CHET

ARTIST / BAND: CHET
SONG (MP3): DON'T LET YOUR CRUEL HEART COUNT ME IN
ALBUM: FIGHT AGAINST DARKNESS
FILE UNDER: Soul / Rock / Indie
INFO: There's a certain rare chemistry that occurs when gorgeous, sweeping pop melodies are passed through 15 feet of plate reverb before being committed to hundreds of yards of analog tape; the promise of a polished outcome is forfeited for something more genuine. It was a process so common place 50 years ago that it was less a gamble than an endeavour in the sweaty performance & hopeful calculation of the outcome.Equally, it is a process in which Victoria BC's Chet thrive.read more from the source...

MONTAG

ARTIST / BAND: MONTAG
SONG (MP3): GOING PLACES
ALBUM: Going Places
FILE UNDER: Pop / Western Swing / French pop
LABEL: Carpark Records
INFO: Going Places was entirely self-recorded and self-engineered at Montag’s home studio, Micro Ohne Studio 3 in Vancouver. Adding to his solo-project, Montag assembled an all-star line-up of guest artists including long-time collaborators and friends Anthony Gonzales of M83, Amy Millan of Stars, and Québécois hip-hop artist, Ghislain Poirier. Label-mate Victoria Legrand of Beach House and touring partners Au Revoir Simone add vocals, as do Vancouver-based singers Ida Nilsen of Great Aunt Ida and Leah Abramson. One of the record’s most beautiful moments is the duet, Softness, I Forgot Your Name, featuring Polaris-prize winning Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy. Recorded long-distance, the duet features surprising touches of modern opera, and as a man-on-man duet, is a rarity in indiepop music.
On the title track, Going Places, Montag recruits even more collaborators (70 to be exact) from 15 different countries. Wishing to capture new sounds and to charge the song with a real sense of traveling, Montag launched an open call for clips, the online “We Have Sound Cyber-Collaboration Project.” The result is a condensed collage of motion and travel and a sort of thesis statement for the entire album. Going Places is an experience of the love of music, life and movement.

BILL CALLAHAN

ARTIST / BAND: BILL CALLAHAN
SONG (MP3): SYCAMORE
ALBUM: Woke on a Whaleheart
FILE UNDER: Progressive
LABEL: http://www.dragcity.com/
INFO: Callahan started out as a highly experimental artist, using substandard instruments and recording equipment. His early songs often nearly lacked melodic structure and were clumsily played on poorly tuned guitars (possibly influenced by Jandek, whom Callahan admires), resulting in the dissonant sounds on his self-released cassettes and debut album Sewn to the Sky. Much of his early output was instrumental, a stark contrast to the lyrical focus of his later work. He used lo-fi techniques not because of an aesthetic preference but because he didn't have any other possiblitiy to make music. Once he signed a contract with Drag City, he also started to use recording studios and a greater variety of instruments for his records.

PELA

ARTIST / BAND: PELA
SONG (MP3): LOST TO THE LONESOME
ALBUM: Anytown Graffiti
FILE UNDER: Rock
LABEL: http://www.worlds-fair.net/
INFO: Pela is an American rock & roll band. At a time when the word “America” has never been more fraught with meaning, songs that speak to our basic feelings and emotions about life could never be more resonant. Lost amongst all the geo-political tumult are the stories of every day America; the aches and pains and the beautiful possibilities. Yet amidst this turmoil and uncertainty, new stories are being written and told by a new generation of American bands. Pela is clearly one of those voices.

THE BLOW

ARTIST / BAND: THE BLOW
SONG (MP3): PILE OF GOLD
ALBUM: Paper Television
FILE UNDER: Tropical / R&B / Jam Band
LABEL: Tomlab
INFO: Hold a piece of pop music in your hand. How heavy is it? If you threw it, could you break the window of a passing car? Could you break a tooth? For several years, The Blow have been hard at work developing an essential pop music formula, fashioned, as the best popular music is, with the function of getting under the skin of the people. What that music does once it gets there is what makes The Blow worth thinking about. Fascinated with the physics of pop construction, The Blow makes music that holds a weightless gravity.

NORTHERN STATE

ARTIST / BAND: NORTHERN STATE
SONG (MP3): dying in stereo
ALBUM: Dying in Stereo
FILE UNDER: Hi p Hop
LABEL: Ipecac Records
INFO: There are three of us, and we’ve been friends for a very long time. Our names are Sprout, Hesta Prynn and Spero. Our government names are Robyn Goodmark, Julie Potash, and Correne Spero, respectively. We grew up on Long Island, in the real suburban part, not in some seaside town.
Sprout and Hesta Prynn lived down the block from one another. Spero grew up south of the Expressway and met Sprout in High School. Sprout knew every word of every old-school hip hop song. Spero had purple hair but surprisingly knew most of the words to ‘O.P.P’. Spero and Sprout became connected at the hip and tore it up on the dance floor to ‘Black Sheep’ at every sweet sixteen. Eventually Sprout introduced Spero to her friend Julie Potash. Julie was just a young Hesta Prynn waiting to happen. Spero was into it.

WALKER KONG

ARTIST / BAND: WALKER KONG
SONG (MP3): EXECUTIONER SONG
ALBUM: there goes the sun
FILE UNDER: Pop / Folk Rock / Experimental
LABEL: http://www.magicmarkerrecords.com/

INFO: Walker Kong was formed in the the spring of 1998 when Jeremy Ackerman called upon four musically untrained female friends to help perform a collection of simple pop songs he had written over the course of a long, hot New Mexico summer. Sounding like a cross between the Modern Lovers, Elvis Costello and the Shaggs, the band began a strange assent through the ranks of a Minneapolis music scene. During these early years there was a vital music community in the Twin Cities that shared a sense of purpose and encouraged many styles of music to coexist on the same stage. Minneapolis based groups of the time such as Smattering, Lifter Puller, Triangle, the Selby Tigers and Florida were all friends and inspirations to WK as they progressed into a more refined ensemble. read more from the source...

Goldrush

Artist / Band: Goldrush

Song (MP3): Heaven's My Destination
Album: The Heart Is The Place
File Under: Indie
Label: http://www.betterlookingrecords.com/
Info: With their new album, released throughout the world in late Jan/early Feb, Goldrush have pulled it back. With The Heart Is The Place they have created a stunning and defiant record that warms our hearts to the core. It’s a turning point for a band that were on the verge of throwing it all in… a record that signals triumph over adversity. When Goldrush started trying to work on the first couple of tracks (over a year ago) they felt utterly burned out. To them, none of the new material sounded powerful, emotional or original. They couldn’t get anywhere near where they wanted to be, and they had spent most of their recording budget. One member left the band, another moved to New York whilst the rest hid in their homes in Steventon Oxfordshire. For the first time in two years of constant touring, the band came to an abrupt halt.?Fortunately Goldrush had a ‘cowshed, turned studio’ to fall back into. They started from scratch, and hired producer / musician James Rutledge (has worked with Dangermouse, Kevin Shields etc) to work things out with them. Goldrush had previously worked with the legendary David Fridmann (Mercury Rev / Flaming Lips), but Rutledge took a different tag, and encouraged the band to be more sonically adventurous, whilst simultaneously helping them re-discover their supreme song writing ability.

THE NATIONAL

Artist / Band: THE NATIONALSong (MP3): FAKE EMPIRE
Album: Boxer
File Under: Indie / Rock / Gothic
Label: Beggars Banquet
Info: The National are a band of New Yorkers transplanted from Cincinnati, Ohio: Matt Berninger, Aaron Dessner, Bryce Dessner, Bryan Devendorf, and Scott Devendorf. What each member of the band does is not that important, but what they do together seems increasingly more so… When last we heard from The National, they’d released and toured behind their Beggars Banquet debut, Alligator, an album whose reception closely mirrored the kind of sounds they made on record—it started out quiet, and ended up very, very loud. Alligator became one of the most widely discussed and critically acclaimed independent albums of 2005—“album of the year” to one Los Angeles Times critic. read more from the source...

COCOROSIE

They are the third and fourth daughters of spiritualist Timothy Casady and artist/teacher Tina Hunter. As a small child, Red writes, I was carried in a papoose around sacred Anasazi grounds by my mother and her partner, Brook Medicine Eagle. Periods of my adolescence were spent living in a trailer on the outskirts of Joseph City, Arizona with my father. We spent our time burning ants and hunting rabbits from the burned out chassis of a station wagon. I left at fifteen owing to a feeling of alienation caused in part by my reticence toward a formal education. As soon as I was able to garner the necessary means I sold both day-old flowers in restaurants and expired raffle tickets to the elderly I boarded a bus north to San Francisco.

SLEEPING IN THE AVIARY

Artist / Band: SLEEPING IN THE AVIARY

Song (MP3): ANOTHER GIRL
Album: Oh, This Old Thing?
File Under: Rock / Classic Rock / Comedy
Label: Science of Sound
Info: Thanks to intense, highly entertaining live shows and their addictive, spastic pop songs, Sleeping in the Aviary has in short order become one of Madison, Wisconsin's most intriguing young bands. Their sound could be described as The Thermals vacationing with some Buzzcocked White Stripes, sharing hot tubs with The Kinks and saunas with Nirvana--often sounding frenzied or angry, but strangely good-natured about it. Flashes of rock and roll's history percolate throughout their authentic brand of catchy songs which are of the kind that immediately become implanted in one's brain upon hearing them. The band has also nailed down their ability to play acoustic sets that have proven to be quite intimate and intriguing to witness. read more from the source...

LOVEDRUG

Artist / Band: LOVEDRUG

Song (MP3): HAPPY APPLE POISON
Album: Everything Starts Where It Ends
File Under: Rock / Indie
Label: The Militia Group
Info: Like many great bands, there is something hauntingly spiritual and honest about Lovedrug. The Ohio-based rock band delivers a highbrow sound akin to Spiritualized, Sunny Day Real Estate, or Muse, crossed with the arena grandeur of Queen. A unique crossbreed of art and accessibility, powerful melodies are driven by smartly crafted lyrics of truth, intrigue, love, spite, death and damn near everything in between. Only those who have seen the band live can truly understand the growing phenomenon that is Lovedrug. Regardless of how clich? it may sound, Lovedrug live is truly less a show and more an experience. In playing to a variety of audiences (the band has shared the stage w/ The Killers, Robert Plant, Switchfoot, Sam Phillips, Creeper Lagoon, Eisley, Something Corporate, and Matchbook Romance, to name a few), Lovedrug have won over virtually every audience they?ve met. read more from the source...
