Sóley

ARTIST / BAND: Sóley
SONG (MP3): I´ll Drown
ALBUM: We Sink
FILE UNDER: Indie

LABEL: morr music

INFO: This is the debut EP by Sóley Stefánsdóttir, a 23 year old girl from Reykjavik, student of composition and a member of the Icelandic indie-collective Seabear - it's the debut of a singer and a dreamer: Six songs held together by Sóleys piano play and her voice - because every of her compositions come into being while she is singing to the piano. Sóley loves this: by her own account she's actually singing all day long. On 'Theater Island' she uses a lot of instruments though: Strings, guitars or just some electronic crackles and noises.read more from the source...

Scuba

ARTIST / BAND: Scuba
SONG (MP3): M.A.R.S. (Machinedrum Remix)
ALBUM :DJ-Kicks
FILE UNDER: Electro,  remix,
LABEL: !k7
The one thing that Paul Rose, better known as Scuba, really doesn’t want you to do is to try and pin him down. His roots are in London’s dubstep scene, but he lives in the techno metropolis of Berlin. His music is located at some unspecified point between those two cities - bass heavy, sparse, full of atmosphere and with propulsive rhythms, but above all impossible to define. His label, Hotflush, is one of dubstep’s spiritual homes, with releases by Distance, Benga and Mount Kimbie, but it also has that hard-to-categorize quality Warp had in the ’90s. He is, in a word, a maverick.

Zambri

ARTIST / BAND: Zambri
SONG (MP3): Heather
ALBUM: Glossolalia
FILE UNDER: vocal, Indie, dark, experimental, pop
LABEL: kanine records
INFO: For a first introduction into the world of Cristi Jo & Jessica Zambri, Kanine Records will be releasing Zambri’s debut EP “Glossolalia” on Nov. 8, 2011.
Zambri mixes experimental beats and dueling female vocals with captivating melodies to create unromantic love songs. Filled with gothic and avant-garde pop vocals, the songs might sound familiar, like a lost Siouxsie and the Banshees or Kate Bush classic, but they manage to bring it to an altogether new place. As if remixed by Gang Gang Dance, Zambri lands perfectly amid contemporaries Health, Grimes, Lykke Li, and The Knife.read more from the source...

Inspired and the Sleep

Little Red

ARTIST / BAND: Little Red
SONG (MP3): "Get A Life"
ALBUM: Midnight Remember
FILE UNDER:pop, Rock,
LABEL:true panther
INFO:Melbourne’s Little Red have been away a while, growing up, growing down, tasting the sweet and the bittersweet in equal measures. The band now returns with the historically ‘difficult’ second album, but in this particular case they have delivered an album that is truly a quantum leap in songwriting and production. It is an inverse manifestation of the natural rock’n’roll order that stumps so many. Midnight Remember is a true accomplishment and a marked and impressive step forward in craft for primary songwriter Dominic Byrne. In the last 6 months the album has found an amazing breadth of fans in the band’s native Australia and on 10.25 it will finally see it’s remastered (with bonus tracks) release in the United States and Canada. read more from the source...

EXITMUSIC

ARTIST / BAND: EXITMUSIC

MP3: "The Sea"

ALBUM: From Silence

FILE UNDER: Indie

LABEL: secretly canadian

INFO: Sometimes, listening to Exitmusic, it's hard to tell exactly whether the goosebumps you're getting are from the parts that are chillingly beautiful and melodic or the ones that are aching and guttural. Or further, the ones that are creepily sparse and disembodied. The New York City duo -- Aleksa Palladino and Devon Church -- doesn't care when the chill runs down your spine, they just hope their music provokes some kind of primal feeling. Church explains, "It's like what Aleksa sings at the end of 'The Sea': 'And you turn your back to life... Oh, sorrow.' We want our music to confront people in a gentle but powerful way, to make them feel something."

Today The Moon, Tomorrow The Sun

ARTIST / BAND: Today The Moon, Tomorrow The Sun

MP3: We Were Wild

ALBUM: WILDFIRE

FILE UNDER: Electro / Indie / Rock

LABEL: Greyday Records

INFO: I’ve always been a bit ambivalent about Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun. On the one hand, their dance-infused electro rock tunes have always been well-constructed and easy on the ears. On the other, their music has always had an air of timidity about it, lacking in bite and urgency. But all that may change with the release of their upcoming full-length, Wildfire, due out May 7th. The band recently posted the album’s opening track and lead single, “We Were Wild,” to their Soundcloud page and while all the familiar elements remain — the pulsating synths, the punchy percussion, the fuzz-ridden bass and effects-laden guitars — there is a tenacity to the track, both in the music and in Lauren Gibson’s vocals, that has been lacking in prior efforts. There’s also an aura of bigness to the song, a swelling grandiosity that feels neither forced nor overbearing. It remains to be seen what the rest of Wildfirehas in store for us, but if the rest of the album can measure close to “We Were Wild,” you can count me among the believers.

THE PAUSES

ARTIST / BAND: THE PAUSES

MP3s: Go North / Hands Up

ALBUM: A Cautionary Tale

FILE UNDER: Electronica / Indie / Rock

LABEL: New Granada

INFO: Despite amassing a following, scene status, and praise from regional press right out of the gate, Orlando indie-rock band The Pauses released their debut album A Cautionary Tale after only about, oh, TWO YEARS of existence. The official excuse is something about wanting do to things "properly." So they saved money through a successful Kickstarter campaign (a marvel since their fans' bank accounts have a perfectly inverse relationship with their obvious wealth in taste) spurred by a cute handmade video (http://vimeo.com/10712285) and headed up to Baltimore to record this bad boy with the legendary J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines), even enlisting three-quarters of the dude's own band. His wife too? Sure, why not.

MP3: Yesterday Euphoria

ALBUM: YOY

FILE UNDER: Indietronic, Krautpop

LABEL: bureau-b

INFO: These four gentlemen play eccentric weird folk electro-kraut-melodic indie rock like you never heard before. Their first release on Bureau B ("Original Bedouin Culture", released 2009) was highly acclaimed by the critics ("krautrock for the post Radiohead generation", see below). The band had raised the bar to dizzying heights on their first album – with "YOY" they have risen even higher.
