MP3: Vrgn Evl

ALBUM: Oxford Basement Collection

FILE UNDER: Indie, Folk, Psychedelic

LABEL: Esperanza Plantation

INFO: It’s time! We’re kicking off our 2011 release schedule with a record several years in the making. May 10th will see the debut release of El Obo, the solo side-project of Colour Revolt frontman Jesse Coppenbarger. Grimes

Grimes: "Vanessa"

ARTIST / BAND: Grimes

MP3: Vanessa

ALBUM: Darkbloom EP

FILE UNDER: Avant Pop

LABEL: Arbutus Records/Hippos in Tanks

INFO:

Grimes is weird pop influenced by styles such as R&B, Industrial, goth, hip hop and Western medieval organum. She is noted for simple but strong percussion, vocal virtuosity, and addictive melodies. Despite having little acquaintance with music before the age of 18, Grimes (born 1988) has overcome this barrier and used it to her advantage, exploding onto the music scene with a sound that is that is far different from that of her peers, and extremely broad in it’s references (Mariah Carey, Salem, Cocteau Twins, Gang Gang Dance, The Smiths, Prince). And yet, while all Grimes songs are different and genre-bending, there is a strong sound that is fully her own, characterized primarily by her chameleonlike voice.
She cannot read music and has no understanding of theory or notation, so her attempts to imitate often fail. Rather, the result is particularly unique, strangely beautiful, sometimes scary, frequently melancholic and catchy as hell.

Thao & Mirah

The indie-folk duo of Thao Nguyen and Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn complement each other perfectly while delving into new territory on their self-titled album together.

ARTIST / BAND: Thao & Mirah

Download: “Eleven” from Thao & Mirah via Pitchfork

Download: “How Dare You” via Kill Rock Stars

Listen: NPR First Listen Exclusive Album Stream

FILE UNDER: Indie

LABEL: Kill Rock Stars

INFO: With most collaborations come a push and pull between what each artist brings to the table. The most successful musical partnerships use those differences, and occasionally opposition, to force each musician out of a comfort zone and create something new that neither would have come up with by his or herself. That's certainly the case with Thao & Mirah, a new record from Thao Nguyen and Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn that finds a lot of common ground between the indie-folk singer-songwriters, while also delving into new territory for both.

Henry Clay People

Broken Ross, Andy, Les Josh, and JoeyPhoto Charlie Chu

ARTIST / BAND: Henry Clay People

MP3: California Wildfire

ALBUM: This Is A Desert EP

FILE UNDER: Classic Rock / Indie / Rock

LABEL: TBD Records

INFO:

Fresh off the full length release of “Somewhere On The Golden Coast” and months of touring with The Drive By Truckers, Against Me, and The Silversun Pickups, The Henry Clay People wasted no time diving back into the recording studio and surfacing with “This Is A Desert”, a five track EP to be released in May on TBD.  “This Is A Desert” is a collection of the familiar and a daring exploration of the new.
On the opening track “The Honey Love He Sells” The HC Peeps show off their punky side, like an early Replacementsesque kick in the teeth. On the other end of the spectrum the track "The Winter Song” displays a fresh, dense, and relatively bizarre production of what would otherwise be a straight ahead slacker ballad, kicking off with a doozy of an opening line:
"If you're feeling lost then maybe we'll get found...we'll kill some time watching cars drive by...we'll make some messes just to clean up...drink our faces numb or maybe fall in love for the first time since the last time..."
Zeroed in on this earnest spunk, we find The Henry Clay People writing their most mature music yet.  “This Is A Desert” acts as both an addition to The Henry Clay People’s already impressive discography and acts a an audible evolution of their approach to indie rock and roll.

Mount Moriah

ARTIST / BAND: Mount Moriah
MP3: "Lament"
ALBUM: Mount Moriah
FILE UNDER: Americana / Classic Rock / Folk
LABEL: Holidays for Quince Records
INFO: Heather McEntire (of post-punk veterans Bellafea) and Jenks Miller (of heavy-psych/metal outfit Horseback) met in 2005, while working at a record store in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  After collaborating as Un Deux Trois on the stripped-down, pop-inflected Lovers EP (2007), they established Mount Moriah as an outlet for their mutual interest in classic American folk and rock music.  Mount Moriah’s 2010 EP, The Letting Go, highlighted the band’s thematic range, moving from delicate acoustic narratives to a dark, fuzzed-out, soulful stomper in just three tracks.  Mount Moriah’s long-awaited, self-titled debut -- featuring guest instrumentation by members of St. Vincent, Megafaun, and many other North Carolina-based musicians -- is cut from the same cloth, offering a far-reaching and non-traditional take on classic folk themes like devotion, tribulation, redemption, and an indelible sense of place.

ALBUM: The Postcard EP

FILE UNDER: Powerpop / Rock / Zouk

Music is the only thing keeping the members of The Extraordinaires alive. Going on tour not only allows them to try new fast foods, it is a good cover for their ongoing search for the Holy Grail. "Writing a song is easy", says Jay Purdy, "I usually take care of it in the bathroom."

Between their naturally high IQ's and there onstage antics, the Extraordinaires always pack a punch! available for bar mitzvahs!

Aside from theater, film, and visual art they play music. "We would describe our music by saying "swoosh", or with a picture of Shaq slamming a dunk." says Matt.

Nat Baldwin's

ARTIST / BAND: Nat Baldwin

MP3: "Weights"

ALBUM: People Changes

FILE UNDER: Free jazz /Experimental / Minimalist

LABEL: Western Vinyl

INFO:

Double bassist/singer-songwriter Nat Baldwin’s forthcoming album People Changes, out May 24 on Western Vinyl, is much like the stark Maine setting which it was created. Of course, his fourth full-length shows welcome markings of his experimental bent from years as the Dirty Projectors bassist and former disciple of free jazz legend Anthony Braxton, but the serene isolation of 17 million acres of New England forestland make this cabin-born set intimate and sincere. The album follows A Split EP with Extra Life (2008, Shatter Your Leaves) on which earlier versions of “Weights” and “Lifted” appear,Most Valuable Player (2008), Enter the Winter (2006) and Lights Out EP (2005) on Broken Sparrow Records, and his experimental free jazz debut Solo Contrabass (2003, Peacock Recordings). In addition to Dirty Projectors, Nat Baldwin has performed on Vampire Weekend’s Contra andDepartment of Eagles' In Ear Park. He will tour behind the album’s release this spring.

Country Mice

ARTIST / BAND: Country Mice

Download: Festival

ALBUM: Twister

FILE UNDER: Garage / Psychedelic

LABEL: Wao Wao Records

INFO:

What does Country Mice front-man Jason Rueger have in common with less than 300 people in the US?  Growing up in Beattie, that’s ruralest of rural Kansas. On a farm of course, that was passed down through three generations of his family and old enough to be on the Pony Express route. “Family, friends, and working the land gave us a good wholesome life”.

Walking dirt road paths, working and living off the land, squinting his eyes at the sun, but with headphones on, it is not the bucolic atmosphere but music that most inspires him.  At an early age, Rueger sets his sights for something different than the surrounding dirt and milo that stung his eyes and cut his hands.

Breaking away from the close-knit ties of friends and family, Rueger moves east, not to Nashville, where you might expect a country boy to venture, but to Brooklyn.  It doesn’t take long to hook up with fellow Midwest transplants Ben Bullington (guitar) and Kurt Kuehn (drums) as they all quickly band together, finding comfort in their shared sense of displacement.  Eventually, as the trio becomes more assimilated to their new surroundings, they recruit upstate New Yorker Mike Feldman (bass).

As Country Mice, they rally together to craft apocalyptic ballads through amplifier hazes that thicken into funnel clouds, drums that stomp-clap sedately before the storm peaks, and bass tones that thicken the bloodstream. Rueger draws on his small town rearing with sophistication beyond the ordinarily romantic and reductive Americana troubadour, and his songwriting is anything but dime a dozen.

Strong traces of Neil Young and Wilco are mixed into modern experimental guitar sounds that any fan of mid-90’sSonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. will love. Living and gigging in Brooklyn, Country Mice begin to fully develop their sound, which becomes by influenced the other hardworking bands of Brooklyn's fast-paced scene. With the release of two 7” singles and a limited edition cassette on Brooklyn-based indie labels, Country Mice embarked on several national US tours, recorded and recently released a Daytrotter Session, played CMJ and is heading to and touring around SXSW.

For the spring, they will unleash a new single “Festival” on March 28 and their debut album Twister on June 7th, a record that sonically chisels through the calloused shell of glossy rock & roll to find the dissonant live wire beneath and play it for all its worth. It tells a tale of strained memory: the hardships, joys, and love of growing up in a small town in the Midwest, with the hopes and dreams of traveling the world – a record for every kid seeing the big world from his small bedroom window.

ALBUM: Bellow

FILE UNDER: Soul / Trip Hop / Visual

LABEL: Manimal Vinyl.

INFO: Something small and quiet at first, Sister Crayon began with vocalist Terra Lopez playing classical guitar and pre-programmed beats on a loop pedal to attentive house crowds. With the addition of members Dani Fernandez (MPC 1000 and Microkorg), Genaro Ulloa (Keyboards and Synths) and Nicholas Suhr (Drums and Percussion), Sister Crayon has emerged as a four-piece whose emotional live performances along with their styles of ambience, hip-hop, and “hysterical” have created a stir with their upcoming EP release, “Enter Into Holy (or)ders”. Inspired by the late French writer Jean Genet, “Holy (or)ders” is a sexual lament and sigh to the popular criminal.

ARTIST / BAND: New Jared Mees & the Grown Children

MP3:"Hungry Like a Tiger "Limber Hearts"

ALBUM: ONLY GOOD THOUGHTS CAN STAY

FILE UNDER: folk rock, indie, soul

LABEL: Tender Loving Empire

INFO: Despite its title, Only Good Thoughts Can Stay is not an anthem for blind faith in simple pleasures. Pairing sometimes dark lyrical matter with uptempo major-chord progressions, the newest album from Portland, Oregon’s Jared Mees and the Grown Children examines the give-and-take inherent in struggles for self-fulfillment while walking a tightrope between naive exuberance and cynical skepticism. This balancing act results in a sound that is joyful yet introspective; a rollicking Americana tale of modern life, be it hellish or heavenly.

Gypsy Treasures

Gypsy Treasures: "Stray Dogs of Wroclaw"

ARTIST / BAND: Gypsy Treasures

MP3: "Stray Dogs of Wroclaw"

ALBUM: Buried Goods

FILE UNDER: electronic, alternative, exotic

LABEL: Not Not Fun

INFO: Gypsy Treasures is a project from Aria Jalali (aka Railcars), his release on Not Not Fun "Buried Goods" is the sole document of his mid-2000s basement raga project in which blown-out faux-modal guitar lines snake and coil under a cavernous reverb chamber while bizarre bunker electronics whirr and oscillate in an opiated haze on a bed of zoned tambo & hand percussion. "Buried Goods" sounds like a lost Sublime Frequencies demo as played by a bunch of So-Cal teens obsessed with German Oak.  Completely awesome and wholly apart from whatever else is/was going on, scene-wise when it was recorded.

The title "Buried Goods" refers to the accidental rediscovery of these tracks by Jalali on a recent Railcars tour in Europe. When pressed for more material to play for various encores, he found forgotten 6-7 year loops on his boss pedal which they improvised upon. Realizing that these 'jams' were worth revisiting, it inspired the collection to be re-recorded and mastered.  All four tracks were 4-tracked (the exception being “Four Horsemen,” which was recorded live) with various guest personnel and inner-chemical agendas. Being lifelong fans of contextless cassette curveballs, "Buried Goods" appealed to Not Not Fun instantly who have now released it a limited pro-dubbed tapes in cases with pitch-shifted regal furniture art/design by video-maker du jour, Megazord.

FILE UNDER: Experimental / Pop

LABEL: Partisan

INFO: A band and multi media duo based in Brooklyn, NY - Paul Duncan and Oliver Chapoy.

Paul Duncan is currently recording and performing under the moniker Warm Ghost. It finds him taking a step beyond traditional instrumentation and one toward that of electronics, synthesizers, drum machines and processed field recordings.

Warm Ghost has now evolved into a band in collaboration with Oliver Chapoy, where the sound is an intricately arranged shimmering sonic world of twisting words and melodies inside dense environments where there are elements of 80′s new wave, cold wave and synth pop from Solid Space to OMD to Depeche Mode, late 70′s disco, synth programming sharing ground with Autechre and AFX, and experimental textures reminiscent of Fennesz. The payoff is beautifully executed, lush pop songs that beg for repeat listening.

INFO: Lori Scacco and Eva Puyuelo first met through mutual friend and collaborator Guillermo Scott Herren when Lori was asked to tour as part of the Savath & Savalas live band. Years later as Lori was writing new solo material and Eva was in New York recording with Savath & Savalas, she invited Eva to join her on one song for her new record which, at the time, was intended to be mostly instrumental. They soon discovered that they had a deep-rooted creative connection and a shared love of 70’s psych-folk one-offs, so they made a plan to bring Eva back to the states in the coming months to begin work on a full-length. Lay Your Sea Coat Aside is the result of 5 weeks spent sequestered in New York City, immersed in a wholly collaborative exchange.
