INFO: Benni Hemm Hemm released the E.P. SummerPlate in the summer of 2003. The E.P. was a solo release, produced by Benedikt H. Hermannsson. The E.P. got one review that was very nice, by Árni Matthíasson at Morgunblaðið. After the first and only SummerPlate concert at Gallerí Nema Hvað, Benni moved to Italy for a few months. There he wrote the bulk of the first full album under the name of Benni Hemm Hemm. The first performance of the big band of Benni Hemm Hemm, was on the 1st of May, 2004, at the 5th birthday of Kitchen Motors. And after that performance there was no turning back. In November the band started recording in Sundlaugin, the best studio in Iceland. There were seven songs recorded on 24 tracks on a very busy weekend.Then in May 2005 the band recorded five more tracks in Klink & Bank. Klink & Bank was a very big working space for Icelandic artists that was rented out for free.

INFO: Longtime New York multi-instrumentalist David Garland has a voice for radio. Probably a good thing, given that in addition to being a pleasantly conversational-sounding singer-songwriter, Garland is radio host of WNYC's "Spinning on Air" and "Evening Music". As Pitchfork's Matthew Solarski reports, this widely respected downtown dude gets a little help from some friends on his eighth album Noise in You, out July 24 on Family Vineyard. The ambling chamber-pop of "Every Bird" enlists the vocals of one Sufjan Stevens (who also appears on the National's impressive new Boxer), plus Mi and L'au's Mira Romantschuk and Missouri-born singer-songwriter Viking Moses. Held together by Garland's 12-string guitar, the song evokes the lush arrangements of Stevens or Andrew Bird-- there's oboe, people!-- for a charming contemplation of avian mysteries. "Waiting in the wings of every bird are memories that fill the hollow bone," the erudite Garland begins. If birds fly over the rainbow, then why can't radio waves?

Over the course of two weekends in the summer of 1999, they recorded a seven-song self-released record called Stars Too Small to Use, with recording engineer Jeff Hoskins.

INFO: The first five of those meant using a few weekends a year, and those odd Christian holidays, to hang out and record some tracks to the computer. That’s how I got involved. Henrik said that he was going to do some recording in the south of Sweden, together with Audrey and Fredrik. He asked if I wanted to visit and maybe lend my computer skills. Of course I couldn’t restrain myself from putting down some bass lines once I got those songs into my system. Back home I went back to my normal business, whatever that might have been at the time. Later, when Envelopes got their first show at Kulturhuset Lava in Stockholm, Sweden, I was called in. We also needed a drummer. Enter Filip, and a proper functioning pop band was created. Indeed. The show was quite well received, but was to be our last on Swedish turf for a long time. We played every Parisian venue, and Benicassim Festival in Spain, before coming back to the home country.

INFO: Elvis Perkins was raised in Los Angeles and New York and took to music at an early age, perhaps an inevitability if Elvis happens to be your name. He briefly learned the saxophone, before picking up the guitar in high school and taking lessons with Prescott Niles, one-time bassist for the Knack. While he played in rock bands, Perkins also developed an interest in the classical guitar, and began to compose music in both idioms. He wrote poetry too, which gradually morphed into lyrics. After a short stint at college, he began to cultivate the idiosyncratic, highly personalized style that distinguishes Ash Wednesday, a process which for Perkins was “a long journey, long in the coming”.

INFO: While there are plenty of "aww...how cute" moments in the back-story of Grand Rapids, Michigan’s The Icicles, it would be a mistake to see them as mere DIY indie-poppers. It's true; The Icicles did sell handmade hats and mittens at craft shows to pay for the recording of their debut EP. Joleen, initially too shy to play with Gretchen in the early days, thought she’d be of use to the fledgling group as a seamstress. But, The Icicles needed a keyboardist, and Gretchen liked how Joleen sweetly played "Blackbird" on the guitar when they first met as students at Grand Valley State University. So, with Joleen in place, the band was born. The group eventually found their way to the stage via the local pop shows brought to Grand Rapids by their future label boss, Drive In/Microindie's Mike Babb, and have stood out (in matching outfits) from day one. They are, at once, a perfect combination of surface and substance.

INFO: Architecture in Helsinki began with Cameron Bird in the late 1990s in Carlton, Victoria. Bird and fellow Architecture in Helsinki members Jamie Mildren and Sam Perry were members of a teenage funk-grunge band called The Pixel Mittens. After outgrowing the limitations of living in a small Australian country town the trio moved to Melbourne. The band played one or two small gigs before going into semi-hibernation. In 2000, while studying photography at art school, Bird met James Cecil. The two had an instant musical connection and within a couple of months Cecil joined the band on drums. Around that time Bird met Kellie Sutherland at a party and invited her to play the clarinet on some of the band's songs. The band began work on their debut album at Supermelodyworld, James' recording studio built in a church hall on Melbourne's Southeast side. Recording was halted though when Bird had to leave for an extended holiday in the US, leaving the album unfinished. On his return, Bird, inspired by his experiences in Portland, Oregon wrote three-quarters of the songs for the album in six days. The songs marked the new direction for the band - short, catchy pop songs. Once again at art school, Bird met Isobel Knowles, Tara Shackell and Gus Franklin who would complete the band's lineup. The three new members filled in the gaps on the album to complete it. After nearly two years of work, Architecture in Helsinki's debut album Fingers Crossed was released on 9 February 2003.

Band-members came and left, until Ola and Carina eventually decided to continue as a duo, and in 2001 their debut album 'June and Novas' was released, under the name Moonbabies.

The band's sound can be described as high-energy rock'n'roll, drawing heavily from mod, soul, garage, and British Invasion influences. Their name is taken from the first two singers of the 1970s German Krautrock band Can: Malcolm Mooney and Damo Suzuki.
The band was featured in the Madden 2005 soundtrack and in the ATV Offrod Fury 3 soundtrack, with their song "Alive and Amplified", as well as the Burnout 3 soundtrack, with "Shake that Bush Again." The band has also appeared on the popular BBC 1 programme Friday Night With Jonathon Ross. Ironic or not, the band is now the signature artist for the Suzuki brand (the automaker). An edited "Alive and Amplified" appears on all Suzuki commercials, pun intended.

The band was formed during the New York transit strike of 2005, when a chance meeting in a taxi carpool introduced a group of young musicians to one another. During the fateful ride through morning rush hour, they discovered their shared affinity for the music of Stax Records and artists such as ESG, Harry Nillson, Big Star, David Bowie, and Yanni. Within a month, the newfound friends were rehearsing and recording what would become "Maps and Legends" in Terence's Brooklyn studio. With roots firmly planted in strong songwriting and inventive production, Taxi Taxi defies easy classification. Both eclectic and experimental, Taxi Taxi serves up tunes that are by turns rocky and melancholic, unpredictable and nostalgic. Terence is a co-founder of White Mud Free Way whose 2004 debut "Last Year's Junk" was released by Bar/None Records. Certainly their heavy melodies incorporated traces of The Stooges, the Velvet Underground, Husker Du and Sonic Youth. INFO: The Clientele are a four piece who formed in Hampshire in 1997, with a sound combining the melody of 60s pop-psych heroes The Monkees, Love and The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band and the later, magical strangeness of Felt, Television and Galaxie 500. They immediately set about releasing 7-inch singles through different labels in the UK, Spain, Japan and USA, compiling these to produce the cinematic, soft-focus beauty of their debut album "Suburban Light", released in 2000. The NME was quick to say that "those who like their art-pop espresso laced with gentle Surrealism will swoon to the sounds of the Clientele". But who cares what the NME thinks? This release saw them sign a deal with Merge Records in the USA, where they quickly gained a cult following.
