MICAH P. HINSON

ARTIST / BAND: MICAH P. HINSON
SONG (MP3): THE LEADING GUY
ALBUM: The Baby and the Satellite
FILE UNDER: Indie / Acoustic / Experimental
LABEL: jade tree
INFO: Debut album from Texan singer-songwriter, produced by The Earlies released September 2004
Born in the southern US town of Memphis, Tennessee, on the day that President Ronald Reagan was shot in an assassination attempt, Micah (pronounced my-kah) Paul Hinson was raised in a Christian fundamentalist household. As a teenager, Hinson and his family moved to Abilene, Texas, where he became a member of the local music scene. It is here, where Micah first met his then muse – a Vogue cover model and widow of a notable local rock star. Introduced to her, and in turn Valium and other narcotics, it was not long before Micah’s muse turned into the ‘Black Widow’ as he now refers to her, and he hit a horrible twist of events. In the Spring of 2000, he was caught forging prescriptions and was sent to county jail – “I ended up losing my car, my home, all my money, my instruments and recording equipment, and basically my entire family”.

PONY UP!

ARTIST / BAND: PONY UP!
SONG (MP3): THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND DOGS (IS THAT THEY DIE)
ALBUM: make lve to the judges
FILE UNDER: Indie / Emo / Pop
LABEL: dimmak
INFO: Feeling they had abounding musical talents to unleash on the world, Pony Up formed at the behest of bassist Lisa J Smith and her new-found friend, guitarist Sarah Moundroukas. To complete the band, Lisa recruited two of her oldest friends in the world: drummer Lindsay Wills - with whom she had collaborated musically before - and Lindsay's kid sister, Laura Elizabeth. Lisa saw great potential in Laura, mostly because of her musically inclined parents, and her desperate need for attention. Laura was convinced to join the band (and learn the keyboard) by the promise of a secret band-handshake. And so Pony Up was formed, on New Years Eve 2002. Through the course of the 3 years it took to write, record and release their self -titled EP, the girls toured North America extensively, honing their stage show and polishing their chops.

THE BATS

ARTIST / BAND: THE BATS
SONG (MP3): BELLS
ALBUM: At The National Grid
FILE UNDER: Rock
LABEL: MAGIC MARKER RECORDS
INFO: this is THE BATS the jangly rock band from new zealand. part of the new zealand bands that were tagged with the kiwi-rock sound amongst other contemporaries the clean and the chills. the bats have gone on to influence many a band. they even have a greatest hits album! robert scott, malcolm grant, paul kean, kaye woodward 1 line-up; 23 years; 6 albums; 4 world tours and a new album “the bats at the national grid” on it’s way. from the band that brought you the legendary albums “daddy’s highway” and “silverbeet” and after ten years something sparks up when the bats get together to play. from a mantric like pick and strum of a chord from robert, add bouncing bass with twist from paul, a melodic hook from kaye on guitar and malcolm on a beat that just makes you want to move and dance. the combination of musical ingredients works perfectly - effortlessly. It’s been like that for 23 years now and the magic doesn’t seem to be fading. that is the essence -apply that magic to robert’s endless creative outpouring of songs and a recent late blooming from the pen of kaye woodward and you get a fine new albums worth of tunes from the bats circa 2005.

WES MCDONALD

ARTIST / BAND: WES MCDONALD
SONG (MP3): CHINESE RUG
ALBUM: 1:50 In The Furnace
FILE UNDER: Rock
LABEL: skybucket
INFO: Formerly of southern rockers The Ohms, McDonalds gritty voice and driving energy turn up the heat and make you want to sweat it out. Ken Coomers production prevails with Lee Ranaldo-esque riffs and lush Sam Prekop-ish melodies of more uh than ahhh. A true indie record that goes bang and is as cerebrally beautiful as it is skillfully pivotal. - RJL - Real Detroit Weekly By Neil McDonald April 05, 2006 From Birmingham, AL by way of Athens, GA, singer-songwriter Wes McDonald seems to owe more to the latter than the former, as his roots rock sounds are often polished with a jangle pop sheen more in keeping with the 80s indie Mecca than anything found down in the Delta. Produced by Wilcos Ken Coomer, 1:50 in the Furnace is McDonalds fourth album and one that ably traverses the lines between power pop, country and rock. Shot Stereo and Chinese Rug are ragged rockers from the Paul Westerberg mould, though with more outward polish and with choruses sunnier than they are scruffy. Likewise, the excellent Whats Comin Over Me and the title track toy with ramshackle untidiness, but McDonalds inherent pop smarts ensure neither song goes off the rails;

They followed up their first album with singles on labels from Japan, England, Germany, and the U.S. They then cemented their cult status by endless touring all over the United States, playing everywhere from house shows to universities, nightclubs to supermarket grand openings.

THE FUTUREHEADS

SONG (MP3): SKIP TO THE END
ALBUM: News And Tributes
FILE UNDER: Alternative / Indie / Rock
LABEL: 679 Recordings
INFO: The Futureheads formed in 2000, in Sunderland. More specifically, in Barrys garage really. The line-up of the band at that point consisted of Jaff (Bass, Vocals), Barry Hyde (Guitar, Vocals), Ross Millard (Guitar, Vocals), and Peter Brewis, now of cerebral pop-masterpiece-makers, Field Music (Drums, Vocals). After playing a million and one hometown shows, and hopefully aggravating some of the vilest cleg-on bands Britpop could have to offer (on a local level only, obviously, because apparently therell always be a place for a Bluetones DJ set somewhere), the Futuremen took the show on the road. A massive helping hand from Slampt Records Milky Wimpshake sent them on a tour of squats and Youth Centres in Central Europe in summer 2001. Unfortuntaly this also necessitated a change in drummers Peter Brewis had ongoing commitments to other projects. In his place ambled a young pretender. Mr David Hyde (Drums, Vocals).

THE COUP

ARTIST / BAND: THE COUP
SONG (MP3): WE ARE THE ONES
ALBUM: Pick A Bigger Weapon
FILE UNDER: Hip Hop / Funk / Soul
LABEL: anti
INFO: The Coup's new album, "Pick a Bigger Weapon", kicks off with a classic Boots Riley line—"I'm a walking contradiction/Like bullets and love mixin'…"—and then it just gets better. After a 14-year career that has defined the word "uncompromising", the Coup return, armed with bigger funk and taller tales. Backed by a stellar band that includes Audioslave's Tom Morello, Dwayne Wiggins, and veterans of Parliament-Funkadelic, the Gap Band, Toni! Tony! Toné!, Jesse Johnson, and Frankie Beverly and Maze, the sound is a little edgier on this record and the beats a little faster." The Coup's uniquely bent grooves point to "Dirty Mind"-era Prince, late-80s Too Short, and the trunk-rattling hyphy sonics of the New Bay movement. The song-cycle of "Pick a Bigger Weapon" highlights Boots' storytelling gifts—the same outrageous humor, underdog love, and righteous rage that produced classics like "Fat Cats/Bigga Fish" ("Genocide & Juice") and "Me & Jesus The Pimp In A '79 Granada Last Night" ("Steal This Album"). The songs capture the collisions between economics and everyday life, the political and the personal. The album begins with "We Are The Ones", the story of a street player who could be related to Slick Rick or the late Bay Area rap hero, Mac Dre. "Laugh/Love/Fuck" is a breezy manifesto.

THE OCTOPUS PROJECT

ARTIST / BAND: THE OCTOPUS PROJECT
SONG (MP3): MALARIA CODES
ALBUM: 'ONE TEN HUNDRED THOUSAND MILLION'
FILE UNDER: Experimental / Pop
LABEL: peekaboo records
INFO: Drums vs. drum machines. Samplers vs. guitars. Take these oppositional elements, add a willingness to start a band first and learn how to use the gear later, crank it up to 25,000 and under certain laboratory conditions another band like The Octopus Project might emerge. The Octopus Project has created a unique sound perhaps best described as "ambidextrous equipment failure junk-tronica," merging the experimentation of progressive post-rock, the blips and bleeps of electronica and the raw, human ROCK of rock.

THE STREETS

ARTIST / BAND: THE STREETS
SONG (MP3): WHEN YOU WASN'T FAMOUS
ALBUM: Hardest Way to Make An Easy Living
FILE UNDER: Rap / Garage / Electronica
LABEL: VICE
INFO: It's been two years since the Streets' second album, A Grand Dont Come For Free, and a lot has happened to Mike Skinner. First off, he went from being the witty and brash young wonder of Original Pirate Material to being the bona fide voice, not just of a generation, but of a whole class. Secondly, he became famous. Yeah, he was known before, but over the past two years, he turned into one of those untouchable celebrities, with a track record to match. Gambling, break-downs, drugs, and girls: it's the stuff tabloids live for. Turns out, it's the stuff of great records too. read more from the source...

CORTNEY TIDWELL

ARTIST / BAND: CORTNEY TIDWELL
SONG (MP3): MAMA FROM THE MOUNTAIN
ALBUM: CORTNEY TIDWELL EP
FILE UNDER: Gothic / Country / Experimental
LABEL: ever records
INFO: Cortney' s unusual and uncompromising approach to her work has resulted in a sound that is quite unlike any other. This is a music of fascinating beauty: staggering, desolate, country infused laments sprinkled with subtle flourishes of electronics; skeletal, eerie, haunting structures that reach out far beyond their geographic roots. And the voice is even more remarkable, an arresting and vulnerable instrument that recalls the likes of Leslie Feist, Hope Sandoval and Liz Fraser whilst maintaining a character all its own.

OF MONTREAL

ARTIST / BAND: OF MONTREAL
SONG (MP3): IT'S EASY TO SLEEP WHEN YOU'RE DEAD
ALBUM: The Bedside Drama: a Petite TragedyThe Sunlandic Twins
FILE UNDER: Indie Pop
LABEL: polyvinyl records
INFO: The brainchild of singer/guitarist Kevin Barnes, Of Montreal was among the second wave of bands to emerge from the sprawling Elephant 6 collective. A native of Athens, Georgia, Barnes formed the group following a failed romance with a woman from Montreal. After several moves to various cities and states, Barnes again found himself living in Athens. Once back home, he began collaborating with bassist/vocalist Bryan Poole (Elf Power) and drummer/vocalist Derek Almstead (Circulatory System). Together they recorded the band's debut album, Cherry Peel, released by Bar/None in 1997 (and later re-issued in late 1999, remixed and with additions by the later five-piece version of the band).

BROOKVILLE

ARTIST / BAND: BROOKVILLE
SONG (MP3): NOTHING'S MEANT TO LAST
ALBUM: Life In The Shade
FILE UNDER: Alternative / Indie / Electronica
LABEL: unfilteredrecords.com
INFO: Andy Chase of BROOKVILLE is a New York-based musician and producer. He is best known as a member of the band IVY, and has co-produced and co-written all of the music on IVY's four critically acclaimed albums, as well as IVY's score for the Farrelly Brothers movie "Shallow Hal", and IVY's song I'll Be Near You for the recent film "Bee Season" (Richard Gere, Juliette Binoche). As a producer, he has enjoyed success with the French pop group Tahiti 80, whose debut album Puzzle was a critical and commercial hit around the world, particularly in Japan, where it went gold. This success in Asia led to numerous subsequent production and songwriting offers for Chase, including work with Japanese megastar Chara and several other artists, all of whom recorded songs that Chase had specifically written for them. Chase also co-owns Stratosphere Sound recording studio in NYC with former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha and IVY bandmate (also in Fountains Of Wayne) Adam Schlesinger. BROOKVILLE is a project that allows Chase to balance his talent for songcraft with his love for rich sonic landscapes and textures. It is in some senses a "solo concept," on which Chase is free to explore the type of languid, atmospheric music that is only hinted at within the tight pop framework of IVY's records. But the many contributing musicians that appear, including Eric Matthews, James Iha, The Brazilian Girls, Steve Osborne (New Order, Elbow, Doves), Jean-Pierre Ensuque (Autour de Lucie), Jody Porter (Fountains Of Wayne), Josh Lattanzi (Ben Kweller, The Lemonheads), and many others, suggest that BROOKVILLE is always a collaborative effort that leaves ample room for experimentation and exploration. Life In The Shade, BROOKVILLE's follow up to "Wonderfully Nothing", is set for release in June 2006.
