This edition of Muzorama explores a Japan where tradition is not preserved behind glass, but continually rewired. Okinawan min’yō, sanshin, matsuri drums, dub, field recordings and imagined folk landscapes pass through modular synthesis, bass music, ambient, acid and experimental electronics.
From Takkak Takkak and AMAMIKYU’s borderless ritual music to ORIONBEATS’ techno reconstruction of festival drums, CITY1’s Okinawan bass mutations, MERMAID’s mutant dub and the dreamlike worlds of 7FO, Hiroshi Ebina and OORUTAICHI, the mix moves between inherited memory and invented futures.
Not traditional music, and not simply electronic music — but new music emerging from the conversation between place, memory and machines.
I think “place, memory and machines” is the strongest central idea for this particular selection.
