Based on the northern coast of Scotland, the group got its start on acclaimed experimental electronica label Skam in 1996 after recording an obscene number of tracks and pressing the best of them up as a miniscule-run 12", Twoism, an eight-track promo EP the group sent to labels in lieu of a demonstration tape. The result combines warm, organic dub soudscapes with classical stylings, elements of folk with fuzzed guitars, manipulation of language with electronic experimentation. This anything goes approach fits with the original concept behind the group.

INFO: After Gerald Mandl and Florian Zwietnig got together as partners in crime under the moniker of Mediengruppe Telekommander in early 2002, Hamburgs indie label Enduro soon pricked up their ears, bringing out a debut EP featuring five tracks in December 2002. The release caused a stir in well-informed underground circles and beyond. Things began to happen fast and furiously: initial live gigs, initial tour, initial press reactions, succeeded by the second EP in September 2003, out on Enduro again. More concerts followed, plus various features in MP3 magazines, more MP3 downloads, a no-budget video to promote Telekommanda, on heavy rotation on Fast Forward on the German music channel, VIVA ZWEI. Then came the move to Berlin. Even more MP3 downloads, interest from a number of labels, endless discussions and finally the decision to release their first album on Mute. Their debut album Die ganze Kraft einer Kultur (out on Mute (CD) and Enduro (vinyl)) was recorded in December 2003 at the Transporterraum studios by Moses Schneider and produced by Christian Harder in Hamburg. It arrived at the stores in May 2004. The interest in Mediengruppe Telekommander was overwhelming, the media were delighted and the clubs packed out during the subsequent mammoth tour. Parties, mosh pits and discourse these three suddenly seemed to go together really well!

INFO: When I started to write the songs for this record ‘Son,’ a new element that may have been hidden for a long time appeared; the randomness of the combination of sounds in nature. Each bird has a particular singing; nevertheless this singing is always different. It is not a pattern; it’s a drawing, a sound and a mode, only a few elements that each bird combines in a new way each time. In the same way, sometimes I chose to sing a melodic drawing I develop for the song. Verses are alike, but never the same (rios seco, no seas antipática) other times I chose to sing a repetitive melody. What changes here and moves randomly is, for example, a keyboard. It is like overlapping two different loops, with no synchronicity at all. One very rhythmic and the other one more lose. When you play both, at the same time, the loose loop will provoke a changing harmony, because their beats will never be in the same place. This causes a moving harmony. During the tours, I also applied my new ideas to the old songs, that's why, when I got back home, I recorded the first thing that came to mind using these new ideas. In October, when I sat down to put all I had for the record together I had the huge and pleasant surprise that I almost had the record done. ‘Son’ is a step forward on the same path I started with Segundo and followed with Tres Cosas.

The three of them also play in The Stares. Bill Patton also plays guitar and pedal steel in Weary, The Wet City Rockers, James Whiton and the Downtown Apostles, Smile Project, Electric Chinese Orchestra, J.Tillman, and sometimes with Julia Francis, The Mean Streaks, and Winston Jarrett.
