INFO: We’ll address the obvious question first: what’s the difference between a Robert Pollard album and one by Guided By Voices? The answer’s easy: everything, and nothing. Score!Guided By Voices, one of the most widely admired and influential rock groups of the 90s and beyond were famous for exactly two things. The first was — for complicated reasons — drinking beer, the second was writing an astounding quantity of really great rock songs, in a dizzying variety of styles and arrangements, and recording them on whatever equipment was at hand, whether boombox or four-track or professional recording studio. The other second thing was a revolving-door line-up whose only constant was singer/songwriter, Robert Pollard, whose output moreover overflowed, synchronically, on a seemingly endless series of side projects, solo records, and bizarre collaborations with, confusingly, ex-members of the band, current members of the band, and random passersby (including the co-founder of this very record label, Mac McCaughan, who sent Pollard a tape of instrumentals by mistake and found to his surprise that he had formed a pseudo-band called Go Back Snowball and released an album).read more from the source...
