Peter Wolf Crier

interbecover_7
ARTIST / BAND: Peter Wolf Crier
MP3: "Crutch & Cane"
ALBUM: Inter Be
FILE UNDER: Indie Pop
LABEL: jagjaguwar
INFO: Inter-Be is the debut album by PETER WOLF CRIER, the Minneapolis-based duo of Peter Pisano and Brian Moen. The album was born on a single summer night when Pisano felt a torrent of creativity after what had felt, to him, like an interminably long dry spell. He shared the songs with Moen, and over the months that followed, at Moen's home, these rough-hewed tunes became what they are now: a confident collection of songs, but deceptive in that their very guts still reflect the thoughts of a man in transition.

A Weather

ARTIST / BAND: A Weather
MP3: Giant Stairs
ALBUM: Everyday Baloons
FILE UNDER: indie-folk
LABEL: Bad Panda Records
INFO:
From Portland, Oregon A Weather are here for your listening pleasure. The indie-folk unit will release tomorrow, March 2, their forthcoming sophomore album Everyday Balloons,on Team Love Records (the label founded by Conor Oberst/Bright Eyes).
heir new album was once again recorded by engineer Adam Selzer (M. Ward, The Decemberists, Norfolk & Western) at Portland’s Type Foundry Studios, Everyday Balloons is propelled by the restrained yet unmistakable power of A Weather’s songs.  This singular quality recalls critical recognition of Cove, of which NPR’s ‘Song of the Day’ observed, “In the band’s hands, a sigh is far more compelling than a scream”, while the album also garnered high praise from Pitchfork (“…A Weather are, quite literally, a quiet storm”) as well as Nylon, Spin.com, Popmatters, and The New York Daily News, among others.

Man/Miracle

ARTIST / BAND: Man/Miracle
MP3s: Above The Salon / Hot Sprawl
ALBUM: The Shape of Things
FILE UNDER: Rock
LABEL: Third Culture
INFO: It's tempting to call MAN/MIRACLE a band, but they're more than just guys with instruments: they're four guys with musical instruments. Speaking precisely, they're really more of a group of musicians who write and perform music together-- a "band," if you will. In this configuration, they create the sort of intricate, resplendent, wooly guitar pop to which many adjectives-- including totally inapplicable ones, like "wooly"-- might be applied.

MP3: "Love"
ALBUM: Little More Lived In
FILE UNDER: Indie / Psychedelic / Pop

INFO: Snowglobe is a rather amorphous, unwieldy group of artists who share a love for all things honest, poppy, and psychedelic. All members to date hail from Memphis, TN, but the music and idea of Snowglobe has its origins in Athens, GA. The group played many of it’s first shows with the artists of the elephant 6 collective, including Of Montreal and Olivia Tremor Control. They have since returned home, and today Snowglobe strives to continue the age old Memphis tradition of playing honest music for the right reasons.

Tracey Thorn

ARTIST / BAND: Tracey Thorn

MP3: "Oh, the Divorces!"

ALBUM: Love and Its Opposite

FILE UNDER: Pop / Folk / Electronica

LABEL: Merge / Strange Feeling

INFO: After pausing an 18-year career with partner Ben Watt in best-selling alt-pop duo Everything But The Girl (1982–2000), followed by a self-imposed hiatus to start a family, Tracey Thorn re-emerged in 2007 to a wave of critical acclaim with the glittering autobiographical folk-disco of Out of the Woods, her first solo album since 1982’s indie classic A Distant Shore. Now she is back with another: the starkly beautiful Love and Its Opposite on Merge Records.
Partnering again with Berlin-based producer Ewan Pearson (who worked on much of Out of the Woods and more recently with Delphic), Tracey has created an album that is striking in its simplicity. Recorded in Berlin and London, and featuring guest contributions from Hot Chip’s Al Doyle, The Invisible’s Leo Taylor, Swedish singer-songwriter Jens Lekman, Nashville songwriter-drummer Cortney Tidwell and Lost Valentinos’ guitarist Jono Ma, Love and Its Opposite is steeped in a compassionate directness. The tight, often undecorated arrangements for guitar, piano, bass, and drums (and a smattering of strings and woodwinds) serve ten songs over a compact thirty-nine minutes that confront the full unvarnished weight of complex relationships in flux.

ARTIST / BAND: Nedry

MP3: A42

ALBUM: Condors

FILE UNDER: electro pop

LABEL: monotreme records

INFO: We are very proud to be releasing 'Condors', the debut album of London UK trio Nedry, whose dazzling fusion of electronica, instrumental rock, dub-step rhythms and hauntingly beautiful vocals has already generated quite a well-deserved buzz in the UK media.
Nedry is Matt Parker, Chris Amblin and Ayu Okakita. Nedry create music to bounce to, rock-out to and get lost in. Their beautiful sound and arresting beats are from and for the ‘post-’ generation. Their sound is dark and ambient but broken-up and lifted by moments of glitch and fuzzy, melodic guitars. Both live and on record they use innovative production techniques to create a truly original sound.

LEMONADE

ARTIST / BAND: LEMONADE

MP3: "Lifted"

ALBUM: Pure Moods EP

FILE UNDER: Indie/Pop/Garage/Electronica

LABEL: True Panther

INFO: This is Lemonade's follow-up to their praised and explosive debut album. This EP is an utterly unique take on electronic dance music, this time focused and melodic. It incorporates more explicit soca, dub, and calypso influences into Lemonade's existing ravey palate. Even if those sounds are channelled through 16-bit samples and city stories the record has a certain wetness to it- a rich vegetation of sounds. Tight electronic arrangements layered with Alex Pasternak's fiercely clattered drums, Ben Steidel's invitingly rubbery bass and Callan Clendenin's wobbly vocal harmonies float in and out of scope. The whistles of Bedstuy's West Indian Day Parade ring out in "Banana Republic", Ballearic synths carress "Remain In Jah". The EP's leading track "Lifted" somehow submerges its anthemic chorus and raindrop synths under a deafening waterfall. It feels good. If their debut was citric slime, this EP is an orange; firm and almost uniform in its peel, sweet and wet inside.

Caribou

ARTIST / BAND: Caribou

MP3: Odessa

ALBUM: Swim

FILE UNDER: New Psychodelia

LABEL: Merge/City Slang

INFO: If Dan Snaith has mastered one aspect of is music career, it's change. Not the remodeling or renovation, sort, more the alterations and adaptations with purpose (not even including the weird story of the Dictators' Dick Manitoba forcing Snaith to give up his pseudonym in 2004). The steady upward progression in replayability between 2001's glitchy Start Breaking My Heart and 2005's towering Milk of Human Kindness feels like a problem of some sort was solved. Which makes room for the comparative left-turn of Andorra, which both felt like a huge surprise (songs!) and a logical extension (songs with insane drumming!) of what he'd always been doing.

The Dustbowl Revival

ARTIST / BAND: The Dustbowl Revival

MP3: "Falling Down"

ALBUM: You Can't Go Back To The Garden Of Eden

FILE UNDER: Post punk / Blues / Folk

INFO: The Dustbowl Revival is a Venice, CA-based folk orchestra that merges old school gypsy rhythms with bluegrass, gospel, jug-band, jump blues and the hot swing of the 1930’s to form a spicy roots cocktail. Known for their raucous dance-inducing live sets, the Dustbowl Revival plays what some call hillbilly jazz—the original front porch rock n’ roll. Think Dylan and The Band in Newport meets Louis Armstrong in New Orleans meets Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeroes on the beaches of LA. It’s young people playing upbeat, vintage music and it’s all written and composed by howlin’ and stompin’ 24 year old frontman Zach Lupetin who first envisioned putting together a kind of roots supergroup when he moved from Chicago (his father is a blues harp virtuoso who sometimes sits in), to Michigan and then to sunny Los Angeles three years ago. The goal? Why, to make people feel good, of course.

Slow Six

ARTIST / BAND: Slow Six
MP3: The Night You Left New York
ALBUM: Tomorrow Becomes You
FILE UNDER: Rock / Experimental / Electroacoustic
LABEL: Western Vinyl
INFO:
Western Vinyl (current or former home of Balmorhea, Dirty Projectors, Here We Go Magic, Ola Podrida, J. Tillman, and more) announces its first release of 2010. The Austin-based independent label will release Tomorrow Becomes You, the new album by Slow Six, on January 26th, 2010.
At the turn of the millennium in downtown New York, in an era of Moby and the Strokes, Slow Six was pulling up in front of clubs, loading in music stands, video projectors, a battery of string players, and a desktop computer programmed with custom software. Reading down its twenty-minute electro-acoustic scores to stunned audiences, Slow Six helped redefine what was possible when those who grew up with both classical and rock music re-imagined their surrounding musical landscape in their own image.

FILE UNDER: Northern soul / Pop

LABEL:  Unique Records

INFO: Drawn together from both sides of the North Sea, Laura Vane & The Vipertones are a new (although most likely already familiar) group consisting of musicians from various Dutch & UK projects, pooling their respective skills together for this remarkably traditional funk & soul mission. From Holland (Dordrecht near Rotterdam) Phil Martin & Ton van der Kolk (AIFF, Soul Snatchers, Jazzinvaders, Unique Records) provide instrumental elegance and have obvious talent for developing the grooves and beats fired over the internet from the relentless Jonathan Radford (Diesler/Burnley near Manchester, UK). Finally the music, in its rawest form, resides temporarily with Laura Vane (Miss honey-over-sandpaper tones/Brighton, UK) who locks herself away from the modern world to work on the sweet vocals and inspired lyrics.
