KARMA

ARTIST / BAND: KARMA
SONG (MP3): SHORELINE DRIVE
FILE UNDER: Nu-Jazz / Electronica / Freestyle
LABEL: Compost Records
INFO: Karma began exploring Jazz aesthetics with club music on their 1993 track High Priestess (written by Robert Nacken), which quickly gained cult status amongst the more discerning DJs and was played and charted by Francois K, Dimitri from Paris and David Mancuso. They were bootlegged on the Loft Classics series, sampled by acts like Detroits Three Chairs (Moodyman and Theo Parrish), toured Japan and, after three longplayers, kept themselves busy in the last few years with various movie soundtrack works and providing the theme music for acclaimed German ZDF TV show '37°'.

APOSTLE OF HUSTLE

ARTIST / BAND: APOSTLE OF HUSTLE
SONG (MP3): CHEAP LIKE SEBASTIAN!
ALBUM: National Anthem of Nowhere
FILE UNDER: Indie / Tropical / Folk Rock
LABEL: http://www.arts-crafts.ca/
INFO: The band is more or less the brainchild of Andrew Whiteman, who has been in such groups as Bourbon Tabernacle Choir and Que Vida. He released a solo effort titled Fear of Zen in 1995. He is also the lead guitarist for the indie supergroup Broken Social Scene of Toronto. Whiteman returned to his native Toronto to resume writing and recording with Broken Social Scene after a two-month stay with his godmother's family in Cuba. He learned to play the tres, a Cuban guitar, during that time. But in the midst of making the Juno Award-winning You Forgot It in People, Whiteman couldn't escape the Spanish musical flavors of his time spent in El Barrio Santo Suarez.
In order to make his fascination come to life, two of his fellow bandmates, Julian Brown and Daniel Stone, joined Whiteman for what would become the cinematic, Latin-tinged portrait of Apostle of Hustle. Folkloric Feel was released on Arts & Crafts in late summer 2004. The follow-up to Folkloric Feel is National Anthem of Nowhere, released in Canada on February 6, 2007.

BRACKEN

ARTIST / BAND: BRACKEN
SONG (MP3): HEATHENS
ALBUM: Braken
FILE UNDER: Experimental / Other / Comedy
LABEL: anticon. records
INFO: Bracken is a musical project spinning in a loose and ill-defined orbit around founder member Chris Adams. In another life, Chris, along with his brother Richard are known as co-captains of the good ship Hood. In this latest incarnation we see a side-step/stumble into a puzzling soundworld of future pop, analogue tape trickery, avant drone, loose dub flourishes, hip hop pacing and clattering drums. Anticon are proud to welcome Bracken to the fold.Chris' formative years came with all the right accoutrements of youth: small town boredom, a four track, a walkman, and long, aimless walks in the countryside. read more from the source...

IAN LOVE

ARTIST / BAND: IAN LOVE
SONG (MP3): THE ONLY NIGHT
ALBUM:
FILE UNDER: Indie / Acoustic / Other
LABEL: Limekiln Records
INFO:Ian Love was born and raised in New York City, where he got his first guitar at the age of 11. By his early teens, he was playing in a punk/hardcore band called Burn while attending the prestigious High School of Performing Arts. After a little over a year there, he quit school to go on tour, ending his formal education. From the ages of 17 to 23, he was addicted to heroin, which dominated his life although he also played in bands, notably handling bass guitar for the noise-rock group Die 116. At 23, he went into rehab and kicked his habit. He began handling live sound for the club Brownies in New York and resumed his career as a musician, eventually joining the band Rival Schools, which toured internationally and released an album, United by Fate, on Island Records in 2001. In between tours, he formed Cardia, which became his main focus and with which he recorded a self-titled album released on Silverthree Records in 2003. He also began working as an engineer for other recording artists. Eventually, he began writing songs that didn't fit into any of his band projects, which hatched the idea for a solo album. Playing most of the instruments himself, he recorded Ian Love, released by the Philadelphia-based independent label Limekiln Records in February 2006. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

OX

ARTIST / BAND: OX
SONG (MP3): CAROLINAH
ALBUM: Dust Bowl Revival
FILE UNDER: Indie / Alternative / Folk
LABEL: www.weewerk.com
INFO: As soon as we hear Mark Browning’s drawling vocals creak on the opening song “Miss Idaho” we instantly know that Ox has delivered an album of stature. Dope-soaked, derelict and wired, “American Lo Fi” features 11 songs that give a nod to Velvet Underground meets Bruce Springsteen, trading New Jersey urban fairground for Pacific interstate moonscape. Ox's long awaited follow up to the seminal alt-country, indie hybrid classic, 'Dust Bowl Revival', fuses weary with vicious, punk with hillbilly, the farmer in the city with the electro-magnetic aura of tape hiss and amp crackle. ”American Lo Fi” was recorded in the manic confines of Vancouver's Profile Studios (aka Upstairs Sound Laboratory) amid the plume of smoke, sweat and heavy Pacific laced air. Ox began in Vancouver amid sessions for a Mark Browning solo record titled, 'Harvester'. The record went wrong... crossed between Neil Young's Reactor and a Journey record... and was scrapped. read more from the source...

THE GO FIND

ARTIST / BAND: THE GO FIND
SONG (MP3): DICTIONARY
ALBUM: Miami
FILE UNDER: Indie / Pop / Electronica
LABEL: Morr Music.
INFO: It's altogether too easy to release an album these days. Grab your iBook, spend an afternoon looping tracks, and there you go, right? Sure -- unless we're talking about putting out an album that people will actually buy. That'll require a bit more work.
Miami is much more than an afternoon of work, but can't shed that fatal "laptop project" odor. The laptop loner badge might not be so damning if The Go Find, which is really the undertaking of a guy named Dieter Sermeus, didn't just miss the mark in crafting memorable and interesting music. "Summer Guest", for example, is a keyboard-heavy anthem along the lines of Gary Numan's "Cars" -- it could stick in your head for decades, but it just... doesn't. Somehow, even after several listens, the hook remains elusive (although the near-pornographic whispered/sung refrain, "Oh, all that I want is to make you cum", would do well to be a lot easier to forget.). And the fatal part? "Summer Guest" is Miami's best song.
The rest of Miami isn't disagreeable; it's like a cocktail party where no one is talking and everyone wants to be somewhere else, but where the hors d'oeuvres are marvelous. Too many times, just as a song reaches the point of being truly interesting, it fades -- it backs down when it should kick off. "City Dreamer" and "What I Want", for example, are electronic lullabies whose steady metronome beats could certainly lull listeners to sleep. The lyrics don't exactly set the gray matter afire, either: we hear "Hey, I'm watching the city tonight, hold on", in "City Dreamer", at least five times too many, and the problem persists throughout the disc. As for the danceable songs, such as "Bleeding Heart", well... they might get you bobbing your head, but probably not shaking your booty. It's a shame that Miami can't rise above its digital roots and embrace the groove it occasionally toys with.

LOVEDRUG

ARTIST / BAND: LOVEDRUG
SONG (MP3): PUSHING THE SHINE
ALBUM: Everything Starts Where it Ends
FILE UNDER: Rock / Indie
LABEL: The Militia Group

INFO:
Like many great bands, there is something hauntingly spiritual and honest about Lovedrug. The Ohio-based rock band delivers a highbrow sound akin to Spiritualized, Sunny Day Real Estate, or Muse, crossed with the arena grandeur of Queen. A unique crossbreed of art and accessibility, powerful melodies are driven by smartly crafted lyrics of truth, intrigue, love, spite, death and damn near everything in between. Only those who have seen the band live can truly understand the growing phenomenon that is Lovedrug. Regardless of how clich? it may sound, Lovedrug live is truly less a show and more an experience. In playing to a variety of audiences (the band has shared the stage w/ The Killers, Robert Plant, Switchfoot, Sam Phillips, Creeper Lagoon, Eisley, Something Corporate, and Matchbook Romance, to name a few), Lovedrug have won over virtually every audience they?ve met.

THE COMAS

ARTIST / BAND: THE COMAS
SONG (MP3): RED MICROPHONES
ALBUM: Spells
FILE UNDER: Rock / Indie / Psychedelic
LABEL: Vagrant Records
INFO: Maybe it was the citrus-flavored liqueur or the enchanted trees of the Catskills. Maybe it was the bald eagle, or the snow. Maybe it was falling in and out of love and coming out of it alive, or maybe it was just that old mansion.
Regardless, Spells has a pulse.

SONG (MP3): DIAMOND RING
ALBUM: Let's Just Be
FILE UNDER: Rock

His 5th studio album, Nuclear Daydream is his strongest, most tunefully brilliant set to date. MINK

ARTIST / BAND: MINK
SONG (MP3): TALK TO ME
ALBUM: Talk to Me
FILE UNDER: Rock / Powerpop / Psychedelic
INFO: The band has clearly hit the ground running. Formed just a blink ago in Spring 2006, MINK has already written more than 60 songs (30 of them in one intense three-week stretch), recorded its debut album in just four weeks (with noted producer Sylvia Massy of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Tool fame), shot one of the most fun videos of recent times for its infectious song "Talk to Me" with director Christian Lamb (Madonna, Korn, Kelly Clarkson, Incubus Madonna), had another song "Pressure Pressure" featured nightly in ESPN's 2006 Major League baseball playoffs coverage and has established itself as one of the most exciting new live acts on the scene both in its own club shows and opening big-venue concerts by Angels & Airwaves among others. And all that while going back and forth between New York (from where Carlson hails) and Australia (home to drummer Mozgawa, lead guitarist Nick Maybury, rhythm guitarist David Lowy and bassist Grant Fitzpatrick).

SONG (MP3): CINDY
ALBUM: Ola Podrida
FILE UNDER: Indie / Folk
LABEL: Grand Hotel van Cleef

INFO: Ola Podrida began as a home-recording project for film composer David Wingo (GEORGE WASHINGTON, ALL THE REAL GIRLS, THE GUATEMALAN HANDSHAKE), who began writing and recording a batch of songs soon after moving back to Austin from New York at the beginning of 2005. Upon completion of the recordings, he started performing the songs live with old friends Robert Patton and Matthew Frank, both of whom moved back to Brooklyn with Wingo in the fall of 2006, where they are now also playing with two other old Texas friends, Andrew Kenny (AMERICAN ANALOG SET) and Johnny Christ. Ola Podrida's self-titled debut album is being released by the label Plug Research in the spring of 2007..................."David Wingo's songs at first seem modest and merely warm - lullabyes, irons & wines. But what I've found is that the songs are hot. Behind all that lull is organ churn, guitar resound, sharp want and skin-on-skin... read more from the source...

RICHARD REAGH FEAT. EL PERRO DEL MAR

RICHARD REAGH FEAT. EL PERRO DEL MAR
SONG (MP3): HANGIN' ON A LIMB
ALBUM: "Is This The Blues I'm Singing?"
FILE UNDER: Electronica / Pop / R&B
INFO: Canadian-born Swedish resident Richard Reagh’s music divides itself into two layers: at the bottom you’ll find a balanced blend of crackles, tinkles, squeaks, techno drums and trumpets with the vocals floating around over top. His melancholy talking and singing sounds like a choirboy almost stuttering his words making the whole thing sound like the British sample-o-phonics, The Go! Team.
In the music, there’s embedded textual and sound references, like the line, “I live on the second floor” from Suzanne Vega’s “Luka”. Or “Ring my Bell” with Anita Ward’s voice mixed together with a piece from an American gangster movie; or something like that.
Sometimes chirping birds, sometimes Limahl; sometimes REM and falsetto singing with Montt Mardié. It’s perfect game for a boring party: who can find the most unexpected ingredients at this smorgasbord’s of sounds?

TOBIAS HELLKVIST

ARTIST / BAND: TOBIAS HELLKVIST
SONG (MP3): STEP ASIDE (EFTERKLANG COVER)
ALBUM: unreleased
FILE UNDER: Electronica / Ambient / Acoustic
LABEL: Unsigned
INFO: Tobias Hellkvist is a Swedish singer/songwriter/guitarist who came to me by way of Efterklang, whose sweetly melancholy “Step Aside” Hellkvist treats with great charity on his own cover. His winsome yet penetrating vocals might remind you of Iron & Wine, as will his gentle acoustic melodies. Likewise his instrumental tracks hang in the air like autumn leaves. Sorry, MySpace seems to have made it next to impossible (at least to my limited abilities) to directly link to their MP3s anymore, but after downloading “Step Aside,” head to Hellkvist’s MySpace page and give your day an extra dozen minutes of sublime reflection. the source...
