TRALALA

ARTIST / BAND: TRALALA
SONG (MP3): TAKE ME AS I AM
ALBUM: Is That The TraLaLa
FILE UNDER: Rock/Pop, Rock, Alternative
LABEL: Audika Records
INFO: TRALALA formed back in 2003 where they met in a biker bar tucked away in the back roads of Brooklyn, known for it's cheap brews and loud jukebox. The last twelve months have been a blur of non-stop activity with opening spots for Franz Ferdinand, Scissor Sisters, Holly Golightly, The Dirtbombs, Brendan Benson and a debauchery filled tour with Ted Leo on the west coast and Broadcast on the eastern seaboard. Between it all they have also filled New York clubs on their own, and composed pop masterpieces that are available on their Audika Records debut album TRALALA. Includes the tracks "All Fired Up" (as featured on "The L Word"), "The Girls Say", and "Like This". TRALALA have garnered accolades from the finest of tastemakers, and their live performances and songwriting multiply faster than you can say bird flu.Four girls, three boys and even less chords, TRALALA serve one purpose only. To have a good time, and to spread it to the masses, to the folks who have been robbed of their desires to put on a record and just have fun. TRALALA believes it is OK to shake your hips to rock and roll, it's OK to have a busted heart as long as you nurse it with a stiff drink and a night out on the town. So before you call it a night, stay out a bit longer, carouse the streets until you hear some tambourines shaking real hard and come say hello to TRALALA. .

EVERY MOVE A PICTURE

ARTIST / BAND: EVERY MOVE A PICTURE
SONG (MP3): SIGNS OF LIFE
ALBUM: Appetite For Construction
FILE UNDER: Indie / Rock
LABEL: V2 Records
INFO: Rock ‘n’ roll loves a “Cinderella story” that counters the epic disasters. Every so often the stars align & magic is made - there is the odd occasion where a couple of dollars and some hard work can produce something special. This can be said for Every Move a Picture. Hailing from San Francisco, their story begins with a childhood friendship between singer/guitarist Brent Messenger, and bass player Joey Fredrick. Fast forward a couple of years with both playing in the early 00’s in various SF combos, at times with drummer Dan Aquino. However, it was in early in 2004, that everything gelled together in what would become Every Move a Picture. But, there was a piece lacking – a guitarist, who was also a dab hand with cool keyboard sounds. And that missing part of the puzzle, amazingly, was supplied with a simple advert in the online classifieds of Craigslist. Having just moved down to SF from Portland, Oregon, Allen Davis, guitarist, keyboard player, and overall sound-whiz, answered the call. It was as if some crazy fate had intervened launching the perfect player the band’s way, & the story of Every Move a Picture truly began.

MICO

ARTIST / BAND: MICO
SONG (MP3): MOTION PICTURES
ALBUM: Our Living Language
FILE UNDER: Indie / Shoegaze / A'cappella
LABEL: http://www.g7welcomingcommittee.com/
INFO: A beacon of light in the back-asswards cattle-ranching haven/oil patch known as Alberta, Mico successfully mix dark yet melodic rock with intelligent socio-political insight.
Mico was formed in 1998 by John and Troy in Banff, Alberta, following the dissolution of John's previous band, Red Fisher. Their debut CD "Standing Inside A Shadow" came out on Edmonton label, Does Everyone Stare? in 2001. Mico underwent a series of member and instrument changes following the release of their second album "Outside the Unbearable Grows" (G7 Welcoming Committee) in June 2003, but has solidified the lineup, and is better than ever.

KADDISFLY

ARTIST / BAND: KADDISFLY
SONG (MP3): EMPIRE
ALBUM: The Four Seasons EP
FILE UNDER: Progressive / Alternative / Rock
LABEL: http://www.hopelessrecords.com
INFO: An influential 20th century composer once posed a very troubling question: If music is dying, are musicians the ones who are killing it? Have these same musicians lost their natural intuition for creativity and vision in our vast sea of genre expectation, egocentric notoriety, and mainstream acceptance? Moments after the completion of their 2005 aural collage, it becomes apparent that the Oregon?s Kaddisfly has both struggled with this question, and emphatically reacted to its significance. Holding on to every sense of their artistic integrity, the band has consciously put its faith in one cyclical principal of the humanistic third dimension: Intelligent, engaging, and passionate art will forever remain an unwavering esoteric constant. From a linear perspective, the concept

DAVID VANDERVELDE

ARTIST / BAND: DAVID VANDERVELDE
SONG (MP3): JACKET
ALBUM: JACKET 7’’
FILE UNDER: Rock
LABEL: Secretly Canadian
INFO: David Vandervelde appeared before us one hot summer day like a dynamo. The sound we heard coming through in stereo was that of our coming-of-age years screaming back at us - a faithful reminder that our beauteous days of bowing before pin-up rock stars and carving iconographic logos on desktops and in famous treetrunks have not passed us by. No, David Vandervelde is here to remind us that the truest, most primal and addictive properties of rock n' roll are ageless. Indeed, this Chicagoan (by way of the dunes of West Michigan) recorded the A-side to his debut single a few years ago at age 19, yet he shows the maturity and swagger of a man much longer in the tooth. Bearing a resemblance to Marc Bolan and David Bowie on these two songs, we're eagerly anticipating his upcoming debut full-length, which will open the door into a much broader musical universe.

SOMEONE STILL LOVES YOU BORIS YELTSIN

ARTIST / BAND: SOMEONE STILL LOVES YOU BORIS YELTSIN
SONG (MP3): OREGON GIRL
ALBUM: Broom
FILE UNDER: Pop / Indie
LABEL: Polyvinyl
INFO: Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, a band, couldn’t list a single music blog until their lo-fi MP3s and low-res JPEGs made them worldwide icons of Blogdom in 2005. Their debut record, Broom is an expertly crafted indie pop gem. Spin magazine read an SSLYBY blog, downloaded their music and declared the Missouri band “could succeed The Shins.” Then a slew of bloggers ranked them ahead of Wilco and Iron & Wine in Leafblower’s annual “Top Bands of America Today”.“Internet fame doesn’t make sense to us,” says drummer and main songwriter Philip Dickey. “I don’t think our lead singer has an e-mail address.” read more from the source...

THE BE GOOD TANYAS

ARTIST / BAND: THE BE GOOD TANYAS
SONG (MP3): OOTISCHENIA
ALBUM: HELLO LOVE
FILE UNDER: Folk / Country / Soul
LABEL: Nettwerk Records
INFO: If you've ever seen a really good quilt, you know that it'snot just a “patchwork.” The hands that put it together may be from more than one artisan. The elements of its creation can come from all sorts of sources: new textiles; old garments;stitching utilitarian and decorative, showy and subtle. But the result is a warm, cohesive whole.

INGRID MICHAELSON

ARTIST / BAND: INGRID MICHAELSON
SONG (MP3): BREAKABLE
ALBUM: Girls And Boys
FILE UNDER: Indie / Pop / Alternative
INFO: "The Brooklyn-based Michaelson sings with a choppy sort of breathiness, and gives me the impression that even she doesn't quite know which way a note is going to go until her elastic voice lets it fly. I find myself drawn to her freshness, a not-quite-like-anyone-else quality that she presents in a most familiar-seeming container." -Jeremy Schlosberg of Fingertips
You can buy her first album, "Slow the Rain" from CDBABY.com.

THE POSTMARKS

ARTIST / BAND: THE POSTMARKS
SONG (MP3): GOODBYE
ALBUM: The Postmarks
FILE UNDER: Indie / Pop / Classical
LABEL: http://www.unfilteredrecords.com/
INFO: For The Postmarks, stepping outside of their private, music making world is a brand new experience. Describing the environment where their songs and recordings have been carefully crafted as a "heartbreak factory", the band has decided to open up the doors and allow the world in for the first time. It is an act that reveals the journey the members took from the creative mire of emptiness to the overflowing well of heartbreak. A journey that helped them emerge at the forefront of the nouveau pop movement. The Postmarks' approach focuses on classic song writing and features the blissful vocals of chanteuse Tim Yehezkely, who drew the music from a production of melancholy to the solace of a broken heart on the mend, where it discovered a place of sunny amnesty. All these facets have come together to create a sound that has been described as "a suburban bedroom symphony suffused with post-teenage heartbreak and painstaking pointillism." by The New Times Broward/Palm Beach.

PABLO

ARTIST / BAND: PABLO
SONG (MP3): LOSER CREW
ALBUM: Half The Time
FILE UNDER: Indie / Americana / Reggaeton
LABEL: http://curbappealrecords.com/
INFO: Paul Schalda has a ghost's voice, an old haunted soul that shivers its way up through his mouth to share its cracked-glasses view of the world with those of us lucky enough to listen. New York's Pablo is the vehicle for that voice and the lives it's lived. Previously heard draped over the Pavement-influenced treble clang of outerborough indie rock heroes AWEK (see "NY: The Next Wave" on Kanine Records), Schalda's distinct and affecting vocals stand at the center of Pablo, drawing chills from the tight economy of his lyrics and conveying something deeper than most words usually get across anyway. It's smart music that connects at gut level, a rare treasure in a crowded space. Clipped stories prop themselves up against solitary acoustic guitar, or find a full body in the stellar and spare accompaniment provided by brother Will Schalda (ex-REALISTICS) and his varied keys, wife Maggie Schalda's harmonies, and the Strandberg Brothers' ample multi-instrumentation. The result is a sound singular enough to equally evoke Odetta and the Replacements, and one that's perked up the ears of KEXP's "John in the Morning" and landed the outfit support slots up and down the East Coast with Matt Pond PA, Earlimart, Brendan Benson, myself and more. On the heels of a well-received self-released EP, Pablo's first full-length recording is set to be released this May on Brooklyn's own 230 Records.

OWEN

ARTIST / BAND: OWEN
SONG (MP3): BAD NEWS
ALBUM: At home with owen
FILE UNDER: Indie / Acoustic / Psychobilly
LABEL: http://www.polyvinylrecords.com/
INFO: Owen is Mike Kinsella. For nearly ten years now, Mike has been in some of Chicago's favorite bands- American Football, Cap'n Jazz, Joan of Arc and Owls. Of those, he has probably been most closely associated with American Football, in which he did much of the songwriting and guitar-playing, and all of the singing. With Owen, Mike takes American Football's sound to it's next logical level. Mike writes, performs, and records all of his own material. However, that doesn't mean he can't rock out live- which he has done with back-up help from Kyle Fischer of Rainer Maria on Kyle's recent tour and opening on the last few Rainer Maria tours.

RODDY FRAME

ARTIST / BAND: RODDY FRAME
SONG (MP3): PORTASTUDIO
ALBUM: Western Skies
FILE UNDER: Folk Rock / Acoustic / Experimental
LABEL: http://www.redemption-records.com/
INFO: When he was still in his teens, Roddy Frame was already being compared to Elvis Costello, generally considered by critics to be one of the finest songwriters of all time. Such grand praise could place unreasonable expectations on a developing young talent and crush the creativity blooming within. However, Frame has been able to let his songwriting abilities evolve without any consideration given to the critics or commercial radio. Frame began his career with Aztec Camera in January 1980. As Aztec Camera's vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter, Frame immediately became the darling of the U.K. music press with the band's 1983 debut, High Land, Hard Rain. On tracks like "Walk Out to Winter" and "Back on Board," Frame sang poetic lyrics about love lost and found, two themes he'd revisit with an increasingly mature outlook through a number of albums. True to his punk roots, Frame abandoned Aztec Camera's jangle pop sound when it became fashionable among British new wave acts. From country to soul, Frame utilized the Aztec Camera moniker to pay homage to his influences. Indifferent to the hip tastes of his followers, Frame covered Cyndi Lauper's Top Ten ballad "True Colors" with undeniable sincerity and transformed Van Halen's heavy metal anthem "Jump" into a folksy love song. After 1995's Frestonia, Frame jettisoned the Aztec Camera name and released The North Star in 1998. The album received critical praise and this time he wasn't compared to Costello.

ACTION REACTION

ARTIST / BAND: ACTION REACTION
SONG (MP3): SINNERS ALGEBRA
ALBUM: ActionReaction Tour EP
FILE UNDER: Alternative / Psychedelic / New Wave
LABEL: http://www.equalvision.com/
INFO: Jason Gleason is widely considered as one of the quintessential torchbearers of the emocore boom. As frontman in Further Seems Forever, a role previously played by Chris Carabba (Dashboard Confessional), it would be easy to assume that his new project, ActionReaction, would continue to build on the same aesthetic that helped him bring Further Seems Forever to stardom. But perhaps it's time to entertain the notion that Gleason's a firm believer in the road less traveled. After splitting with his former band and label, and with only a few dollars in his pocket, Gleason moved from Florida to New Jersey to be with long-time friend, Bella. To make ends meet, Gleason and Bella joined a painting and carpentry crew which included her former Element 101 bandmate Salvatore. As a result of grueling, twelve-hour days sanding floors and painting atop 50-foot ladders, a bond was formed which resulted in the early stages of ActionReaction. With a rotating cast of friends, they began writing material as a release from their daily grind. Fueled by working-class ennui, the result was liberation from the constraints of previous musical endeavors. Gleason was finally free to expand on his passionate and spiritual vocal and lyrical stylings that earned him a steady following during his days in Further Seems Forever. Before long the three of them were not only working and playing together, but living under one roof.

POP LEVI

ARTIST / BAND: POP LEVI
SONG (MP3): BLUE HONEY
ALBUM: BLUE HONEY EP
FILE UNDER: Pop / New Wave / Soul
LABEL: www.ninjatune.net
INFO: Conceived in a London hospital and born to a Jewish doctor and Gentile nurse, Pop Levi has led what one might call a "melodic" life. He began studying piano at 3, joined a gospel choir at 7, started collecting records at 9 and, soon after, wrote his first song, "Through The Window Of My Life". Although he quickly became a prolific songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Levi went unnoticed by the music business for many years. A move to Liverpool in 1997 saw Levi enter a prolonged period of bread-line living where he set up a commune with Snap Ant and Karl Webb. Whilst sharing a large dilapidated Victorian house with these and other like-minded artists, he founded the avant-garde post-rock group Super Numeri. Early recordings of the band found their way to London and in 2002, Levi found himself signed to fabled label Ninja Tune Recordings with Super Numeri. The debut single "The Electric Horse Garden" won widespread critical acclaim and the subsequent album "Great Aviaries" and EP "The Coastal Bird Scene" quickly became regarded as modern underground classics. Hot on the heels of relative success, Levi was approached by Danny Hunt of Ladytron to join the band on bass guitar for their upcoming World Tour. He duly accepted and spent 2003-4 flying from show to show whilst writing and recording material for his planned "Foxwatch" LP, to be released on Hunt's Invicta Hi-Fi label. Although "Foxwatch" remained unfinished, the first Pop Levi releases came from those sessions. The "Rude Kinda Love" single (and its accompanying controversial video) gained rave reviews and was placed #25 in the UK Indie Chart, whilst the follow-up Christmas release "Reindeer In My Heart" made its way to US radio stations.
