My Morning Jacket

ARTIST / BAND: My Morning Jacket

MP3: Holdin On To Black Metal

ALBUM: Circuital

FILE UNDER: Psychedelic rock

LABEL: ATO Records

INFO: “The new record, Circuital, is named after the title song,” explains Jim James, of My Morning Jacket’s sixth studio album. “On that song I sing about ending up in the same place where you started out. And that makes a lot of sense for this album… I hate the phrase ‘going back to our roots’, but for this record we came home and made it in Kentucky. And it just felt a lot like it did when we were first starting out…”

Silver Swans

ARTIST / BAND: Silver Swans
MP3: Mother of Pearl
ALBUM: Forever
FILE UNDER: Indie Pop
INFO: The Silver Swans are three fictional characters in the Wonder Woman stories. Each Silver Swan has the ability to create powerful sound waves with her voice. Her "swan song" is capable of devastating a small area of land with its destructive force. By creating a low-level humming, the Silver Swan can form a protective shield around herself that can deflect bullets and projectiles. They also have the telepathic ability to control birds and re-arrange matter with the sound they generate.

SONG (MP3): Am I still too late /  Everything Must Spin
ALBUM: Who's Breathing?
FILE UNDER: Folk / Lounge / Psychedelic
LABEL: Fire Records

He’s worked with Sandro Perri , Eric Chenaux and Jennifer Castle and he has his own mutant jazz standards group, The Ryan Driver Quartet. He plays guitar and sings, but while he’s recognised as an accomplished improviser he has also just made the greatest soul record of the decade read more from the source...

Baby Baby

ARTIST / BAND: Baby Baby
SONG (MP3):  "Kidz" / "Breakin"
ALBUM: Money
FILE UNDER: fun rock
LABEL:The Gospel of Rhythm
INFO:"At first glance, the motley crew of Fontez Brooks (Vocals, Guitar), Kyle Dobbs (Bass), and Grant Wallace (Drums), along with newcomer Colin Boddy (Percussion) do not seem like serious musicians. It might be the fact that they are constantly shirtless, wearing only fluorescent colored short-shorts. Maybe it's the tribal face paint that they sport at shows. Or it could be that they named their last album something as nonsensical as Wabadabadaba. Whatever the case may be, one thing is for certain, Baby Baby is very serious - about having fun.  read more from the source...

Las Kellies

ARTIST / BAND: Las Kellies
SONG (MP3): "Perro Rompebolas"
ALBUM: Kellies
FILE UNDER: punk, indie
LABEL: Fire Records
INFO:There’s only thing you can bank on when you’re confronted with Las Kellies: to expect the unexpected. From the raw rock & roll of their 2007 debut Shaking Dog – described by the great Everett True as “entirely ace” – to the Devo and ESG influenced sound of 2009’s follow-up Kalimera, this Argentinian three-piece have carved out a reputation for ripping up the form-book, delving into their box of magic tricks and serving up something entirely different. And so it is again on their third album Kellies: whether it’s embracing what they term as their “new sound” of groove-laden and irresistibly catchy post-punk or recruiting reggae legend Dennis Bovell to help in the studio, it’s the sound of a band who always keep things fresh.  Kellies will be released in the United States on July 5th. read more from the source...

Fan Modine

ARTIST / BAND: Fan Modine

MP3: "Through The Valley"  / "Julu Road"

ALBUM: Gratitude for the Shipper

FILE UNDER: indie pop

LABEL: Daniel 13 Press

INFO: Since the release of Slow Road to Tiny Empire, Fan Modine’s first album, in 1998, Gordon Zacharias has been known as an artist who mixes buoyant orchestral pop music with oftentimes more gloomy lyrics. This disconcerting combination has won him a cult following among fans of obscure rock bands, and of indie-pop artists in particular. With Gratitude for the Shipper, Fan Modine’s first album in six years, his music adds dimensions both lyrically and sonically, drawing inspiration from sources as diverse as French symbolist poet Stephane Mallarmé and Southern pop trailblazer Alex Chilton. “Waiting for Distant Light,” the album’s finale, is a tribute to the recently-deceased songwriter, singer and guitarist.

FILE UNDER: Post punk

Seapony

SEAPONY-GO-WITH-ME-575x575

ARTIST / BAND: Seapony

MP3: Blue Star / Dreaming

ALBUM: Go With Me

FILE UNDER: dream pop, indie

LABEL: Hardly Art

INFO:

The music of Seapony is refreshing in its simplicity. Most songs on Go With Meuse no more than three chords, with an average running time around two-and-a-half minutes. In lieu of a human drummer, the Seattle trio entrusts time-keeping to a vintage gizmo the size of a desktop calculator. The lyrics to "Dreaming," the track that catapulted them into the spotlight, are just six lines long. Like Young Marble Giants and Beat Happening before them, this young three-piece has generated excitement that belies their music's modest means. And their back story is just as no-nonsense

Art Brut

Art Brut

Art Brut - Lost Weekend by One Thirty BPM

Info:

Brilliant! Tragic! is the fourth studio album by Art Brut, to be released on May 23, 2011. The first single from the album will be "Lost Weekend". The album was recorded in Salem, Oregon and is the second to be produced by Frank Black, best known as the frontman of Pixies.

The tracklisting and release details were confirmed in early March 2011.[1]

Art Brut frontman Eddie Argos has already described "Brilliant! Tragic!" as his "favourite" Art Brut album, saying that it was definitely their "greatest" album so far. [2] "Bang Bang Rock & Roll did what it said on the tin", Argos explained, "It's A Bit Complicated was a bit complicated. On Art Brut vs. Satan we had to fight Satan. This one follows the same pattern, it is a 'brilliant, tragic', record. If it was a TV show you'd define it as a dramedy." [3]

Finn - I Just Called To Say I Love You / CRYING IN THE RAIN

ARTIST / BAND: Finn
SONG (MP3): I Just Called To Say I Love You
ALBUM: I Wish I Was Someone Else
FILE UNDER: Folk, singer songwriter, Indie
LABEL: sunday service
INFO:Hamburg-based singer-songwriter Patrick Zimmer, better known as finn., has entertained us for the last ten years mostly with his own songs – fragile and sensitive pieces of music, which the listener has no trouble feeling close to. With his new record, finn. enters new territories by covering 13 songs, which – despite all novelty – seems very coherent a move: just like bedtime stories addressed to no-one but ourselves, the songs bring up memories long lost. finn. sings to us while we curl up in the duvet of collective memory.  read more from the source...

Grimes

Grimes: "Vanessa"

ARTIST / BAND: Grimes

MP3: Vanessa

ALBUM: Darkbloom EP

FILE UNDER: Avant Pop

LABEL: Arbutus Records/Hippos in Tanks

INFO:

Grimes is weird pop influenced by styles such as R&B, Industrial, goth, hip hop and Western medieval organum. She is noted for simple but strong percussion, vocal virtuosity, and addictive melodies. Despite having little acquaintance with music before the age of 18, Grimes (born 1988) has overcome this barrier and used it to her advantage, exploding onto the music scene with a sound that is that is far different from that of her peers, and extremely broad in it’s references (Mariah Carey, Salem, Cocteau Twins, Gang Gang Dance, The Smiths, Prince). And yet, while all Grimes songs are different and genre-bending, there is a strong sound that is fully her own, characterized primarily by her chameleonlike voice.
She cannot read music and has no understanding of theory or notation, so her attempts to imitate often fail. Rather, the result is particularly unique, strangely beautiful, sometimes scary, frequently melancholic and catchy as hell.

Thao & Mirah

The indie-folk duo of Thao Nguyen and Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn complement each other perfectly while delving into new territory on their self-titled album together.

ARTIST / BAND: Thao & Mirah

Download: “Eleven” from Thao & Mirah via Pitchfork

Download: “How Dare You” via Kill Rock Stars

Listen: NPR First Listen Exclusive Album Stream

FILE UNDER: Indie

LABEL: Kill Rock Stars

INFO: With most collaborations come a push and pull between what each artist brings to the table. The most successful musical partnerships use those differences, and occasionally opposition, to force each musician out of a comfort zone and create something new that neither would have come up with by his or herself. That's certainly the case with Thao & Mirah, a new record from Thao Nguyen and Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn that finds a lot of common ground between the indie-folk singer-songwriters, while also delving into new territory for both.

Henry Clay People

Broken Ross, Andy, Les Josh, and JoeyPhoto Charlie Chu

ARTIST / BAND: Henry Clay People

MP3: California Wildfire

ALBUM: This Is A Desert EP

FILE UNDER: Classic Rock / Indie / Rock

LABEL: TBD Records

INFO:

Fresh off the full length release of “Somewhere On The Golden Coast” and months of touring with The Drive By Truckers, Against Me, and The Silversun Pickups, The Henry Clay People wasted no time diving back into the recording studio and surfacing with “This Is A Desert”, a five track EP to be released in May on TBD.  “This Is A Desert” is a collection of the familiar and a daring exploration of the new.
On the opening track “The Honey Love He Sells” The HC Peeps show off their punky side, like an early Replacementsesque kick in the teeth. On the other end of the spectrum the track "The Winter Song” displays a fresh, dense, and relatively bizarre production of what would otherwise be a straight ahead slacker ballad, kicking off with a doozy of an opening line:
"If you're feeling lost then maybe we'll get found...we'll kill some time watching cars drive by...we'll make some messes just to clean up...drink our faces numb or maybe fall in love for the first time since the last time..."
Zeroed in on this earnest spunk, we find The Henry Clay People writing their most mature music yet.  “This Is A Desert” acts as both an addition to The Henry Clay People’s already impressive discography and acts a an audible evolution of their approach to indie rock and roll.

Mount Moriah

ARTIST / BAND: Mount Moriah
MP3: "Lament"
ALBUM: Mount Moriah
FILE UNDER: Americana / Classic Rock / Folk
LABEL: Holidays for Quince Records
INFO: Heather McEntire (of post-punk veterans Bellafea) and Jenks Miller (of heavy-psych/metal outfit Horseback) met in 2005, while working at a record store in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  After collaborating as Un Deux Trois on the stripped-down, pop-inflected Lovers EP (2007), they established Mount Moriah as an outlet for their mutual interest in classic American folk and rock music.  Mount Moriah’s 2010 EP, The Letting Go, highlighted the band’s thematic range, moving from delicate acoustic narratives to a dark, fuzzed-out, soulful stomper in just three tracks.  Mount Moriah’s long-awaited, self-titled debut -- featuring guest instrumentation by members of St. Vincent, Megafaun, and many other North Carolina-based musicians -- is cut from the same cloth, offering a far-reaching and non-traditional take on classic folk themes like devotion, tribulation, redemption, and an indelible sense of place.

ALBUM: The Postcard EP

FILE UNDER: Powerpop / Rock / Zouk

LABEL: Punk Rock Payroll

INFO:

The Extraordinaires were formed in 2004 by beard enthusiasts Jay Purdy and Matt Gibson. Joined last year by Smoker, Zach, and Koof, they spend their time perfecting the art of space travel.

Music is the only thing keeping the members of The Extraordinaires alive. Going on tour not only allows them to try new fast foods, it is a good cover for their ongoing search for the Holy Grail. "Writing a song is easy", says Jay Purdy, "I usually take care of it in the bathroom."

Between their naturally high IQ's and there onstage antics, the Extraordinaires always pack a punch! available for bar mitzvahs!

Aside from theater, film, and visual art they play music. "We would describe our music by saying "swoosh", or with a picture of Shaq slamming a dunk." says Matt.

Nat Baldwin's

ARTIST / BAND: Nat Baldwin

MP3: "Weights"

ALBUM: People Changes

FILE UNDER: Free jazz /Experimental / Minimalist

LABEL: Western Vinyl

INFO:

Double bassist/singer-songwriter Nat Baldwin’s forthcoming album People Changes, out May 24 on Western Vinyl, is much like the stark Maine setting which it was created. Of course, his fourth full-length shows welcome markings of his experimental bent from years as the Dirty Projectors bassist and former disciple of free jazz legend Anthony Braxton, but the serene isolation of 17 million acres of New England forestland make this cabin-born set intimate and sincere. The album follows A Split EP with Extra Life (2008, Shatter Your Leaves) on which earlier versions of “Weights” and “Lifted” appear,Most Valuable Player (2008), Enter the Winter (2006) and Lights Out EP (2005) on Broken Sparrow Records, and his experimental free jazz debut Solo Contrabass (2003, Peacock Recordings). In addition to Dirty Projectors, Nat Baldwin has performed on Vampire Weekend’s Contra andDepartment of Eagles' In Ear Park. He will tour behind the album’s release this spring.

Head over to Brooklyn Vegan to check out the video for “Weights” from People Changes.
