INFO: Benni Hemm Hemm released the E.P. SummerPlate in the summer of 2003. The E.P. was a solo release, produced by Benedikt H. Hermannsson. The E.P. got one review that was very nice, by Árni Matthíasson at Morgunblaðið. After the first and only SummerPlate concert at Gallerí Nema Hvað, Benni moved to Italy for a few months. There he wrote the bulk of the first full album under the name of Benni Hemm Hemm. The first performance of the big band of Benni Hemm Hemm, was on the 1st of May, 2004, at the 5th birthday of Kitchen Motors. And after that performance there was no turning back. In November the band started recording in Sundlaugin, the best studio in Iceland. There were seven songs recorded on 24 tracks on a very busy weekend.Then in May 2005 the band recorded five more tracks in Klink & Bank. Klink & Bank was a very big working space for Icelandic artists that was rented out for free.On the 2nd of September 2005 the Benni Hemm Hemm album was released in Iceland, on Smákökurnar.On the 20th of January 2006 the album was released in Japan, on P-Vine Records.On the 18th of August 2006 the album was released in Europe, on Morr Music.On the 5th of September 2006 the album was released in the US, also on Morr Music.

INFO: The Earlies is that rare sort of album that defies easy categorisation, embraced by fans of both indie music and dance music. The Earlies' music is a hodge-podge of sounds and influences, combining subtle electronics and clever samples with lush instrumentation--from oboes and flutes to pianos and cellos--and layered vocals. But the album is no overblown experiment in studio magic. The four members of the Earlies, with a huge, revolving roster of musical co-conspirators, combine all of these things into beautiful and affecting pop, though of a slightly skewed variety. The influence of both Brian Wilson and early, pre-breakthrough Mercury Rev looms large over These Were..., mixed with a more contemporary awareness of the electronic music of Boards of Canada, Manitoba and Mum. The overall effect is an album that is wholly exhilarating, with songs that both soothe and soar, ranging from the blissfully chilled "One of Us Is Dead" to the country psychedelia of "Morning Wonder" to "The Devil's Country", which sounds like a spaghetti-western collaboration between Giant Sand and Ennio Morricone. This is organic chill-out music, to be sure, but the Earlies are never less than totally engaging.

INFO: Bell X1 and Damien Rice used to be a band called Juniper. Juniper berries are used to make gin. "Gin and tonic dressing gown..." is a lyric from Bell X1's debut album, Neither am I, released in 2000 in Ireland. Ireland used to be poor, and now it's blingin, with scattered showers. Showers of critical acclaim followed the release of their (multi platinum n ting) second record, Music in Mouth, in 2003 in the UK and Ireland; the public too were keen. Keane, Snow Patrol, The Frames, Bon Jovi (?!) and Elliot Smith are some of the people that Bell X1 have toured with. With the song Eve, the Apple of My Eye on the latest OC soundtrack, the band recently played in New York and LA, where some of the OC cast came to see the show. Showing their ignorance, the band didn't know who they were being introduced to, bringing to mind the meeting of Homer Simpson and Billy Corgan - "Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins" ..."Homer Simpson, smiling politely". Their current record Flock was released in Ireland in October 2005 and went straight to number 1 in the pop charts, followed by many sold out shows and all that jazz. INFO: Loney, Dear is the X-man band. Loney, Dear is also the disguise of multi-instrumentalist and audio homecooking expert Emil Svanängen. In the tiny, sweltering hot Stockholm studio apartment, or in the cool basement of his parents house is where all the magic happens. The outside world has no idea of whats going on. Two records a year is his M.O., and by new years eve of 2009 all is said to come to a close. Everything is recorded in a very modest homestudio setup, using a minidisc mic and a set of headphones to avoid disturbing his neighbors. When Emil recently moved and had to get rid of his floor lamp, he finally budged and bought his first micstand. Emil has developed an almost manic approach to his songwriting. Hard work and more hard work being the only recipe, allowing for experimentation and reinvention. Textural newcomers include clarinets, floortoms and pumporgans to enhance the sonic landscape surrounding the beautiful melodies that sometimes echo age old church hymns. INFO: Sydney band Youth Group’s story-to-date reads something like a three-act play. The first act begins in 1998, with founding members Toby Martin and Danny Allen forming an indie rock band that releases its debut album ‘Urban & Eastern’ in 2000. The record establishes Youth Group as one of Australia’s best kept underground secrets.
Cut to the second act of the play and things aren’t quite as rosy. Occasional shitty gigs, money issues, day jobs and departing members make things a little tough, and it takes the whole of 2003 for the band to get it all together and record its second album, ‘Skeleton Jar’. But what a record it turns out to be.

INFO: Ted Leo and The Pharmacists' latest album Shake The Sheets is a triumph on nearly every level. With a fantastic producer (Chris Shaw) and a great studio (James Iha's Stratosphere in Manhattan), Ted was finally able to achieve the cleanest, biggest sound he has ever had. You might remember Ted Leo from his exploits many years back in the New York hard-core scene with bands like Citizens Arrest and Animal Crackers. More likely, you remember his inspiring role as songwriter and leader of (legendary?) DC mod-punk band, Chisel, from 1990 to 1997. You may even be lucky enough to have caught the short-lived but long remembered Sin Eaters, whom Ted fronted from 1997-1998, or his touring stint with the Spinanes during those same years. Probably, though, you are most familiar with the understated but forceful path he has been blazing as a solo artist since 1997. His songs are fragile but proud, and exalt in social and musical purpose, with inescapable melodies and tangible yet romantic lyrics that could easily draw comparisons to greats such as Billy Bragg or Alex Chilton, and somehow leave you thinking of Curtis Mayfield and CRASS...

INFO: Irene grew into a full scale band quite spontaneously in 2005. The members are all friends from the local pub in Gteborg, Sweden. Some songs that Tobias Isaksson (aka Bobby) had written just couldn't wait to be performed live. The dudes that did the first show had so much fun that they wanted to stick around. By the autumn of 2005 Irene was an octet with semi-permanent members. Shortly after that the record label Labrador signed the band. Irene likes to record as much as possible live, in one take, up to six people letting it out in one room. Only the final touch (vocals, trumpets and handclaps etc) is added afterwards. The result is a vivid sound marked by the 60s, Motown soul, girl-groups, American west coast- and contemporary pop. The members of Irene are beach-crooners, punks and next-door nice-guys. All in one.

Beach House formed in the summer, it was very late at night and there was a lot of heat. Their songs start simple and grow organically like tiny skeletons that multiply layers of necessary flesh. In the Beach House world, outside influences have been purely atmospheric. There are many groups and artists that have entranced the duo: Zombies, Brian Wilson, Neil Young, Big Star, Chris Bell, the list goes on; however, there isn't one particular group or artist that Beach House admires more than another. By not forcing the way their songs come to fruition and by allowing all of their ideas to exist and play freely, an otherworldly space is created: organs, slide guitars, reverb, harmony, layers, accidents, echoes and melodies stand by themselves like the ones in everyone's childhood memories.

INFO: Kunek is a six-person ensemble from Stillwater, Oklahoma. Originally founded as an instrumental project, kunek’s unique perspective on melody and rhythm has grown into a distinctive style of songwriting which pulls together elements of jazz, classical, folk and modern experimental rock. Each member acts equally as a cog in this machine that evokes emotion in the listener; be it happiness, sadness, hope, or tranquility. Their music places as much importance on cello and drums as it does on piano or guitar. Listening to kunek, you realize that the pieces fit, and the outcome is inspiring. After playing only a few dates at select clubs, kunek has already been praised by the Oklahoma music press as a “great musical experience for anyone who likes to feel emotion in the music that they listen to.” Their songs have rested securely at the top of the charts in multiple genres for more than a year on http://www.garageband.com/, one of the most reputable websites in the industry for independent music. INFO: in a time when so called "honest and minimalistic alternative rock" is ever more popular, glacier is doing the complete opposite. the five members grew up in a time when their heroes celebrated untouchable and walls of sounds. this love for the more atmospheric, ethereal and orchestral music is what glacier is trying to revive and often leads them to using the more obscure and almost forgotten sounds of the past. the impossible goal is of course to create a timeless sound out of unmodern and new influences. glacier is not afraid to quote or recycle once sound revolutionary ideas. bands such as elo, pink floyd, spiritualized (spacemen 3) are just as much influences as sonic youth, pulp or radiohead. the result of these influences produce an often melancholic and dark musical structure of many lows and sometimes a few highs. the world through their eyes is seen with an almost nihilistic or outsider view but with enough self reflection to realise that they don't necessarily have the solution but may be the problem themselves. they still try though to achieve a certain cloudiness or distance between reality and fantasy and the music mirrors this by often shifting it's directness or indirectness to the listener. glacier's live show has been known to transfer small clubs into arenas equipped a mobile light show of walls of fog, lasers and most likely the lights left over from the 1973 tour of some forgotten rock dinosaur. they don't wish to be the people next door, but to be an escape for the people next door from our otherwise mundane and very real world.

INFO: The Winnebago Orchestra were formed in England in 2000/2001. They were originally formed by multi-instrumentalist Spencer Roberts and singer Andy Davies with the introduction of Caroline Trettine as singer an additional guitar in 2004, however Andy has since gone on to pastures new, so Spencer and Caroline along with Lee Beddow, Bob Bowman, Pete Geoghegan and Liz Ralls make up the Orchestra in all its glory.Together they perform a singularly eclectic, yet brilliant blend of melodic English beat poetry and song.
