RATATAT

ARTIST / BAND: RATATAT

SONG (MP3): Mirando

ALBUM: LP3

FILE UNDER: Rock / Electronica / Hip Hop

LABEL: beggars group

INFO: Tucked away in a private studio named Old Soul, in Catskill, NY the two musical forces behind Ratatat, Evan and Mike, have collaborated yet again to redefine the current state of instrumental music. This time, the album is called LP3 and though it doesn't use much in the way of hi-tech recording equipment it's still laced with a unique balance of penetrating beats and ethereal riffs. However they broaden their palette of sounds this time around by relying more on keyboard instruments than guitars. Don't worry, Mike's characteristic guitar style is still present on this record but there are also an abundance of new textures emanating from the likes of a harpsichord, a wurlitzer, a mellotron and even a grand piano.

Booka Shade

ARTIST / BAND: Booka Shade

SONG (MP3): The Sun & The Neon Light

ALBUM: The Sun & The Neon Light

FILE UNDER: Electro / Techno / Electronica

LABEL: physical music

INFO: It's the state Massive Attack called Mezzanine, the same headspace occupied by Bill Murray in Lost In Translation: those sensations halfway between sleep and wakefulness brought on by jet-lag or over-indulgence, when reality seems remote and unreachable beyond the hotel window or a mental fug. And it’s the place Walter Merziger and Arno Kammermeier inhabit on their third album, trapped – as the title suggests – in the twilight zone between day and night.

FILE UNDER: Indie Alternative Rock

LABEL: Leon Music art and fashion

INFO: Alibi tom delivers vibrant harmonies, strong playful melodies and sweet hooks. There is a definite willingness to experiment and a refreshing honesty in the lyrics. Bum Kon

SONG (MP3): Giving In

ALBUM: Bum Kon

Bum Kon. Bum Kon recorded two albums and a single in between 1983 and 1986. The single is called 'Drunken Sex Sucks' and was released by Local Anesthetic in 1983. THE EXPLORERS CLUB

ARTIST / BAND: THE EXPLORERS CLUB

SONG (MP3): Do You Love Me?

ALBUM: Freedom Wind

FILE UNDER: Psychedelic / Rock / Pop

LABEL: DEAD OCEANS

INFO: Freedom Wind CD / LP (DOC007, released: 05/20/08)
Great indie rock bands have long made a habit of recasting the music of our parents' youth. Turn on Dr. Dog, Olivia Tremor Control, or the Black Angels for just a few examples of bands who make glorious new music in classic molds. Now take the idea a step further. Take the homage just far enough that you can imagine yourself experiencing, say, the Beach Boys in their prime, but with fresh songs not tempered by a generation of Sweatin' to the Oldies. This is elation without irony. This is the Explorers Club's debut album, Freedom Wind.

Unicycle Loves You

ARTIST / BAND: Unicycle Loves You

SONG (MP3): Hawaii!

ALBUM: Unicycle Loves You

FILE UNDER: Rock / Indie

LABEL: Highwheel Records

INFO: Unicycle founder Jim Carroll crafts tunes and lyrics that can be simultaneously dark and toe-tapping. Hear a Unicycle song once and discover it has burrowed into your frontal cortex. Jon Pollock, after just a few mega-calorie-burning minutes on stage, has the appearance of a hallucinating shaman emerging from a sweat lodge. Nicole Vitale, Baker and Labrada provide a percussive wall of often bouncy, always novel punk driven beats that buoy three-part harmonies and conjure up tuneful artifacts of pop evolution from 1958 to 2008.

Unicycle Loves You self-titled full-length album (produced by Brian Deck) will be released on Highwheel Records June 10, 2008.

The Catalysts

ARTIST / BAND: The Catalysts

SONG (MP3): Goes On Forever

FILE UNDER: Pop / Folk Rock / Psychedelic

LABEL: spirophone

INFO: Ulric Kennedy formed The Catalysts in 1985 but the band, whose early demos sounded like the Sarah EP that never was, failed to realise its potential, as Ulric's role as bassist in The Golden Dawn took precedence soon afterwards.
He revived the band in the mid-90s, almost, but not quite, winning the annual Electric Honey deal which shot Belle and Sebastian to instant cult status.
As of 2006, The Catalysts are back once more, following up the original EP, finally released by Félicité Singles Club in 2004, with a second - Long Distance - which can currently be heard in demo form on the band's MySpace page.

Oh Darling

ARTIST / BAND: Oh Darling

SONG (MP3): Shoulda Never

ALBUM: Oh Darling EP

FILE UNDER: Rock / Indie / Pop

LABEL: Nice Records

INFO: This one clicks for me in the chorus, at the end of the second line, when the melody steps slightly down, into that unresolved place, and just stays there (around 1:11). Goes to show yet again that you never know where a hook is coming from, or why. And this sort of thing doesn't happen in a vacuum--the whole reason that unresolved detour sounds so apt is because of everything that's come before it. For a relatively new band, these guys have recorded something that glows with preternatural charm and know-how.

Label: La Societe Expeditionnaire
Info: The fifth Soltero record, You're No Dream, comes out on May 20 on La Societe Expeditionnaire (PA) and June 2 on Messie Murders (Paris)...two homes to big hearts that I've known for a long time.
The previous records can generally be found online - either through solterosongs.com or the respective label's website. But I'd say you're probably S.O.L. on the first record ("Science Will Figure You Out,") because that sucker is out of print, and I think Defrocked may be as well.

Death To Anders

ARTIST / BAND: Death To Anders

SONG (MP3): Camera Lens

ALBUM: Ficticious Businesses

FILE UNDER: Indie / Rock / Alternative

INFO: The four members of Death to Anders' intelligent utilization of a satirically invigorating story-led lyrical delivery provides for an entertaining scope into the modernistic age we are all familiar with. One can easily hear shades of Isaac Brock and Stephen Malkmus in vocalist Rob Danson’s delivery, with his range impressively stretching from moments of squealing intensity to subdued murmurs of sincere ardency. This is done over an equally impressive instrumental approach, with a wide array of guitars, keys, strings, and an exceptionally tight rhythm section.

Trevor Exter

ARTIST / BAND: Trevor Exter

SONG (MP3): Strawberry Wine

ALBUM: Flying Saucer People EP

FILE UNDER: Acoustic / Pop / Alternative

INFO: I was born in Ithaca, NY and I always played different things but kept coming back to the cello.
I started singing in Brazil and then with De La Guarda here in NYC, now I just sit with the cello and sing. I play it weird though - like a tiny bass or aquatic guitar, and I also hit it sometimes.
You can find me often at Banjo Jim’s, Rockwood, Joe’s Pub, Living Room, Sidewalk and those kinds of places, mostly songwriter hangouts.
I work frequently as a sideman, but I ain’t Yo-Yo Ma!
Come see a show sometime - we’ve been hitting it pretty hard with the band, and I also do solo sets.
