ARTIST / BAND: RAVEONETTES
SONG (MP3): ALY, WALK WITH ME
ALBUM: Lust Lust Lust
FILE UNDER: Indie Pop
LABEL: Sony Records
INFO: The Raveonettes are a Danish pop duo consisting of Sune Rose Wagner (on guitar, instruments, vocals) and Sharin Foo (on bass and vocals). Their music is characterized by close two-part vocal harmonies inspired by The Everly Brothers[citation needed], coupled with hard-edged electric guitar overlaid with liberal doses of noise. Their songs juxtapose the structural and chordal simplicity of 50s and 60s rock with intense electric instrumentation, driving beats and often dark lyrical content, similar to another of the band's influences, The Velvet Underground. "We are not scared of being blunt about what the references are in our music," said Sharin Foo. "For instance, if you look at our name, The Raveonettes, it's a complete direct reference to The Ronettes and Buddy Holly Rave On. So, in that sense, we're pretty clear about it

Walla's past recordings of his own songs (occasionally made available online under the name Martin Youth Auxiliary) have mostly been quickly-recorded lo-fi sketches unintended for widespread release. His upcoming release, titled field manual, represents the first time his own songs have been given the studio attention and thought-out approach to recording for which he is in such demand by others.

ALBUM: This Town

LABEL: G.A.S. Records
INFO: Grammy Award Winner with the band Dirty Vegas, Singer/Songwriter Steve Smith has taken 2 years away, to record his first Solo Album. He moved from his native London England to Massachusetts to find the inspiration to finally achieve his dream. Recorded at the legendary Camp Street Studios (Formerly Fort Apache) many Musicians of all genre’s and styles came to play on Steve’s Album, including Anthony Saffery (Cornershop/Beck) , Actor Jon Savage (Deer Hunter/Hair), Terry Barber a counter-tenor from the NYSO, Jay Ungar the principal violinist for James Horner (Titanic/Legends of the Fall) and Rob Swift (X-ecuitioners/Quincy Jones). The result is a collection of songs that blend folk/rock and electronica, and Steve’s craft of songwriting that fuses all those styles together. The title track, ‘This Town’ features an inspired speech recorded by the acclaimed actor Jon Savage, and sets the mood for the whole Album. Xread more from the source...
ARTIST / BAND: MAGNET SCHOOL
SONG (MP3): XX
ALBUM: Tonight We Drink....Tomorrow We Battle The Evil At Hand
FILE UNDER: Rock / Indie / Alternative
LABEL: Arclight Records
INFO: Last year's debut Magnet School EP, Crush, had punch and power, maneuvering through melody, riff, and echo like only veteran rockers could. Tonight We Drink takes that EP (in its entirety) and adds a dose of At the Drive-In sensibility, Foo Fighters addiction, and slick, arena-rock production. The local fourpiece electrifies a sound that switches on the fog machine, releasing the bass-heavy drive of opener "XX." Without a hi-hat in earshot and relying heavily on song structure, newbies "Seventensplit," "Colettalicious," and "The Ghost of Duane" are timeless, borrowing tricks from early-Nineties stalwarts (not unlike Magnet School's cover of Swervedriver's "Never Lose That Feeling") and adding their own verve. It might be a little too clean, a little too glossy for a Red River powerhouse, but if that's the biggest issue Magnet School faces, then funding won't be a problem at all.

Tigercity was formed in Northampton, MA in the fall of 2004. By summer 2005, Tigercity had themselves a DIY, bedroom electronics-style demo and started working with long time friend/engineer-producer Al Carlson (Brazilian Girls). In two months, Tigercity and Al Carlson molded the process-heavy demo tracks into what became the Tigercity EP (Forge Records). Of course, Thurston’s been releasing records here, there and everywhere mostly in the context of rowdy and rambunctious noise/improv escapades but this new one is killer diller SONGS! A record which vividly conjures the life of an insightful outsider, set to the dark, loping rhythms of Massive Attack or Portishead. A record built around a voice that's as sweetly expressive as it is richly soulful. Then imagine that every single sound of it, including the bass & the drums, is performed by one man on his amazingly versatile guitar. That record is Charmed & Strange.

ALBUM: Ephemera Blues
FILE UNDER: Psychedelic / Electronica / Other
LABEL: Helmet Room Recordings
INFO: Golden Death Music does more than glint, his music truly shines like the sun! I’m more than impressed, his latest homemade album Ephemera Blues is by far the best guitar-orientated music that I have heard since Elliot Smith’s Either/Or (RIP), although it sounds nothing like him really, so ignore all that. Instead I’ll take the radical step of saying what Ephemera Blues does sound like. In short, it sounds much like the artist’s name itself: it is golden death music. It is like death, but not horror show death or anything ghastly like death metal death, but something more ancient, more spiritual, more intangible - not something to be afraid of, but something to embrace, something blissful: an opium dream - something golden.
ARTIST / BAND: Kate Tucker & The Sons of Sweden
SONG (MP3): Faster Than Cars
ALBUM: Kate Tucker & The Sons of Sweden
FILE UNDER: Indie / Pop / Rock
LABEL: Red Valise
INFO: She sounds like a cross between Beth Orton and Neko Case. Thanks to a move from Ohio to Seattle, now everybody is starting to take notice.
Kate Tucker and the Sons of Sweden's debut record is starting to gain a lot of momentum, thanks to the slow motion soundtrack that is the track "Faster Than Cars," a song that gently delivers a soft riff on the electric guitar. Soon, a slow/mid tempo feel sucks you in as the band shuffles through a seductive beat.
The new record was recorded in a barn with Ryan Hadlock who has produced Blonde Redhead, The Gossip and The Octopus Project.
Fellow Seattle native Damien Jurado also shows up for background vocals on the track, "In the End."

SONG (MP3): Imaginary Girl
ALBUM: High Society
FILE UNDER: Pop / Indie / Alternative
LABEL: Cheap Lullaby Records
INFO: Daniel Tashian, lead singer and chief songwriter of Nashville-based quartet The Silver Seas, claims that the inspiration for the bittersweet pop songs on the group’s Cheap Lullaby debut didn’t come from a romantic breakup, some unrequited love or any of the typical catalysts for tunes like these, which teeter thrillingly between hopefulness and heartbreak. Tashian says it was sitcoms.
ARTIST / BAND: Maritime
SONG (MP3): Be Unhappy
ALBUM: Heresy and the Hotel Choir
FILE UNDER: Indie / Pop / Rock
Label: Flameshovel / Grand Hotel van Cleef / Bad News
INFO: There’s this song by Ned’s Atomic Dustbin (remember them?) whose title I always liked: “The Old New Un.” I always figured that it meant they’d taken an old idea and made something fresh from it; then again, maybe it’s about fish and chips. Anyway, I heard that song not long ago, and it made me think about Maritime. Dan Didier, who plays the drums, said something to me—and he said it sincerely, not giving me some marketing spiel—about how Heresy and the Hotel Choir, his band’s third album, really feels like their first. Why is that, you ask? There’s a reason, and it doesn’t discount the contemplative, mellow chewiness of 2004’s Glass Floor or the comparatively brash rockingess of 2006’s We, The Vehicles. It’s just to say that those records (and subsequent tours) were inspired by the energy of flux, and this one is about solidity. Glass Floor took tentative steps away from Didier and singer-guitarist Davey von Bohlen’s old band, the damn-near-legendary Promise Ring (remember them?), adding former Dismemberment Plan bassist Eric Axelson to the mix. Slow chaos followed: Somewhere in there, Axelson left; other people came and went, all amicably.

ALBUM: A Kind of Goodnight

ALBUM: Lust Lust Lust
FILE UNDER: Indie Rock
LABEL: Fierce Panda
INFO: The Raveonettes are a Danish Rock & Roll duo consisting of Sune Rose Wagner (on guitar, instruments, vocals) and Sharin Foo (on bass and vocals).

SONG (MP3): Ex-Guru
ALBUM: Widow City
FILE UNDER: Rock
LABEL: Thrill Jockey
INFO: The Fiery Furnaces are a U.S. indie rock band formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 2000.[1] The band's primary members are Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger. The brother and sister are originally from Oak Park, Illinois, a near-western suburb of Chicago. The band signed with the Rough Trade music label in 2002, and recorded their debut album, Gallowsbird's Bark, the same year. Released in the autumn of 2003, that album garnered critical praise for its clever wordplay and original songwriting[citation needed] and was often compared in the press to The White Stripes[citation needed] due to the garage blues elements of the band’s sound and the fact that the band are siblings, though, in the case of The White Stripes this was a misconception perpetrated and encouraged by the band itself.
ARTIST / BAND: The Forms
SONG (MP3): Knowledge in hand
ALBUM: The Forms
FILE UNDER: Indie / Experimental / Rock
LABEL: Threespheres
INFO:"Making this album was a pretty painful process," admits Forms frontman Alex Tween when asked about the band's follow-up to 2004's incredibly well-received, Pitchfork-approved debut Icarus—and, to be honest, his comment is a bit of an understatement. Recorded consecutively over a 50-day period in Illinois with Steve Albini (Nirvana, the Pixies) at Electrical Audio and assisted by Greg Norman (Built To Spill, Pelican) at Great Western Record Recorders, the process tested the New York act's limits of the band's sonics and sanity in ways that most of us couldn't even begin to imagine. "We couldn't afford to take one day off because we'd already paid for the studio time; all for 30 minutes of music, which works out to 35 seconds a day," frontman Alex Tween explains, "but we're really proud of how it came out."

INFO:In the age of computerized music-listening, calling an album "too long"-- a dubious complaint even two decades ago, when CDs first made track-skipping simpler-- seems absurdly outdated. After all, it's easy enough to make an iTunes playlist of a record's best songs, right? So I don't get it when people call Devendra Banhart's albums too long. Not only is that problem easy to rectify, but his rambling style needs room to breathe, and space to wander toward its inspirations. Banhart's valleys have rarely diminished his peaks, and often provided ramps to them.
