This edition of Muzorama explores pop music at the point where it begins to lose its fixed shape.
Across the mix, melody and voice remain central, but familiar song structures are constantly destabilised by fractured electronics, ambient space, psychedelic textures, spoken word, dub, experimental folk and unusual rhythmic forms. The result is music that still carries the intimacy and immediacy of pop, while refusing its conventional architecture.
The selection moves between the dreamlike electronics of Discovery Zone, the bodily and ritualistic work of Marcus Whale, the fragile experimental songwriting of N NAO and Frances Chang, and the more abrasive edges of EWAH and Eilis Frawley. The Anchoress brings shoegaze-inflected art-pop, while L’Rain, Tara Clerkin Trio and Julia Holter push the mix further toward abstraction, memory and open-ended composition. Draamakuu, Momus and STROOM’s outsider pop sensibility add another layer of eccentricity and unpredictability.
The title Unstable Pop is not meant as a genre definition, but as a description of a condition: songs that remain recognisably pop while their boundaries, textures and structures are constantly shifting.
