Kütu Folk Records
Kütu Folk Records is an indie record label based in Clermont-Ferrand (France) and created by a collective of artists. KFR works on allying aesthetic and musical ambitions since 2006. All the artists designed the artwork of their albums themselves, every KFR record is released with hand-sewn cardboard sleeves. Thus, the label emphasized the importance of the object in this time of dematerialization of the music. Those original sleeves are the identity of the label and the common feature between its artists coming from a huge diversity of universes.

INFO: Providence, RI's Brown Bird is better listened to in a room made of wood. Of course, it is easy to download the code and listen to the band on small computer speakers, but what is the point? You miss the warm layers of guitar, banjo, violin, double bass, cello, and bass drum (wooden rim) which hangs thick over their latest full-length effort, Salt for Salt, being released October 18th, 2011 on Supply & Demand Music (home to Dark Dark Dark, Vandaveer, etc). The album artwork (below) was illustrated by Will Schaff (Okkervil River, Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Songs:Ohia).

INFO: Since the release of Slow Road to Tiny Empire, Fan Modine’s first album, in 1998, Gordon Zacharias has been known as an artist who mixes buoyant orchestral pop music with oftentimes more gloomy lyrics. This disconcerting combination has won him a cult following among fans of obscure rock bands, and of indie-pop artists in particular. With Gratitude for the Shipper, Fan Modine’s first album in six years, his music adds dimensions both lyrically and sonically, drawing inspiration from sources as diverse as French symbolist poet Stephane Mallarmé and Southern pop trailblazer Alex Chilton. “Waiting for Distant Light,” the album’s finale, is a tribute to the recently-deceased songwriter, singer and guitarist.

INFO: Cosmic American four-piece Filthybird has had an busy year, migrating from Greensboro, North Carolina, to the Triangle, opening a guitar repair shop in downtown Graham (Fret Sounds), and putting the finishing touches on their brilliant new full-length record, Songs for Other People. The follow-up to the lauded Southern Skies, Filthybird’s latest record reveals an astounding depth, effectively marrying the lilting vocal melodies of Renee Mendoza (Ashrae Fax) to her husband Brian Haran’s (Glenn Branca Orchestra, LaMonte Young projects, Viridian) layered guitar atmospherics. Anchored by Michael Duehring and Otto Hauser’s (Vetiver, Bright Back Morning Light, Espers) powerfully inventive rhythm section, these songs are both soulful and dreamy, familiar and fresh. Lush, breezy and cinematic arrangements may recall the best moments of Gram Parsons, Jefferson Airplane, Roky Erikson and Chris Bell, but this band is unique, reassembling the most colorful fragments of a mythic American music into something entirely new.
