORAMA 070826 / POST-RAVE DREAMS

This edition of Muzorama moves through the afterimages of rave culture: machine memory, ambient space, fractured rhythm and melodic electronic music that feels simultaneously archival and futuristic.

The mix begins with Mind Control’s “Life For Ever (Infinite Dream Mix)”, establishing a direct connection to the emotional language of early ambient techno. From there, BAE BAE and Kid Drama bring memory, bass pressure and atmospheric breakbeats into the present, while IJO and Bot1500 explore the sampler-driven zone between jungle, IDM and intricate machine rhythm.

The middle section becomes more unstable and experimental. Anastasia Kristensen’s “Magpie Song” introduces an organic, almost ritualistic atmosphere before Temisan Adoki and the Objekt remix of james K shift the mix toward fragmented techno, deconstructed club music and abstract pop. John Tejada & Sainte Béatrix then restore a sense of melodic space, followed by the deeper dubwise pressure of Sub Basics & Pugilist.

In its final movement, the mix opens toward light. John Beltran’s “Sunrise and the Life We Live” brings warmth and emotional clarity, while Heogen returns the sequence to detailed, introspective IDM. Four Tet adds a final burst of rhythmic invention before D3’s “Unexpected” closes the journey with a direct but open-ended electronic momentum.

Post-Rave Dreams is not a nostalgic reconstruction of rave. It is a mix about what remains afterwards: blurred memories, unfinished futures, warm machines and rhythms that continue to mutate long after the original moment has disappeared.

Varra — “Penguinbiome”

“Penguinbiome” by Varra sounds like a small, fast-moving ecosystem built out of broken jazz, cartoon logic and digital nervous energy.

The track is barely two and a half minutes long, but it refuses to stay in one place. IDM, jazz fusion, drum & bass, math rock and jazztronica all appear inside it — not as polished genre references, but as quick flashes of movement. It feels playful, unstable and highly detailed, like a video game level designed by someone who listens to fusion records at the wrong speed.

Varra is a deliberately elusive internet-native artist. The official Bandcamp profile gives almost no conventional biography, only a strange, casual self-description: music, video, playful ambiguity, and a large catalogue of self-released work. That lack of polished presentation is part of the charm. “Penguinbiome” does not feel like a product from a label campaign. It feels like something produced inside a private creative universe and released directly into the open.

MUZORAMA recommends “Penguinbiome” for listeners who like electronic music when it becomes playful, hyper-detailed and rhythmically strange — somewhere between jazz fusion, IDM, drum & bass and a cartoon animal running through a computer.
