The Cans Festival

canfest One of the biggest urban art events was organized by (the great) Banksy himself and took place in May 2008 (as The Cannes Film festival). The tunnel underneath the Waterloo station in London (Leak Street) was overcrowded for all three days of the festival. The urban art lovers could see their underground stars (Bsas Stencil from Buenos Aires, the founder of  Stencil Revolution - Prism, Logan Hicks and many more) in action.

Marching Band

ARTIST / BAND: Marching Band

SONG (MP3): Feel Good About IT

ALBUM: TBA

FILE UNDER: Indie / Pop

LABEL: U & L Records

INFO: Marching Band is an indie rock band based in Linköping, Sweden. In 2008, their first full-length album "Spark Large" was recorded and highlights the bands one of a kind indie pop sound. While the group does use the mainstay rock sounds of guitars, drums and bass guitar, they also employ an array of more eccentric musical instruments for a indie pop band, such as xylophone, marimba, banjo, vibraphone and unique vocal harmonies.

William F. Gibbs

ARTIST / BAND: William F. Gibbs

SONG (MP3)s: Operate" / Darling, You Were Beautiful Once"

ALBUM: My Fellow Sophisticates

FILE UNDER: Garage / Gospel / Gothic

LABEL: Old Man Records

INFO: Born in Troy, Alabama, William F Gibbs was first introduced to the guitar as a result of his mother cleaning out the attic.  Lying prone on the couch with a shattered leg, William was desperately looking for a way to pass the time.

Gibbs explains:  "I'm indebted to the guitar. It was my gateway drug to songwriting, arranging, singing, exploring and music at large. I started playing when I was 14, but for years we were strangers and had no real knowledge of each other. When I was 21 I became incredibly bored with playing so in order to resuscitate my love for it I denied myself the comforts of familiarity. I exchanged a pick for long fingernails, standard tunings for non-standard, and conventional chords for imaginary ones. Right around this time I started writing songs.  As far as influences on my guitar playing go here's a short list: Merle Travis, Jerry Reed, Chet Atkins, Scotty Moore, Joe Maphis, Danny Gatton, Jeff Buckley, Elliott Smith, Brian May, John Frusciante, John Fahey, and David Wilcox."

Since then, he has performed extensively in the southern states that surround his home of Greenville, South Carolina.

Bart Davenport

ARTIST / BAND: Bart Davenport

SONG (MP3): Miami Afternoon / Beg Steal Borrow

ALBUM: Bart Davenport

FILE UNDER: Pop / Folk Rock

LABEL: antenna farm records

INFO: Bart Davenport (AKA the Mayor of the East Bay) is a West Coast institution. The Berkeley native spent the late 80s fronting various mod-revival groups until putting together seminal Bay Area garage/blues act The Loved Ones. Touring relentlessly, the band developed a devoted Northern Soul fan base throughout the US and Europe (where they remain a jukebox favorite) before calling it quits in the mid 90s. Like so many before him, BD moved from garage blues to blue-eyed soul and formed the Kinetics, one of San Francisco’s most popular late-90s bands. 1000 silly magazine awards and broken venue attendance records later, Bart realized his songwriting could no longer be reigned in by devotion to any one boutique style, and the Kinetics were history.

Okay

ARTIST / BAND: Okay

SONG (MP3): My

ALBUM: Huggable Dust

FILE UNDER: Indie Folk

LABEL: Absolutley Kosher

INFO: Huggable Dust is a record about love. It’s not a single undying love but a decade’s worth of songs to different lovers, capturing the emotion at its most ephemeral as well as its most intense.

At first, Huggable Dust seems to be a break up record but it is much much more. It grows and blossoms and touches on so many aspects of the heart: longing, loss, obsession, disagreement, and resilience. As a society, we place great value on romantic, timeless love, going so far as to distinguish it as “true” love. But how many moments are just as poignant if fleeting? Do we feel the same things emotionally in those instants; on the precipices of something we have no idea is doomed? Do those little sparks of human contact, of intimate or infatuating connections make a collective impression on us that enriches our souls? Or is that spark just enough to create great art and great music?

Just as on his debut albums Low Road and High Road (both released in 2005 on Absolutely Kosher), Okay’s Marty Anderson writes and performs his songs with a uniquely kaleidoscopic approach of mixing repetition and variation. This is the language of pop music, of course, but Marty’s songs fold in on each other acrobatically in ways that aren’t always apparent on a single listen. Multi-layered and baroque, dense layers of technological and organic sounds fizzle under gentle pop melodies. Even in the simplest songs, where Marty is playing acoustic guitar, it comes back to a boil.

The lyrics are meditative and repetitive, a bit like mantras, deceptively simple, but like the music, prone to change when you’re not looking. In the song “Natural,” he slowly repeats "I want you" over and over and in the last repetition adds “to be happy". Is this a declaration of desire or resignation? The unique sound of Marty’s voice diverts your attention from just how clever he can be. Maybe that’s why it works so well.

Okay’s sound is transcendent, and their songs really connect with people. This isn’t just hype. The release of this album is the second-most asked about follow-up on the label (behind the Wrens). Low Road and High Road were sleeper hits of 2005, the best-selling release through direct mail order of that year. Several members of Get Him Eat Him, led by bassist Joe Posner, formed an eight piece band (billed as Joe and the Pony Express) and covered “Now.” Deerhoof counts Okay among their favorite bands and members can frequently be seen in the front row of his shows. Athens , GA band Venus is Sinking is recording an EP of Okay covers. Okay fans are among the most passionate we’ve ever encountered.

THE EPOCHS

ARTIST / BAND: THE EPOCHS

SONG (MP3): Giving Tree

FILE UNDER: Indie Pop

INFO: For brothers Ryan & Hays Holladay, the craft of songwriting has
always been closely linked with that of recording. From their
earliest days of musical collaboration in elementary school, they
employed computers and tape machines to not only document
their songs but to begin sculpting their sound. A sound that could
be called a distant relative to pop music. A sound that would later
become the musical foundation for The Epochs (pronounced ee-poks).

The two continued to write and record together after moving to New
York City. By 2000 they had amassed a sizable collection of recorded
material, some of which was included on a self released CD titled
'Ten Billion Light Years of Solitude'.

In Spring 2004, The Epochs, having expanded to include bassist
Kevin Smith and drummer Kotchy, began translating the recordings
into songs that could be played live. After performing multiple
residencies at such New York venues as the Knitting Factory and
Nublu, the band decided to relocate to Seattle. For over a year, they
called an abandoned 3-story building in downtown their home, out
of which they developed their live show and adjusted to recording
as a four-piece. Local radio station KEXP began playing the demos
they slid under their door which helped The Epochs develop a
following and attention from local press.

Since returning to Brooklyn in September of 2006, the band has
finished producing their self-titled debut. It is a big, varried
sounding record. Ranging from the bombastic electronics on
'Opposite Sides', to the seething orchestration and manipulated
guitar of 'Mouths to Feed', to the playful ryhthms of 'Giving Tree',
it never stops in one place musically long enough for it to be
pigeonholed into a category. And it is this restlessness that
gives the group its unique sound. However, a consistent thread
can be found amongst the genre exploration. The shared vocals
of Hays & Ryan, their lyrics and layered harmonies help give this
sonically eclectic work its continuity. The record was mixed by
Hays Holladay in the Spring of 2007 and is scheduled for release
later this year.

Pomegranates

ARTIST / BAND: Pomegranates

SONG (MP3): Thunder Meadow

ALBUM: Everything Is Alive

FILE UNDER: Pop / Surf / Shoegaze

LABEL: Lujo Records

INFO: Pomegranates began in the young minds of Jacob Merritt and Isaac Karns. With a mutual desire to make music, the two began penning songs. Immediately they felt this new project was heading places, so they solicited the help of Joey Cook, and the three got down to business. Their initial practice session gave shape to what would later become their first song, "Nursery Magic". Poms were official. June of 2007 saw the release of their well received debut EP 'Two Eyes'. Their full length, 'Everything is Alive', was released in May of 2008. Pomegranates continues to write music and share it with whoever lends an ear.

Bowerbirds

ARTIST / BAND: Bowerbirds

SONG (MP3): In Our Talons

ALBUM: Hymns For A Dark Horse

FILE UNDER: Acoustic / Americana /

LABEL: Dead Oceans

INFO: The members of Bowerbirds are "of the earth" in more ways than one. The group hails from rural North Carolina. Many of the songs on its recently released debut, Hymns for a Dark Horse (Burly Time), take as their subject matter things of this earth, and the destructive things humans do to them. And when the band plays live, as it did opening for John Vanderslice September 6 at Los Angeles's Troubadour, its music is very organic. That term can be too easily hurled around in our currently environmentally concerned culture, but with Bowerbirds, it fits.

SONG (MP3): Everyone Nose

ALBUM: Seeing Sounds

FILE UNDER: Alternative / Hip Hop / Rock

LABEL: Star Trak

INFO: "We didn't care about genres; we're not doing this for the money," Pharrell Williams said at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. "We're doing this for people who pledge allegiance to our movement." He said that his fans want to rock out and be taken on an emotional roller coaster, and the only way to do that is to give some full-on speaker-blasting records. Their sound this time around is not necessarily club music, but it's definitely European-influenced, layered and textured. "It's a big album of LSD, sonic drug," Chad Hugo stated.

Music Go Music

ARTIST / BAND: Music Go Music

SONG (MP3): Light Of Love

ALBUM: Light Of Love

FILE UNDER: Psycho Pop

LABEL: secretly canadian

INFO: Music Go Music have the simple syrup of pop extravagance running through their veins. These arena-sized songs are composed with such savage efficiency that you find yourself humming along before two bars have gone by. They are as assured and crafted as ABBA and ELO's best songs of '76, yet Music Go Music sounds fresh. They've exploded the formulas from the inside out, sounding like a hundred others and no one else. "Light of Love" is a true celebration of pop music's potential - laying a thin sheen of magic over the world around it, and making the tedious bits of the human experience a little less so.
