The Safes

ARTIST / BAND: The Safes
SONG (MP3): Phone Book Full of Phonies
ALBUM: Well Well Well
FILE UNDER: Rock / Powerpop / Soul
LABEL: O'Brothers' Records
INFO: The Safes are the O'Malley brothers, Frankie, Michael, and Patrick. Growing up, these sons of Irish immigrants were surrounded by music. Their father Frank O'Malley, a working musician, record collector and all-around music lover, filled the house with live sounds, great records, and an array of musical instruments. His boys developed a similar love; if it had energy, conviction, and a killer hook, the O'Malleys could dig it. read more from the source...

Je Suis France

Artist / Band: Je Suis France
Song (MP3): That Don't Work That Well For Us
Album: Afrikan Majik
File Under: Indie Pop
Label: http://www.antennafarmrecords.com
Info: Je Suis France, a nine-piece, spread-across-the-country indie rock behemoth plans to release its latest and greatest LP, Afrikan Majik, on May 29th on Antenna Farm Records (the Donkeys, Still Flyin’). Based in Athens, Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, and featuring members of Masters of the Hemisphere, Still Flyin’, the Mendoza Line, the Low Lows, Je Suis France was an Athens fixture before dispersing to various parts of the country, resulting in, strangely enough, the band’s most fertile period (10+ EPs!). Afrikan Majik finds the band at its most explorative, tapping into krautrock jams, indiepop, and even reggae with an inspired fervor.

CENTRAL SERVICES

Artist / Band: CENTRAL SERVICES
Song (MP3): 4 LETTER WORD
Album: Central Services
File Under: Pop / Powerpop / Indie
Info:
Seattle's Central Services is no stranger to the radio. In fact, with hardly any promo or outside push, the band managed to secure a 'Featured Artist' spot on NPR, not to mention being a KEXP favorite (7 out of 10 tracks on the latest release saw airplay). Central Services is a radio-ready act that maintains an indie hipness like Portastatic or Nada Surf. The pop-catchiness doesn't feel like a guilty pleasure, mostly because the music is so damn good. Melodies are a-plenty, and coupled with sweet vocals that recall younger days, crushes, and innocence. The band also shines on acoustic numbers with a 70's era melodic-focused simplicity. Central Services delivers genuine and genius tracks that remain with listeners indefinitely. Get onboard now-- this band is the next big thing.

Since being signed to Sony's Epic Records in 2000, the band has attained significant popular success. Elements of Modest Mouse's sound have been likened to or have been inspired by those of Elliott Smith, Pixies, Built to Spill, and numerous other alternative rock bands.

Voxtrot

Artist / Band: Voxtrot
Song (MP3): Kid Gloves
Album: Voxtrot
File Under: Pop / Indie / Rock
Label: Playlouder / Beggars Group
Info: The Austin, Texas-based 5-piece of Ramesh Srivastava (vocals, guitar, electric piano), Jason Chronis (bass), Mitchell Calvert (guitar), Matt Simon (drums), and Jared Van Fleet (keyboards) has caused quite a stir over the last several months with their two self-released EPs. Jim Gottlieb, co-founder of Playlouder said, “We were instant fans of Voxtrot after hearing the 'Raised By Wolves' EP and when the 'Mothers, Sisters, Daughters & Wives' EP came along it blew us away. We witnessed how good their SXSW shows were and when we saw them at New York’s Mercury Lounge, that was it!"Originally conceived as an outlet for vocalist Ramesh Srivastava to record a handful of songs he had written, it quickly became apparent that Voxtrot needed to be something more. The band will head into the studio this fall to record a full-length debut, which is tentatively scheduled for release in early 2007.

Dan Deacon

Artist / Band: Dan Deacon
Song (MP3): The Crystal Cat
Album: Spiderman of the rings
File Under: Indie pop / Electronica
Label: Carpark Records
Info: Standing in a Greyhound Bus station, wearing a Sylvester t-shirt and huge duct-tape-covered glasses, Baltimore ’s Dan Deacon doesn't invoke the image of a composer to the other bus riders. The two suitcases he loads under the bus, which accompany him from city to city, hold the sweat-and-grime-soaked electronics that he uses to craft his raging, maxed-out party music and light show. After 12 tours and 300+ shows in little over 2 years, the gear is beaten and battered, but the show and the energy it produces is anything but.

Girl Talk

Artist / Band: Girl Talk
Song (MP3): Pure magic
Album: Bone Hard Zaggin'
File Under: Samplin Pop
Label: 333 recordings
Info: A little something from last year that got overlooked amongst all the Night Ripper commotion, this 7" offering from mashup artist Gregg Gillis is a surprising departure into freak-folk that uses Appalachian harmonies to-- no, actually it's more spastic cut-up pop-rap-bounce-club-laptop business. By now you're probably in one of two camps when it comes to Girl Talk: either he's a sub-Diplo wigster who makes Real Street Music palatable to girl-jeans anglehairs by spoonfeeding it to 'em alongside a bunch of potential-punchline 80s pop debris, or he's a brilliant pop encyclopedia who hears sonic connections everywhere and does everything short of drilling a hole in his skull to let those ideas play off each other. (Can he be both? Only if you both love and hate irreverence in equal measure.)

DATAROCK

Artist / Band: DATAROCK
Song (MP3): Fa-Fa-Fa
Album: Datarock Datarock
File Under: Other / Pop / Classic Rock
Label: Young Aspiring Professionals
Info:
Turn of the century in Norway and two friends, Fredrik Saroea and Ket-Ill, have noticed how the musical landscape of their home city, Bergen, has changed. No longer are the truly alternative sounds flooding out from rock venues like they had been in the nineties. It's in the clubs that they're hearing the most inspiring songs and meeting the most interesting people. The Röyksopp guys become friends, as do the Kings of Convenience and pop starlet Annie. Fredrik and Ket-Ill like all the music they're making, as well as the electroclash tunes DJs are beginning to play. They were in the middle of a huge musical stew, and it was from there that their own band, Datarock, first sprang to life.People like Röyksopp had been making electronic pop under different names on their laptops since the mid-nineties.

Album: Our Earthly Pleasures
File Under: Rock / Pop
Label: Warp
Info: A seeming pep talk for hedonism, "Your Urge," the latest track off Maximo Park's upcoming Our Earthly Pleasures (out May 8 via Warp), is rife with mentions of drunken stumbles and quivering ooohs. "You don't have to deny your urge / It doesn't make you bad," nervy frontman Paul Smith coos during the song's opening seconds.

JANA HUNTER - BABIES

Artist / Band: JANA HUNTER
Song (MP3): BABIES
Album: there's no home
File Under: Folk / Experimental
Label: http://www.gnomonsong.com/

Info: In 1994, Jana Hunter was a 16 and a violinist in the Greater Youth Orchestra of Fort Worth (Texas.) This quickly and naturally led to smoking cigarettes, hanging out in a VW Van and joining local hippie band McGillicutty. Hilariously, this group soon disbanded due to creative differences, and Hunter began in earnest the pursuit of solo writing, performing at local open mics and house parties.

DAVID KARSTEN DANIELS - THE DREAM BEFORE THE RING THAT WOKE ME

Artist / Band: DAVID KARSTEN DANIELS
Song (MP3): THE DREAM BEFORE THE RING THAT WOKE ME
Album: Sharp Teeth
File Under: Folk / Other
Label: fat-cat.co.uk

Info: After three albums recorded piecemeal on fourtracks and computers in three states and on two continents, DKD finally sat still in an old farmhouse and spent two years recording his fourth record. The result is the new album, Sharp Teeth, a potent discovery of moral ambiguity and unavoidable human disconnect that suggests some sort of modern American folk music in the Southern tradition - deathly slow like life in the South, haunted by religion but unable to find answers in its Bible. The sounds of the South are there as well - nods to Dixieland jazz, Nashville's slide guitars, molasses choirs of drums, horns, and voices, and massive whirring string orchestras that recall swarms of chittering insects. The recording is 19 persons strong and was mixed by Alex Lazara (the Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers); Daniel Hart (the Physics of Meaning, the Polyphonic Spree) created giant string orchestras, one track at a time. DKD is traveling North America this spring with good friends John Ribo and Sara Morris. Look for them in Europe early summertime.

RADICAL FACE - GLORY

Artist / Band: RADICAL FACE
Song (MP3): GLORY
Album: Ghost
File Under: Indie / Folk / Experimental
Label: Morr Music

Info: This record started with a simple idea: What if houses had memories? What if, when we lived in them, our stories bled into the walls and became a part of the house? What if our ghosts were always going to haunt the places we’ve lived, along with everyone else who’s lived there?
All of the songs are short stories; even if again and again the narrator's voice is transmitted to the instruments, the piano, the guitars, an accordion. And in comparison to the very song-oriented debut by Electric President, 24-year-old ,Ben Cooper’s alter ego (Radical Face) and second musical affair of the heart, Ghost, has become a songwriter-album. Or rather a song-writing album, the tracks as carefully arranged interiors, chamber folk, pocket symphonies, passionate melodies.

ALL SMILES - MOTH IN A CLOUD OF SMOKE

Artist / Band: ALL SMILES
Song (MP3): MOTH IN A CLOUD OF SMOKE
Album: Ten Readings Of A Warning
File Under: Indie / Acoustic / Rock
Label: http://www.dangerbirdrecords.com

Info: Jim Fairchild is the singer/songwriter and general creator of All Smiles, his first solo outing after his days in the band Grandaddy. His debut record was made along with drummers Janet Weiss (Sleater Kinney, Quasi), Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse, Black Heart Procession, Magic Magicians), Danny Seim (Lack Thereof, Menomena), and Solon Bixler (Great Northern).
The record was almost entirely created on 8-track, recorded in living rooms up and down the West Coast. "It was a no-budget record," says Jim. "There wasn't any backing yet. I just set up whatever gear I had in the kitchen of our borrowed house in Portland, and our living room in Los Angeles. It sounds like the places it was recorded in. You can hear the walls, and the floors, and the ceilings, and you can hear the cars, and the trees, and the guys selling drugs outside."
The album was mixed by Brian Deck (Iron and Wine, Modest Mouse). All Smiles is held together by Jim Fairchild's spare and decisive sounds, and a resistance to over-embellish. "It couldn't be any other way. I didn't want it to be bigger than it was supposed to be."

THE TWILIGHT SAD - AND SHE WOULD DARKEN THE MEMORY

Artist / Band: THE TWILIGHT SAD
Song (MP3): AND SHE WOULD DARKEN THE MEMORY
Album: Fourteen Autumns And Fifteen Winters
File Under: Folk / Experimental / Other
Label: fat-cat.co.uk/

Info: Based outside of Glasgow, The Twilight Sad formed in late 2003. The band played a couple of gigs at the 13th Note in Glasgow, creating half hour-long pieces of music using guitars, bass, drums, theremin, tape loops from films and old folk/country songs, effects pedals, toy keyboards, thumb pianos, saws, computer games and a lot of noise in an attempt to try and discover a sound they could call their own and continue to develop. After these two shows, they rejected many gig offers, and became a more reclusive unit, spending any spare time they had in the studio focused on writing and sculpting away at new material.
In September 2005, they wrote four songs they thought gave a relatively good perspective of the band, and went into a local studio to record them, producing it themselves. Staying in the studio for many nights, they used a 24-track desk to build layer upon layer of sound, trying to get the best representation as possible. Thinking that the CD they came out with showed little more than some kind of raw potential, they posted it down to FatCat as a demo. After receiving a positive response and a request for more tracks, the band continued to expand on their song writing and kept regularly in contact with the label. Instead of paying for more studio time they began to make lo-fi recordings in bedrooms, bathrooms and their own rehearsal space, developing a more folk/experimental/noise sound. In mid-May the band came down to Brighton to meet the label and played on the bill of a FatCat night on the pier alongside The Mutts, Charlottefield, The Rank Deluxe, and fellow Glasgow band, The Frightened Rabbit.
Where the band’s recorded sound is layered with many melodies, their live sound is a more intense experience which replaces the intricacies of the recordings with a more visceral wall of noise.

MAPS & ATLASES - EVERY PLACE IS A HOUSE

Artist / Band: MAPS & ATLASES
Song (MP3): EVERY PLACE IS A HOUSE
Album: Three, swallows, houses
File Under: Indie / Pop / Other

Info: Maps and Atlases offer songs that wrestle themselves from flailing, algebraic fits of spazzy guitar notes and drum ruptures to lulling, voice-driven melodies that speak stories using lyrical images strung together like soup cans chasing a Cadillac. Mostly influenced by experimental and technically adept musicians such as Hella, Don Caballero, and Psych-Folkies Devendra Banhart and Six Organs of Admittance, Maps and Atlases create a distinctive blend of the intricate and organic.

GET HIM EAT HIM - 2X2

Artist / Band: GET HIM EAT HIM
Song (MP3): 2X2
Album: Arms Down
File Under: Indie / Powerpop / New Wave
Label: Absolutely Kosher Records

Info: Formed in February of 2004, Get Him Eat Him consists of five young men with passable small motor skills playing big, confusing music. Paroxysm-laden pop that balances gravity and gratuitousness, the music of Get Him Eat Him has been described as "a hybrid of The Wrens, Enon, and Weezer's pop sensibility." In July of 2004, Get Him Eat Him signed to Absolutely Kosher Records, home of The Wrens, Frog Eyes, and Sunset Rubdown (Spencer from Wolf Parade). Get Him Eat Him has played shows with Broken Social Scene, The Wrens, The Arcade Fire, The Constantines, Beirut, Black Dice, Xiu Xiu, and The Walkmen. The band released their debut album, recorded at John Vanderslice's Tiny Telephone Studios by Jay Pellicci (Deerhoof, Erase Errata), July 26, 2005 on Absolutely Kosher. Three tour EPs followed in late 2005 and early 2006. On June 5th, Get Him Eat Him will release their second full-length Arms Down, co-produced by former Dismemberment Plan guitarist Jason Caddell.

PATRICK WOLF - THE MAGIC POTION

Artist / Band: PATRICK WOLF
Song (MP3): THE MAGIC POTION
ALBUM: The Magic Position
FILE UNDER: Pop
INFO: Patrick, now age 23, grew up in South London and began refining his precocious talents at the age of eleven when he escaped from school troubles by late night experimentation in the corners of his bedroom with his violin, voice and car boot sale organs on a four-track tape recorder. Although beginning his musical education a few years before with rigorous violin lessons and church choirs, it wasn't until Patrick's obsession for early twentieth-century electronics - which lead to a study and construction of a Theremin - that Patrick really developed a strong ambition to create new and innovative music and that has power and emotion enough to communicate directly to the heart.

CLOROX GIRLS - BOYS/GIRLS

Artist / Band: CLOROX GIRLS
Song (MP3): BOYS/GIRLS
Album: SXSW 2007 Showcasing Artists
File Under: Punk / Pop
Label: BYO

Info: couple of years ago Thurston Moore and Byron Coley quipped that Clorox Girls “are harder to ignore than a trouser full of antlers.” But why....
Imagine Buddy Holly living in 1979 Los Angeles, taking a whole lot of speed... throw him a surfboard on the beach, then painfully relocate him to rainy Portland, Oregon; home to bands like Wipers, Styphnoids, Poison Idea, Dead Moon, Exploding Hearts, Observers, Hunches, Nice Boys..... and those relentless Clorox Girls.
A much anticipated third full length album has finally been recorded, engineered by boy genious Pat Kearns (Exploding Hearts) in Portland, Oregon. In spring of ´06, Clorox Girls played 47 shows in 45 days in Europe, and immediately afterwards toured the westcoast, Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina for a total of roughly 200 shows in the US and abroad for ´06. This year of our lord 2007 takes the fellas back on tour across the globe with a brand new LP J´aime Les Filles.
What you have in Clorox Girls is a band that plays late 70s style punk, from a time when punk was influenced by the likes of Chuck Berry, Ritchie Valens, and Howlin Wolf. Couple this with early 80’s Los Angeles, you know, Gears, Germs, Dickies, and you have an idea of where these boys are coming from.
The bands’ origins go back to Oakland, CA, 2003, when the fellas were living in a dingy warehouse full of crust punks. They wanted to start a band that was real poppy, kind of like the first Red Cross EP, the polar opposite of the obnoxious crust that the dreadlocked frowners were always blaring. One to two minute unstoppable fucked up pop songs. Verse Chorus Verse Chorus Stop. Or maybe Intro Verse Chorus Verse Chorus Bridge Chorus Stop. Clorox began to play frequently around the Bay Area before employing a “blitzkrieg tour strategy” that took them on the road. Portland´s Jonny Cat Records released their 4-song 7” debut that immediately sold out. The single was repressed, and the band embarked on its first US tour in the fall of 2003. On this tour, SmartGuy Records saw CG´s play, and over burritos agreed to release their first two LPs which were thusly recorded at Seattle´s Egg Studios with Kurt Bloch (Fastbacks) who engineered the “killer” 12-song self titled debut in the winter of´03, and the band´s second album, This Dimension in the winter of´04. The initial vinyl pressing of the first album sold out in two weeks so what was left to do but press up more copies and lots and lots of touring, and even a WFMU radio session where they shared the air with Belgian punk legends The Kids.
And 2007! A new lineup and a new LP! On the 14 tracks that comprise J´aime Les Filles, Clorox Girls show their addiction to French pop, referencing Jacques Du Tronc in the album title, covering pop star Lio´s 70´s hit ¨Le Banana Split,¨ and tinges of Francophile inspiration can be noticed if listened carefully (Les Calamites, Starshooter, Plastic Bertrand). Also some piano a la Dickies, some Beach Boys backing vocals... maybe even a bit of influence from (gasp) the Knack jabbing a ¨fuck you¨ to the punks? Ye Ye meets 70´s LA punk meets Buddy Holly?...Just grab your surfboard and go with it. J´aime Les Filles is available on CD and LP April 17th 2007 on BYO Records.

MIDNIGHT MOVIES - CORAL DEN

Artist / Band: MIDNIGHT MOVIES
Song (MP3): CORAL DEN
Album: Lion the Girl
File Under: Psychedelic / Pop / Indie

Label: New Line RecordsInfo: idnight Movies would have you believe that Los Angeles isn’t just Andy Warhol’s garishly two-dimensional Marilyns—shallow, neon, and soulless. Nor would they equate the city to the hip-hop murals of Keith Haring, or some graffitied gangsta’s paradise, all bling bling and big pimpin’. The LA that surfaces in the music of Midnight Movies is a hazy, mysterious thing—warm, eerie nights, and ghosts of great actors haunting a would-be desert town. The music itself is the landscape’s appropriately ghastly space-rock soundtrack, reminiscent of outfits like Yo La Tengo and Stereolab, and fronted by Nico sound-alike Angeleno Gena Oliver, the band’s drummer and principal songwriter.

RA RA RIOT - EACH YEAR

Artist / Band: RA RA RIOT
Song (MP3): EACH YEAR
Album: Ra Ra Riot
File Under: Rock / Indie

Info: Ra Ra Riot is an amorphous blob (read as: band) that consists of six highly dedicated individuals, each bringing her/his own experiences as both people and musicians to the metaphorical table. We feel strongly about moving people physically and mentally as a means of affecting positive micro/macrocosmic change. Formed and currently based in Syracuse, NY, Ra Ra Riot spends its time shaking the hands of foreign dignitaries, practicing, playing shows, eating pizza, and going about the business of everyday life. We have only existed since January 2006 C.E., an infant in that sense, but already have developed significantly as people and musicians. We look forward to seeing how the sound morphs as we hit adolescence and the subsequent teen years.

THE SHINS - KNOW YOUR ONION!

Artist / Band: THE SHINS
Song (MP3): KNOW YOUR ONION!
Album: Oh, Inverted World
File Under: Indie
Label: Sub Pop

Info: The Shin's debut full-length, 2001's Oh, Inverted World, was a stunner; resoundingly well-received and landing itself on numerous year-end best-of-lists. MOJO placed it at ..14 of the year and commented, "This quartet from Albuquerque, New Mexico captured our hearts this summer with their pristine pop perfection." And, Seattle's The Stranger went even further with, "...a referential, brilliant record which had better blow up, or the world has forgotten what pop music is all about." As far as we're concerned it did blow up - seems there's still some hope for the world and its conception of pop music. Since that first record, singer/songwriter/guitarist James Mercer and drummer Jesse Sandoval moved from Albuquerque to Portland, OR and bassist Neal Langford was replaced with Dave Hernandez (ex-Scared Of Chaka), who played bass on the stand-out track from the first record, "New Slang." Chutes Too Narrow, their heavily anticipated follow-up, was recorded in James' basement home studio, with later mixing assistance from Phil Ek (Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, David Cross, Les Savy Fav, etc.). And, with 10 songs, clocking in at just over 30 minutes, the new record is a brief yet entirely scintillating glimpse at chiming, reflective and perfectly skewed pop innovation.

KISS KISS - MACHINES

ARTIST / BAND: KISS KISS
SONG (MP3): MACHINES
ALBUM: Reality Vs. The Optimist
FILE UNDER: Indie / Experimental / Progressive
LABEL: http://eyeballrecords.com

INFO: What distinguishes Kiss Kiss, a 5-piece orchestral rock ensemble, from its contemporaries is a unique synthesis of influences, resulting in moody music that hangs and dissolves on shrewd, artful songwriting. Blending analog synths, violin, distorted guitar and ambient sounds with tight arrangements and male/female vocals, it’s as though Kiss Kiss channeled the fragments of its musical predecessors, and reassembled them. Known for its unpredictable, high-energy live performances, Kiss Kiss routinely leads audiences into manic, affected states of high emotion. Coupled with a relentless tour schedule, the band has, in just three years, amassed a fiercely devoted, nationwide fanbase. Kiss Kiss is a rock-pop outfit, which turns that genre gracefully, but without compromise, on its head. Its aspiration? To breathe a new word into the lexicon of rock.

FIELD MUSIC - GIVE IT LOSE IT TAKE IT

ARTIST / BAND: FIELD MUSIC
SONG (MP3): GIVE IT LOSE IT TAKE IT
ALBUM: Tones of Town
FILE UNDER: Alternative / Folk / Psychedelic
LABEL: Memphis Industries

INFO: Field Music (songwriting brothers Peter and David Brewis plus keyboard manipulator Andrew Moore) covered a lot of ground in 2006. The trio from Sunderland, England, have performed in Berlin, in Milan and Barcelona, toured France with Architecture in Helsinki and the UK twice on their lonesome, including Reading and Leeds Festival appearances, and the US where they were one of the surprise hits of SXSW. They also found time to invent a dance craze (according to English tabloid newspaper The News of the World), etch one side of a 7" with a list of things you really shouldn't do but probably have, release a cash-in-b-sides album which gave a brief and inaccurate history of a slew of pre-Field Music experiments. In addition the band also found time to record their second album proper.

RICHARD SWIFT - KISSES FOR THE MISSES

ARTIST / BAND: RICHARD SWIFT
SONG (MP3): KISSES FOR THE MISSES
ALBUM: Dressed Up For The Letdown
FILE UNDER: Indie Pop
LABEL: SECRETLY CANADIAN

INFO: Richard Swift is an American singer, multi-instrumentalist, producer and short film maker. From late teens to yearly twenties Swift found himself providing for his family by doing an assortment of jobs... as a KFC cook, a carpenter, and at one point performing at large Fundamental Christian gatherings, such as Promise Keepers (the only highlight for Swift being that he got to sing "Amazing Grace" with the legendary Smokey Robinson). The experience left Swift with a bad taste in his mouth, and he moved on and began focusing on supporting himself and family by recording his own music as Richard Swift instead of the many pseudonyms he was hiding behind. He started honing his skills as keyboardist in the band, Starflyer 59 and in his own ambient-electronic outfit, Instruments of Science and Technology. Swift and his live band, The Sons of National Freedom, have earned a cult following through frequent touring in the US and Europe, alongside My Morning Jacket,Two Gallants and The Walkmen. His big break came at a performance at the 2006 South by Southwest festival. Swift's influences span Bob Dylan to early seventies dub acts including the Congos and Lee Perry, whilst his latest material has drawn comparisons to Burt Bacharach, Van Dyke Park, Paul McCartney , Rufus Wainwright and Elliott Smith amongst othe

DAPPLED CITIES - FIRE FIRE FIRE

ARTIST / BAND: DAPPLED CITIES
SONG (MP3): FIRE FIRE FIRE
ALBUM: Grand dance
FILE UNDER: Tropical / Happy Hardcre / Neo-soul
LABEL: Dangerbird Records.

INFO: Fun exuberant indie-pop, that's weird enough to be interesting and familiar enough to be indelibly catchy" - Rolling Stone ****

With a name like Dappled Cities, it was always going to be a bit different. But we just didn't know it yet. We thought we were doing what every band did; Just play loud. We even thought our name was normal. Early on we were described variably as a "cross between Pavement, The Flaming Lips and an episode of Sesame Street," and "some kind of weird shit that just rocks."

Fair enough. Dappled Cities are preparing to unleash their 'Granddance' album upon an unsuspecting world. Recorded and mixed in Los Angeles & Nashville with a premier league production team of Jim Fairchild (of Grandaddy fame), Peter Walker and Jacquire King (Modest Mouse, Tom Waits, Kings Of Leon).

APOSTLE OF HUSTLE - MY SWORD HANDS ANGER

ARTIST / BAND: APOSTLE OF HUSTLE
SONG (MP3): MY SWORD HANDS ANGER
ALBUM: The National Anthem of Nowhere
FILE UNDER: Indie / Tropical / Folk Rock
LABEL: Arts&Crafts

INFO: Apostle of Hustle is one of those amazing live bands that I feel just doesn't capture the whole deal when they record. The live show features amazing rhythms derived from flamenco tap dancing on a big amplified piece of wood. I'm hoping that hasn't changed.I've seen Andrew Whiteman with Broken Social Scene a couple times, once they were great and once they were terrible, but Whiteman is always consistantly good. His Cuban origin was evident in the music - a latin feel prevails throughout. I don't know how prevalent it is in this song, not as much. So I don't know if the rest of the album is like this or not - I like it, but it's just, again, not like his live show. I haven't heard it all yet though, so I'm passing no judgements.

WINTERSLEEP - JAWS OF LIFE

ARTIST / BAND: WINTERSLEEP
SONG (MP3): JAWS OF LIFE
ALBUM: Untitled
FILE UNDER: Indie / French pop
LABEL: Labwork Music

INFO: Wintersleep’s Untitled has drawn comparisons to Radiohead, Mogwai, Hayden & Low and is just one of the reasons they've sold over 20,000 records in Canada and have been voted “Best Band” in Halifax three years running. At the close of 2006, Wintersleep had just wrapped up what would be their third tour across Canada in a year. And it ain’t over yet! THE ACORN - SPRING THAW

ARTIST / BAND: THE ACORN
SONG (MP3): SPRING THAW
ALBUM: Tin Fist
FILE UNDER: Indie / Folk Rock / Grindcore
LABEL: Paper Bag Records

INFO: Spawned in the fertile swampland of Canada’s national capital, The Acorn has been creating experimental folk and music since early 2004. The project was initially the brain/lovechild of Rolf Klausener, who composed a series of gorgeous electro-acoustic folk tunes under the name. However, when his interest in bedroom electronics waned, Klausener decided to surround himself with a group of short to medium-sized musicians: Jeffrey, Howie and Jeff, who Voltron-like turned The Acorn into a full band concern. In July 2004, they released a lush, mostly instrumental tribute to the idyllic and vowel-heavy Outaouais region, called The Pink Ghosts. And in the fall of 2005, they released the Blankets! EP, a more melodically focused effort, which garnered them glowing praise from dozens of music blogs, the CBC, Exclaim! Magazine, as well as a top 50 spot on Canada’s National Campus charts.

CALLA - BRONSON

ARTIST / BAND: Calla
SONG (MP3): Bronson
ALBUM: Strength In Numbers
FILE UNDER: Rock
INFO: Calla was formed in New York City in 1997 by Aurelio Valle (guitar, vocals), Sean Donovan (bass, keyboards, programming), and Wayne B. Magruder (percussion, programming), adding Peter Gannon in 2003 and Sean Donovan departing in 2004. However, the band's origins can be traced to Texas in 1993, where Valle, Magruder and Gannon began performing together in the Denton band, The Factory Press. The Factory Press relocated to New York in 1995, recording The Smoky Ends of a Burnt out Day with producers Kid Congo Powers and Matt Verta-Ray. The group split in 1997 and the album was not released until early 1998, by which time Valle and Magruder were pursuing new musical ventures. Most notably, Magruder worked with Bowery Electric and Windsor for the Derby. A four-track demo was completed in 1998, generating interest from the Brussels label Sub Rosa, which released the band's first album to critical acclaim in 1999. Calla's self-titled debut prised apart traditional song structures and reconfigured the components into subtly apocalyptic, cinematic pieces, at times evoking electronically processed Ennio Morricone soundscapes. Calla subsequently made the transition to performance, a process that gave Valle, Magruder, and Donovan their first taste of playing together outside a studio environment. Playing live had a significant impact on the band's sound and direction. Having been excited by the debut album, Michael Gira was particularly impressed by the way Calla's music had been changed by live performance and signed the group to his label, Young God Records.

THE FATELS - SUNNI CHER

ARTIST / BAND: THE FATELS
SONG (MP3): SUNNI CHER
FILE UNDER: Alternative / Indie / Punk
LABEL: Unsigned

INFO: Fatels are a London three piece and can be found gigging and touting their chainsaw punk pop around London's prime alternative venues including support slots with the likes of Babyshambles, The Suffrajets, The Paddingtons, The Bishops, Little Man Tate, White Rose Movement, not to mention a storming set in Summer 06 at Lovebox Festival playing alongside The Holloways and Blondelle. A plethora of gigs has propelled Fatels firmly into the indie spotlight. Regular gig haunts include Barfly, Waterats, Nambucca, Rhythm Factory, The Spreadeagle (until it lost its license), La Fleche Dor in Paris to name a few.
Fresh from Ignition Studios in Holloway, new recording Tough Luck Kid is a slice of pure three minute punk pop perfection! The track won the band the Virgin Radio Extreme unsigned band Face Off for a record breaking FIVE weeks in a row! Marsha at XFM also picked up on the track for her notorious web pod casts.

THE SAMMIES - FALLING OUT

ARTIST / BAND: THE SAMMIES
SONG (MP3): FALLING OUT
ALBUM: The Sammies
FILE UNDER: Indie / Alternative / Rock
LABEL: Morisen Records

INFO: The Sammies probably weren't even alive for post-punk, let alone punk, but what does that matter? On this energetic and infectious album track, they sound like Bloc Party or the Futureheads reincarnated as a Midwestern bar band. Drummer Donnie Yale makes his hi-hat sound ready for a fight, Gymmy Thunderbird's bass steps up disco-style to the chorus, and Murphy Upshaw's guitar is a rowdy pit of jostling elbows. Sounding a little like Mike Ness and a little like Paul Westerberg, vocalist Frank Backgammon foregoes darkly existential angst in favor of light hook-up despair, frankly admitting, "I wanna screw you tonight! I wanna be your best friend!" while the band puts the moves on that hot pop-hook chorus. "Falling Out" is just one cheeseball pick-up line away from getting into your ears' pants.

I'M FROM BARCELONA - THIS BOY (FEAT. LONEY, DEAR)

ARTIST / BAND: I'M FROM BARCELONA
SONG (MP3): THIS BOY (FEAT. LONEY, DEAR)
ALBUM: Let Me Introduce My Friends
FILE UNDER: Pop / Indie
LABEL: EMI

INFO: Fueled by love and vacation, Emanuel Lundgren writes a couple of explosive happy pop songs and decides to gather all his friends to put them on tape. His apartment turns into a friendly factory as people come and go loaded with banjos, accordions and kazoos. Some weeks (and lifetime memories) later, a homemade EP is finished and Emanuel collects almost all the 29 participants for a first and last live show in August 2005. What he thought was an ending was a beginning of numerous rumours and talk about this new and exciting band. One show soon turned into plenty. Swedish media goes out of control and bloggers all over the world starts sharing their knowledge about the Swedish big band. In only a couple of months more than 20 000 people have downloaded songs from the bands website. Today over 140 000 people have watched the video for We're from Barcelona on the website youtube.com! The EP "Don't Give Up On Your Dreams, Buddy!" is released on EMI Sweden in early 2006 and is followed up by the full length album "Let Me Intruduce My Friends". A record full of euphoric pop gems and sing-a-long friendly choruses . The anthem "We're From Barcelona" climbs the charts and the band is headed for a summer of festivals, including Primavera Sound in Barcelona. I'm from Barcelona embraces the do-it-yourself mentality and live it's hard to say where the band ends and the audience begins.

THE BESNARD LAKES - AND YOU LIED TO ME

Artist / Band: THE BESNARD LAKES
Song (MP3): AND YOU LIED TO ME
Album: Besnard Lakes are the Dark Horse
File Under: Psychedelic / Pop / Progressive
Label: www.secretlycanadian.com/

Info: Emerging from Montreal's dark corners is THE BESNARD LAKES, a six-piece centered around the atmospheric songs of husband and wife team Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas, whose expansive sound culls from, but does not adhere to, numerous aspects of rock 'n' roll's rich history. The record is set for release in the United States and throughout the world on Jagjaguwar (and in Canada on Outside Music) on February 20, 2007. "The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse" was recorded at singer Lasek's own Breakglass Studios, which is the studio of choice for bands like Wolf Parade, Islands and Sunset Rubdown. These bands have also toured and performed with The Besnard Lakes, while members of Stars, The Dears and Godspeed/Silver Mt. Zion make guest appearances on "…Are The Dark Horse."

ODAWAS - ALLELUIA

Artist / Band: ODAWAS
Song (MP3): ALLELUIA
Album: Raven and the White Night
File Under: Folk Rock / Psychedelic / Lounge
Label: Jagjaguwar

Info: Odawas' 2005 debut on Jagjaguwar, The Aether Eater, was a fiery space oddity detailing the brave, the lost, and the maligned. The journey was epic. But the obstinate darkness and disastrous side-effects of space travel are getting lost, and thus turning inward on their follow-up album Raven And The White Night. Odawas' continual pursuit of this experience leads them again and again to these dark corners where the lines between "the journey" and "the chronicler" can easily be blurred. It is here, in this amorphous abyss that Odawas nestle down and create music that bundles our struggles, rumors, egos, failures, and paranoias. Odawas allows us, the patient learners, to see a parallel universe where fear, apathy and uncertainty can lead to a natural bridge that releases us from our own abyss.

AIR - ONCE UPON A TIME

Artist / Band: AIR
Song (MP3): ONCE UPON A TIME
Album: Pocket Symphony
File Under: Electronica / Pop / Experimental
Label: Astralwerks

Info: Following their 800,000 selling third album, “Talkie Walkie” (2004), Air are set to return with their new album “Pocket Symphony” to be released as a premiere on the digital platforms on 19th Feb 2007 excluding North Americaand everywhere on CD/Double LP/download on 5th March 2007.
The album, made up of 12 songs that were recorded over the last 18 months and co-produced by long time partner Nigel Godrich, features vocals by Dunckel and Godin themselves but also from Jarvis Cocker and Neil Hannon (Divine Comedy).
Air once again achieve that rare supernova of artistic vision that dares to reconcile palpable, unapologetic ambience with unpretentious soulful simplicity. They create the alternate now, an environment that begs escapism without denying humanity.
While conventional instruments continue to play a great role, Air have fashioned several tracks from the new album with the addition of Far East classical instruments which Godin learnt to play from Shoko, a Japanese master - namely the Koto (usually referred to as a Japanese floor harp) and the Shamisen, a 3-stringed instrument which is one of Japan’s most popular classical instruments & resembles the banjo. Working their way throughout the album as musical ricochets, these unearthly sounds of an alien nature add another motif to Air’s sonic architecture.
Brought by the band into the visual creative process of the album artwork is contemporary artist Xavier Veilhan. Veilhan who, like Air, is both fascinated by the possibilities afforded by modern technology, and inspired by the conventional forms of 'classical' art, revisits and ‘models’ reality using modern media (photography, 3D scanning, digital imagery).
Air will embark on a European tour from Mid March, which will be followed by shows in the US from Mid April to Mid May. They will play at major festivals both in Europe and Japan during the summer and then continue touring for the rest of 2007.
