LEMONADE

ARTIST / BAND: LEMONADE

MP3: "Lifted"

ALBUM: Pure Moods EP

FILE UNDER: Indie/Pop/Garage/Electronica

LABEL: True Panther

INFO: This is Lemonade's follow-up to their praised and explosive debut album. This EP is an utterly unique take on electronic dance music, this time focused and melodic. It incorporates more explicit soca, dub, and calypso influences into Lemonade's existing ravey palate. Even if those sounds are channelled through 16-bit samples and city stories the record has a certain wetness to it- a rich vegetation of sounds. Tight electronic arrangements layered with Alex Pasternak's fiercely clattered drums, Ben Steidel's invitingly rubbery bass and Callan Clendenin's wobbly vocal harmonies float in and out of scope. The whistles of Bedstuy's West Indian Day Parade ring out in "Banana Republic", Ballearic synths carress "Remain In Jah". The EP's leading track "Lifted" somehow submerges its anthemic chorus and raindrop synths under a deafening waterfall. It feels good. If their debut was citric slime, this EP is an orange; firm and almost uniform in its peel, sweet and wet inside.

Caribou

ARTIST / BAND: Caribou

MP3: Odessa

ALBUM: Swim

FILE UNDER: New Psychodelia

LABEL: Merge/City Slang

INFO: If Dan Snaith has mastered one aspect of is music career, it's change. Not the remodeling or renovation, sort, more the alterations and adaptations with purpose (not even including the weird story of the Dictators' Dick Manitoba forcing Snaith to give up his pseudonym in 2004). The steady upward progression in replayability between 2001's glitchy Start Breaking My Heart and 2005's towering Milk of Human Kindness feels like a problem of some sort was solved. Which makes room for the comparative left-turn of Andorra, which both felt like a huge surprise (songs!) and a logical extension (songs with insane drumming!) of what he'd always been doing.

MP3: The Darker Place

ALBUM: This Wilderlessness

FILE UNDER: Indie / Experimental / Afro-beat

Tiga

Tiga: Ciao!

ARTIST / BAND: Tiga

MP3: Mind Dimension

ALBUM: Ciao!

FILE UNDER: electro

LABEL: Last Gang Records

INFO: Montreal’s Tiga seems best known here for his DJ skills and stellar remixes, but Ciao! is actually his second studio album. For some reason the U.S. mostly slept on 2006’sSexor, even in spite of its tracks like “You Gonna Want Me” and “Good as Gold” becoming classic dance tunes. Like his debut, Ciao! is worth noting: His second effort may just be the best dance full-length of the

MP3: “Please Don’t”

ALBUM: Here Lies Love

FILE UNDER: NewNew Wave

LABEL: Nonesuch Records

INFO: Norman Cook, aka Fat Boy Slim, is no stranger to high-profile collaborations. But his latest project might just take the cake. In fact, it does… like totally.

As we told you back in October, Cook and David Byrne have once again teamed up for a rather unique project. Following in the footsteps ofThe Brighton Port Authority’s I Think We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat, the legendary duo hit the studio with a number of other high-profile musicians for a concept album based on the life of former first lady of the Philippines Imelda Marcos — you know, the chick with all the shoes.

The Dustbowl Revival

ARTIST / BAND: The Dustbowl Revival

MP3: "Falling Down"

ALBUM: You Can't Go Back To The Garden Of Eden

FILE UNDER: Post punk / Blues / Folk

INFO: The Dustbowl Revival is a Venice, CA-based folk orchestra that merges old school gypsy rhythms with bluegrass, gospel, jug-band, jump blues and the hot swing of the 1930’s to form a spicy roots cocktail. Known for their raucous dance-inducing live sets, the Dustbowl Revival plays what some call hillbilly jazz—the original front porch rock n’ roll. Think Dylan and The Band in Newport meets Louis Armstrong in New Orleans meets Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeroes on the beaches of LA. It’s young people playing upbeat, vintage music and it’s all written and composed by howlin’ and stompin’ 24 year old frontman Zach Lupetin who first envisioned putting together a kind of roots supergroup when he moved from Chicago (his father is a blues harp virtuoso who sometimes sits in), to Michigan and then to sunny Los Angeles three years ago. The goal? Why, to make people feel good, of course.

Josh Rouse

MP3: I Will Live on Islands

ALBUM: El Turista

FILE UNDER: Garage / Lounge

LABEL: Yep Roc

INFO: Unexpected and utterly sublime, this sultry song cycle will shuffle seamlessly in tandem with Getz/Gilberto and Graceland, albums as boldly surprising in their eras as El Turista is in this one. The record marks a new direction for the critically acclaimed cult artist, while offering the musical sophistication and emotional depth Rouse's devoted constituents have come to expect from him thanks to a consistently enthralling body of work highlighted by the modern-day landmarks 1972 (2003) and Nashville (2005), both of which are generously sampled on the marvelous 2008 Rhino retrospective The Best of the Rykodisc years

Satellite Crush

ARTIST / BAND: Satellite Crush

Satellite Crush - Paris To London by MikeRog10

ALBUM: Arrows of Eros

FILE UNDER: Indie / Pop / Rock

LABEL: Disk Faktory.

INFO: After graduating from art school in Ohio, Elliot moved across the Atlantic to London, England with hopes of starting a band. Heavily influenced by British music, and determined to follow this path, he barely made ends meet by bar tending at a nearby pub and busking on the streets. In the extreme loneliness that followed, he spent much of his spare time writing songs in his small studio flat in central London. Having just left the girl with whom he was in love with, naturally she became the subject of many songs to follow.

Slow Six

ARTIST / BAND: Slow Six
MP3: The Night You Left New York
ALBUM: Tomorrow Becomes You
FILE UNDER: Rock / Experimental / Electroacoustic
LABEL: Western Vinyl
INFO:
Western Vinyl (current or former home of Balmorhea, Dirty Projectors, Here We Go Magic, Ola Podrida, J. Tillman, and more) announces its first release of 2010. The Austin-based independent label will release Tomorrow Becomes You, the new album by Slow Six, on January 26th, 2010.
At the turn of the millennium in downtown New York, in an era of Moby and the Strokes, Slow Six was pulling up in front of clubs, loading in music stands, video projectors, a battery of string players, and a desktop computer programmed with custom software. Reading down its twenty-minute electro-acoustic scores to stunned audiences, Slow Six helped redefine what was possible when those who grew up with both classical and rock music re-imagined their surrounding musical landscape in their own image.

Jaga Jazzist

ARTIST / BAND: Jaga Jazzist
MP3: 'One Armed Bandit' (Radio Edit)
ALBUM: One Armed Bandit
FILE UNDER: jazz-rock-experimental
LABEL: Ninja Tune / Rough Trade
INFO: The nine piece Norwegian jazz-rock-experimental behemoth that is Jaga Jazzist return to the fray with their stunning new album, “One Armed Bandit”. All galloping rhythms, and grandiloquent reach, main man Lars Horntveth describes the new sound, tongue-a-little-in-cheek, as “Wagner meets Fela Kuti!” Certainly we find it harder to imagine a better soundtrack being written for the first Nollywood Viking epic.

THE TENANT

ARTIST / BAND: THE TENANT

MP3: The Stranger / Visitors

ALBUM: Is Listening/Visitors

FILE UNDER: Indie Pop

LABEL: New Granada Records

INFO: The airy, dark textures on The Tenant's debut album will certainly resonate with Summerbirds fans, especially the song "The Stranger," whose thudding bass line and buzzing synth are particularly Summerbirds-like. LeMaster's breathy harmonies, though, give Is Listening a more organic, gentle vibe than Register's previous recordings. The EP feels effortless and intricate at the same time, full of ringing tones, intense rhythms and breezy melodies.'

Ben Klock

ARTIST / BAND: Ben Klock

MP3: FACT mix 31

ALBUM: Exclusive for Fact magazine

FILE UNDER: Techno / House / Electronica

LABEL: Fact magazine

INFO: Along with Marcel Dettmann, Len Faki and Andre Galluzzi, Klock is resident DJ at Berghain, the legendary Berlin club that houses Panoramabar and is the very nucleus of the city's thriving party scene. As both DJs and producers, Klock and his cohorts have developed a tough, streamlined big-room sound which recalls the 90s work of Jeff Mills and Basic Channels but invested with a certain lithe, skippy quality learned from modern-day minimal and dubstep. Having co-created the prescientBlank Scenario mini-LP with Marcel Dettmann, Klock has released several dancefloor-oriented EPs under the banner of Klockworks; last week saw the release of his debut solo album, One, an incredibly moody and stirring record that featuring the vocals of Elif Bicer and the first Ostgut Ton release since Shed's Shedding The Past.
