BEAR IN HEAVEN - BAG OF BAGS

ARTIST / BAND: BEAR IN HEAVEN
SONG (MP3): BAG OF BAGS
ALBUM: Red Bloom of the Boom
FILE UNDER: Psychedelic / Indie / Dub
LABEL: Eastern Developments

INFO: Generally speaking, the only way to keep an old model for music-making interesting is to continually change the existing structure so that it becomes something new while retaining the characteristics that define its identity. Pop music would have died long ago if it weren't for people who felt the need to resist and subvert dominant ideals in music rather than doom their music to a life of repetition and derivation. These are the kinds of thinkers who will be remembered 30 years from now and while the new EP from Bear in Heaven may not exactly be a potentially historical document, it's certainly worthy of as much praise as anyone might lavish upon it.

HAM1 - WHITE RAT

ARTIST / BAND: HAM1
SONG (MP3): WHITE RAT
ALBUM: The Captain's Table
FILE UNDER: Psychedelic / 2-step / Death Metal
LABEL: Orange Twin Records
INFO: A ringing attribute of Jim Willingham’s songwriting is that it manages to be both exuberant and high-minded -- inviting and literate -- all at once. Combining the terse acoustic propulsion of the late-model Feelies with the breezy, half-stoned-on-the-beach pop-ambiance of Dean Wareham’s Luna, Willingham nevertheless brings a distinctive Athenian warmth to his Captain’s Table. It figures: there are horn-charts and string-sections, burst veins of Link Wray-ish guitarplay, pastoral keyboard-drones, tremulous bits of Hawaiian slack-key guitar and some country-fried saunter up under the rhythm section.

MANATELLA - APOCALYPTIC OWL

ARTIST / BAND: MANATELLA
SONG (MP3): APOCALYPTIC OWL
ALBUM: Fashionable Neighborhood
FILE UNDER: Indie / Rock / Tropical

INFO: Manatella’s first full-length album, Fashionable Neighborhood, was recorded by producer Jeff Panall of Palliard at Husband Studios in Chicago in June 2007. A little bit softer than their previous releases, Fashionable Neighborhood, feels like "sharing a cold glass of beer" with your best friends. Songwriters Alissa Leonard and Lauren Chase each have distinct voices and songwriting styles and with some songs lyrically and vocally collaborative, the album is full of sweet surprises. Simple chord progressions and catchy licks drive most songs on the album and guest drummer Adam Cisney of Chicago band Grinner fills each song with charisma and skill.

MANCINO - FIVE BLADES

ARTIST / BAND: MANCINO
SONG (MP3): FIVE BLADES
ALBUM: Manners Matter
FILE UNDER: Indie / Pop / 2-step

INFO: From the depths of Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal, the trio mashes elements of 60’s pop, psyche, circus squawks, and solid rock music into a potent stew that possesses the shy wallflower to boogie and the dancing queen to strap on a pair of headphones and geek out.

THE WEAKERTHANS - NIGHT WINDOWS

ARTIST / BAND: THE WEAKERTHANS
SONG (MP3): NIGHT WINDOWS
ALBUM: Reunion Tour
FILE UNDER: Folk Rock
LABEL: Epitaph

INFO: The band was formed in 1997 in Winnipeg, Manitoba by John K. Samson, after he left the punk band Propagandhi to start a publishing company. Samson joined forces with bassist John P. Sutton and drummer Jason Tait, and created The Weakerthans as a vehicle for a more melodic and introspective brand of songwriting than that of Propagandhi. The band's name originates in a line from the 1992 film The Lover: "Go ahead, I'm weaker than you can possibly imagine."[5]

We are very pleased to meet you. We are Mostly Bears.Love.

BALD EAGLE - THOSE ARE COBRAS, MAN

ARTIST / BAND: BALD EAGLE
SONG (MP3): THOSE ARE COBRAS, MAN
ALBUM: Hot Shoulders
FILE UNDER: Rock

LABEL: Emergency Umbrella RecordsINFO: "Think fuzzed out bass guitar, sloppy drums, high-energy guitar antics and all the '70s rock influences you can possibly muster up in 30 seconds (AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, The Who) then remove the classy vocals and add some grating rawk-star lungs and you've got Bald Eagle."

PASH - THE BEST GUN

ARTIST / BAND: PASH
SONG (MP3): THE BEST GUN
ALBUM: The Best Gun
FILE UNDER: Indie
LABEL: http://www.exoticfever.com/

INFO: I’ve been reading that their live show is not to be missed, and they sound to me like the type of band who’s stuff really translates well to a live show, lots of fun, dance-y energy. The kind where you worry that the lights hanging from the ceiling may become dislodged due to the fact that everyone is jumping around so much. Scary, but in a fun way. Like rollercoasters. Or watching a zombie movie

THE COATHANGERS - SHUT THE FUCK UP

ARTIST / BAND: THE COATHANGERS
SONG (MP3): SHUT THE FUCK UP
ALBUM: The Coathangers
FILE UNDER: Experimental / Rock / Rock
LABEL: Rob's House Records

INFO: It all began in that dimmly lit back ally in the summer of 2006. It was there that four ladies of leisure, bound by circumstance, joined forces to disorganize rock and/or roll. Forged from the blood of aborted fetuses and risen from the ashes of blunt roaches...Coathangers will devour your immortal soul. Who's in? You?? If you said no, fuck your dad...your mom's alright.

THE MABUSES - MIRTH

ARTIST / BAND: THE MABUSES
SONG (MP3): MIRTH
ALBUM: Mabused
FILE UNDER: Pop / Indie / New Wave

INFO: The Mabuses is a band which formed in London in 1991 and released two albums to considerable critical acclaim. Led by the enigmatic Kim Fahy, the Mabuses offer music which mixes pop sensibilities with more esoteric concerns such as film and literature. The name "Mabuses" is a tribute to the Fritz Lang film trilogy about a master criminal called Dr. Mabuse. The sheer profusion of influences in their work made The Mabuses impossible to categorize. Lyrically and musically, the result of their output can only be best described as modern psychedelia.
