MP3s: Go North / Hands Up

ALBUM: A Cautionary Tale

FILE UNDER: Electronica / Indie / Rock

LABEL: New Granada

INFO: Despite amassing a following, scene status, and praise from regional press right out of the gate, Orlando indie-rock band The Pauses released their debut album A Cautionary Tale after only about, oh, TWO YEARS of existence. The official excuse is something about wanting do to things "properly." So they saved money through a successful Kickstarter campaign (a marvel since their fans' bank accounts have a perfectly inverse relationship with their obvious wealth in taste) spurred by a cute handmade video ( and headed up to Baltimore to record this bad boy with the legendary J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines), even enlisting three-quarters of the dude's own band. His wife too? Sure, why not.

MP3: THE KNOCKS - MAKE IT BETTER (DOM REMIX) / When You've Got Music  / 'Make It Better' MP3
ALBUM: "Make It Better"
FILE UNDER: electro
LABEL: Neon Gold Records / HeavyRoc
INFO: This one comes courtesy of the Massachusetts noisy electro/rock group DOM.  Ever since Pitchfork sang their praises these guys have been all over the place and we were very happy when they said they would do a remix for us.  With a fat gritty analog bass over driving drums leading the way followed by a shimmery rat-a-tat-esque lead chorus synth, this remix changes up the whole vibe of the song in a great way.  This remix sounds like it could be in your favorite 80s action film and we love it.  THANKS DOM

UNKLE  is pleased to release the six song 'The Answer' EP which includes two new songs, a collaboration with hip-hop prodigy Lupe Fiasco and a remix by original UNKLE member Tim Goldsworthy. The record drops today in the UK, but those in the US are going to have to wait until tomorrow. In celebration of the release, UNKLE is releasing the track "Runaway, Lupe's Revenge (Lupe Fiasco vs UNKLE Reconstruction)" online for free. Our friends over at RCRD LBL got their hands on it first and you can grab it here.
In support of the release of The Answer EP, UNKLE will be embarking on their first US appearances in three years at select cities in the US and Mexico during the month of October. Tickets available via See below for a full list of US dates.
The hip-hop reworking of 'The Runaway' off UNKLE's most recent album 'Where Did The Night Fall' sees Lupe Fiasco rhyming with an untouchable, laid-back cool as splintered synths and a shuddering bass-line envelope around him. Original UNKLE member, Tim Goldsworthy (LCD Soundsystem/DFA), morphs the subtle, desert-scorched previous single 'Follow Me Down' into a breathless, urgent 8-minute epic. The cinematic 'Separate Half' featuresSan Francisco quartet Lumerians with vocals by Rebecca Coseboom. Pulsating and airy, 'Separate Half' takes listeners on a journey passing through kaleidoscope worlds. The quiet, dusty lament of 'Country Tune' builds to become vast and expansive in scope, anchored by fragile vocal from UNKLE collaborator Gavin Clark.

MP3: , "Solid Copper Huntress" / "Maple Mountain"

ALBUM: Yeth, Yeth, Yeth

FILE UNDER: krautrock, electonica, indie

LABEL: Monotreme Records

Thee More Shallows singer Dee Kesler and Ral Partha Vogalbacher lyricist Chadwick Donald Bidwell have joined forces to form a superduo called Fops. In the short time that Fops has been a band, they've already completed two full length albums. The first CD/LP, Yeth, Yeth, Yeth will be released worldwide this fall via UK label Monotreme Records (65Daysofstatic, Nedry, Barzin).
Check out the first MP3s from the album, "Solid Copper Huntress" (HERE) and "Maple Mountain" (HERE).
Taking their musical cues from the syncopated electronic figures of Krautrockers such as Cluster and Faust, and the propulsive, brooding pop of the bands they grew up listening to in the 80's, the duo recorded two albums: Album 1, Yeth Yeth Yeth, will be released in September 2010, and Album 2, Priests In Them Caves, will follow in early 2011.
Both albums are novels at heart, investigating the possible and impossible, gaudy and fantastical, mundane and downright depressing pasts and futures of a single protagonist. In the world of Fops, Kesler is the narrator, telling stories in Bidwell's singular lyrical style.
The vinyl format comes on 180 gm audiophile vinyl and includes a free promo CD of the album.

Nick Butcher

ARTIST / BAND: Nick Butcher

MP3: "Minutes Overlap"

FILE UNDER: experimental, electronica,

LABEL: hometape

INFO: A kindred spirit/long lost friend originally from Tennessee and now in Chicago, Illinois, Nick was introduced to us by Jay Ryan of The Bird Machine. Nick is a talented painter, screen printer, book maker, musician, funny story teller, noise gadget procurement specialist, Southern accent purveyor, and I'm sure some other things we just don't know about yet. He kick started our side label, Placetapes, with his fantastic hand-screened book and cd, The Complicated Bicycle, and is about to head to Europe this Fall for an artist residency. He will be producing new work, which we will show you as we get our hands on some. We can't say enough about him. Look for new surprises on Placetapes.
