DEERHUNTER - LIKE NEW

Artist / Band: DEERHUNTER
Song (MP3): LIKE NEW
Album: Fluorescent Grey EP
File Under: Live Electronics / Jam Band / Melodramatic Popular Song
Label: Kranky

Info: biography
Deerhunter began in 2001 with the ambition of fusing the lulling hypnotic states induced by ambient and minimalist music with the klang and propulsion of garage rock. The band has weathered chaotic line-up changes, the death of a member, and much discouragement. Their live performances almost always leave audiences polarized. They are a five-piece based in Atlanta.

EMMA POLLOCK - LIMBS

Artist / Band: EMMA POLLOCK
Song (MP3): LIMBS
Album: SXSW 2007 Showcasing Artists
File Under: Alternative / Showtunes / Melodramatic Popular Song
Label: 4AD

Info: Former Delgados member. Signed to 4AD Records as a solo artist in June 2005 after having major panic attack about what to do after band split. It was either that or bugger off out of the music industry altogether and go and find work that I would probably walk out of within a month. Considered putting out an album on Chemikal Underground for about 5mins and then figured out that asking my freshly ex-band mates to put out my solo record may be a little odd for us all so I then went to look elsewhere and as Delgados had a history with the Beggars Group of labels (Mantra put out our albums outside the UK) I ended up with a deal with 4AD which i'm delighted about as I've been a fan of the label since I left school. I wrote much of the first solo album in 2005 immediately following the band's split and by March 2006, myself, Paul Savage, Jamie Savage (Paul's brother) and Campbell McNeil (Aereogramme) were all ready to go into our newly built studio Chem19 in Blantyre, outside Glasgow to record the album. We had Victor Van Vugt producing, and the weeks that followed were some of the most fun and stressful I've every known. I ended up spending weeks on guitars after Victor had left and by July was ready to go over for final mixing in New York for a week. That was great fun and one of the few times I've had time to just walk around in the city without being stressed out about playing a gig in a few hours. To cut a long story short, the album is almost there, but not quite. Still a couple of mixes to iron out but I'm really pleased with how it's sounding now and almost don't want it to come out. Everything's been really positive so far and it always feels so risky putting something out there that means so much to you after so much work... Debut solo album due out 2007.

MARLA HANSEN - WEDDING DAY

Artist / Band: MARLA HANSEN
Song (MP3): WEDDING DAY
Album: Wedding Day EP
File Under: Indie / Acoustic

Info: Hello, hello, I am Marla the viola player! One day recently, when tired of my usual job of providing steady yet thoughtful off-beats and supportive harmonizations, I had an epiphany. I realized that I too could have the melody! That I deserved it as much as anyone! And that it might even be possible for me to have the melody for an entire piece of music and that said piece of music might not fall apart! Sounds crazy, why would a violist, a PA to the violin executive, a nurse for the flute surgeon, dare to dream of such things? I didn't take time to try to answer that question, instead I went forth and wrote and pondered and agonized and rejoiced and the results of which are some songs that are here for you to preview, they are from an EP that my friends and I are (sort of) speedily crafting, which will be available soon. These songs are from my solo project, but I perform with lots of other groups too. I'm the violist for My Brightest Diamond, you can hear me on the new record Bring Me the Workhorse. I also perform with Sufjan Stevens, and recently had the honor of being a member of the Magical Butterfly Brigade! You can hear me on Illinois, and also on his new Christmas record (vol. 5, playing and singing!) I perform all over NYC with my good friend Sebastian Krueger's project Inlets, and I also work with Chris Rael, with Clare and the Reasons (when Beth is out of town,) and with the new music group Fireworks. Sometimes I play with the Oneida boys too, you can hear me on their wild and wonderful record The Wedding. Earlier this year I even got to rock it with Jay-Z at Radio City, and with Kanye West on SNL. I still play classical music too, with a new found appreciation for off-beats now that my melody craving is sated, and in the event that this happens all will be alerted. Thanks for visiting! m

BLONDE REDHEAD - 23

Artist / Band: BLONDE REDHEAD
Song (MP3): 23
Album: 23
File Under: Indie
Label: Smells Like Records

Info: Blonde Redhead is an alternative rock or indie rock band. It was formed by Kazu Makino, Maki Takahashi and Italian twin brothers Simone Pace and Amedeo Pace born in Milan. They take their name from a song by DNA, a 70's and 80's no wave band from New York.

Blonde Redhead caught the attention of Sonic Youth's drummer, Steve Shelley, who produced their first self titled album in 1993. Shortly afterwards Maki Takahashi left the band and the remaining band members continued as a trio. On their third album, Fake Can Be Just As Good, they were joined by Vern Rumsey of Unwound as a guest bassist. After this they continued without a bass player for the release of the remainder of their albums. On their fourth album, In an Expression of the Inexpressible, Guy Picciotto of Fugazi was hired as producer, as well as contributing to / singing on the song "Futurism vs. Passeism Part 2". Guy Picciotto has produced their latest two records as well, Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons and Misery Is a Butterfly.
Blonde Redhead has gradually increased in popularity in the underground music scene. Their early music has been described as emulative of Sonic Youth, but their more recent releases have begun to stray from this generalization. Kazu Makino is noted for her high, eerie voice, which hovers over melodic guitar riffs and rhythmic drum beats.

The large span of time between Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons and Misery Is a Butterfly is attributed to Makino's recovery time after being trampled by a horse. Much of Misery Is a Butterfly's imagery and illustration is equestrian or reflective of the accident. In the liner notes, Makino thanks her doctors "and her friends who fed her and cheered her up when she couldn't do much on her own."

On January 11, 2007, a post on the band's official website [1] confirmed that their latest album titled "23" will be released on 4AD on April 10, 2007 in North America and on April 23, 2007 in Europe.

LET'S GO SAILING - ICICLES

Artist / Band: LET'S GO SAILING
Song (MP3): ICICLES
Album: The Chaos in Order
File Under: Indie / Pop / Alternative
Label: Yardley Pop

Info: "Let's go sailing is full of rainbows and fairies. But it also has a darker side...It is full of lost and neglected stuffed animals found at the side of the road." In November of 2002, Shana Levy left indie pop outfit Irving to pursue Let's Go Sailing. She asked friends Tanya Haden, Nikki Monninger, Brent Turner and Byron Reynolds to work on an album's worth of material and soon enough they began recording a demo with Chris Chandler (Flaming Lips/Modest Mouse/Elliott Smith) and Rod Cervera (The Rentals/Weezer). The recording process quickly gained momentum and, with the help of Chris and Jim Putnam (Radar Bros.), Shana decided to make a hi-fi record independently. With lots of tweaking and a little tlc from Ben Mumphrey (Frank Black/The Pixies), the record was finally finished!!!!

THE RED BUTTON - SHE'S GOING DOWN

Artist / Band: THE RED BUTTON
Song (MP3): SHE'S GOING DOWN
Album: She's About To Cross My Mind
File Under: Pop / Rock / Powerpop
Label: Grimble

Info: The Red Button is made up of Los Angeles-based singer-songwriters Seth Swirsky and Mike Ruekberg. Ruekberg's indie credentials are rock solid: He spent the '90s as writer and singer for an underachieving but beloved band (Minneapolis-based pop-rockers Rex Daisy, who recorded a CD for Geffen Records with producer Paul Fox, only to have the album unceremoniously rejected by Geffen for not sounding enough like Guns and Roses), then moved to L.A. and wrote the soundtrack for an underachieving but beloved indie film (Dummy, starring Adrien Brody, which played almost constantly on cable TV for a couple of years).

ARCADE FIRE - BLACK MIRROR

Artist / Band: ARCADE FIRE
Song (MP3): BLACK MIRROR
Album: Neon Bible
File Under: Indie / Alternative / Pop
Label: Merge Records

Info: The Arcade Fire are Win Butler, Régine Chassagne, Richard Reed Parry, Tim Kingsbury, Sarah Neufeld, Jeremy Gara and Win's little brother Will.2005 was an eventful one for The Arcade Fire. In June 2003, Régine's grandmother Nancy died; in August, Win and Régine were married; in September, the Arcade Fire started recording their debut album. In March 2004, Win and Will's grandfather Alvino Rey died; Richard Parry’s Aunt Betsy passed away in April; in May 2004 the Arcade Fire were signed to Merge Records, and completed their album. It having been something of a heavy hitting year, the band's minds were somewhat a-whirl. The deaths of Nancy , Alvino and Betsy brought to mind all the people they had loved who had died: they decided to call their newly completed album Funeral.
The album, confirmed to be called Neon Bible, is to be released on March 5, 2007 (March 6 in North America), and the Arcade Fire have announced a European tour to take place during March and April in support of the album, which includes dates in the London Brixton Academy and the Paris Olympia According to sources, including MOJO magazine, the new album makes use of a pipe organ, the Hurdy Gurdy, a military choir, and a full Hungarian orchestra, amongst others. Win Butler described the album as sounding "like standing by the ocean at night."

SISTER VANILLA - JAMCOLAS

Artist / Band: SISTER VANILLA
Song (MP3): JAMCOLAS
Album: Little Pop Rock
File Under: POP ROCK
Label: Capricorn

Info: Sister Vanilla is the project of Linda Reid, sister of the brothers Reid (the Jesus and Mary Chain, Freeheat, Lazycame). Linda was born in 1971, the year that the Reid household bought their first record player. Linda is chatty and bubbly and not a bit moody like her brothers. Her music is like a female-fronted Mary Chain and both her brothers play on the album (called Little Pop Rock).please note - i am not the real "sister vanilla" - this is fan-site, although i will use it to promote any of her activities!

THE VISITORS - CLEAN AND CIVILIZED

Artist / Band: THE VISITORS
Song (MP3): CLEAN AND CIVILIZED
Album: The Visitors
File Under: Indie / Punk
Label: www.eschatone.com

Info: The New York garage-punk trio recorded their first LP at Uncle Mitro’s Studio (The Little Killers, The Demands) in the heart of Brooklyn. While it only took about a week in total, it was recorded in two sessions that were spaced out by six months over the past year. With the help of Uncle Mitro, the trio created a melodic album with a gritty finish, straight out of the 1970’s punk scene, and complete with a cover of Roky Erickson’s “I Walked With a Zombie.” The Visitors is set to drop on February 13, 2007.

THE ELECTRIC SOFT PARADE - IF THAT'S THE CASE, THEN I DON'T KNOW (SINGLE VERSION)

Song (MP3): IF THAT'S THE CASE, THEN I DON'T KNOW (SINGLE VERSION)
Album: No Need To Be Downhearted
File Under: Psychedelic / Indie / Gospel
Label: Better Looking Records

Info: "A Beating Heart rocks like the Birmingham Philarmonic playing in Elbow's outside lavvy, Cold World is an ace Ben Foldsian plink-fest, and the ghost of a big pop Spiritualized casts a spectral pall across the rest. Monu-mental." - NME
"Swirling, schizophrenic indie treated as a series of orchestrations. Cold World out-shimmies The Strokes, and Everybody Wants could be a Bond Theme. All perfectly mixed and superbly sequenced as a single body of work." FILTER MAGAZINE

ANTENNAS - ADAPT!

Artist / Band: ANTENNAS
Song (MP3): ADAPT!
Album: Sins
File Under: Indie / New Wave / Rock
Label: Novoton

Info: Antennas was started as Novak in 2004 and released one album under that name. After the departure of two of the original members and a slight shift in musical style we decided to change our name to Antennas. Still having our ability to make magnificent pop melodies we now also have a more mature and modern sound. For a half year we practically locked ourselves in the Exsitensminimum studio together with our producer, Magnus Henriksson, and recorded what will be our "debut" album "Sins".Very much thanks to Magnus exquisite production we've have taken our songwriting to new heights. Lo-fi aesthetics meet full on orchestration with strings and horns. Nice harmonies meet distortion and glitches of noise. Our sensitive pop music have been dragged through the dirt and picked up pieces of the 80s and 90s when the we grew up.The focus is still on crafting powerful and moving songs which we've have done to perfection on this album

THE SIX PARTS SEVEN - STOLEN MOMENTS

ARTIST / BAND: THE SIX PARTS SEVEN
SONG (MP3): STOLEN MOMENTS
ALBUM: These Friends of Mine
FILE UNDER: Indie / Experimental / Pop
LABEL: http://www.suicidesqueeze.net/

INFO: "The thing about Six Parts Seven is we're fans of music rather than musicians first," explains guitarist/bassist/arranger Allen Karpinski, who - alongside his drumming brother Jay Karpinski, guitarist Tim Gerak and bass guitarist Mike Tolan - makes up the musical core of 6P7. "None of us are trained or anything like that; this band has always been a work in progress and over time we've just gotten better at assimilating all the things we love into the music." Abstractly drawing from mid-90's Touch and Go Records roster, the band have thoroughly recontextualized their influences to create something wholly unique with Casually Smashed To Pieces. While the latest disc formidably features trumpet and clarinet, fans will also recognize it as a return to form to the band's early days as a duo in many ways. "I think a lot of instrumental albums and songs are overly long," Allen admits. "I don't see any point in recording a 68 minute album at this point." In fact, Casually Smashed To Pieces is the band's shortest disc to date, clocking in at just the length of a sitcom (including commercials). "You can listen to the whole thing without being exhausted - and hopefully it'll leave the listener wanting more."However, none of these details would matter if not for what was actually encoded on the disc. Like the soundtrack to a heartbreaking film that never existed, the songs on Casually Smashed To Pieces are simultaneously beautiful and completely unpredictable. "Knock At My Door" features gorgeous guitar chords, layered arrangements and a twangy undercurrent; "Confusing Possibilities" features dueling melodic lines, shifting dynamics and sub-bass tones that transport the band's music into uncharted frequencies; and "Stolen Moments" showcases the singing horns, unorthodox chord voicing and crescendos so gradual you'll wonder how you got from point A to point B.Let's be honest though, instead of mapping out each track for you, you're probably best off putting the disc in your CD player and hearing it for yourself. Because like all great music, there's an element to Casually Smashed To Pieces that can't be conveyed via adjective or analogy. "Our music should be enjoyed , it shouldn't be intellectualized," Allen summarizes more succinctly than this writer ever could. "It can be, I guess, but it should be enjoyed first. Music should just be enjoyed."

ROSIE THOMAS - MUCH FARTHER TO GO

ARTIST / BAND: ROSIE THOMAS
SONG (MP3): MUCH FARTHER TO GO
ALBUM: These Friends of Mine
FILE UNDER: Indie / Folk / Alternative
LABEL: Singalong Records

INFO: One night in suburban Detroit, a twelve-year-old Rosie Thomas lay sleepless in her bed, obsessively dwelling on what she perceived to be her lack of life purpose. Then, well after 2 AM, it suddenly hit her. She sprung up and raced down the hall. “Daddy, Daddy, I know what my mission in life is,” Rosie exclaimed, poking her father. “I just want to entertain people.”Fast forward one decade later, recently transplanted to Seattle and frustrated with her decision to attend theater school, Rosie sat one night voicing her disappointment to new friend, singer-songwriter Damien Jurado, when he promptly turned to her and said, So, Rosie came to the city, trading the stiff route of producer-led studio recording from her previous album for the modest confines of a Brooklyn apartment with Sufjan and another songwriter friend, Denison Witmer. They set no deadlines or official recording schedule. The group of friends simply set up one or two microphones in a bedroom, living room, or kitchen and captured the songs as they happened.“Whether you are a musician, painter, or whatever, there is a passion that sometimes gets lost because all of the sudden you have to clock-in or have deadlines. I sort of wanted to get back to that time when I played music for nothing,” Rosie says.

CYANN & BEN - LET IT PLAY

ARTIST / BAND: CYANN & BEN
SONG (MP3): LET IT PLAY
ALBUM: Sweet Beliefs
FILE UNDER: Indie / Rock
LABEL: http://www.everrecords.com/

INFO: Those who like their music to be served in bitesize chunks should back away now, and those for whom an artist's value is based upon how many convictions they have received from the local constabulary should move on, because there's nothing to see here. But those for whom music is a joy, a world in which to marvel at the patterns that sound can draw in one's mind, will want to settle in for the long haul. Sweet Beliefs, the third album by Paris based Cyann & Ben, is about "the whole", the experience, and it demands your attention right from the outset. It's an epic and yet intimate album that draws upon a wide variety of influences, giving the space rock template a Gallic makeover by adding a much needed romantic grandeur. But because Cyann & Ben's Paris is not the one you see in Amelie – it's dirty, dark and stressful as much as beautiful – Sweet Beliefs, with its multi-layered and ambitious sweep, sounds as unsettling as it is irresistible.
The seeds for the enigmatically, altruistically named Cyann & Ben were sown in the cold, grey, rainy city of Charleville- Mezieres. A small provincial French town on the border with Belgium, it was the birthplace of the legendary French poet Arthur Rimbaud. But even he, locals are forced to concede, tried to run away four times by the time he was 17. Now it is due to be the site for the trial of Michel Fourniret, a self-confessed serial killer who claims to have murdered up to 20 people in France and Belgium between 1987 and 2001. Three of Cyann & Ben's four members – Cyann (keyboards, vocals), Ben (vocals, guitars), and Charlie (drums, samplers, synth) – grew up there, experimenting with music in various configurations before finally making good their escape to Paris.
Cyann & Ben as an entity, however, was formed in spring 2001, soon after the two started working together, and they were joined by Charlie and Loic (guitars, keyboards) for their first studio recordings. The chemistry that developed, especially when the four of them left the studio and took to the stage, was such that they soon started working and writing together regularly. Within a year they were signed to the currently dormant Gooom Records – former home to M83 – and not long afterwards released their debut album, Spring, to wide acclaim in their homeland. A second album, Happy Like A Tree, followed in late 2004, consolidating their reputation and, despite limited distribution, won a small army of fans across Europe. Both albums were also released in the US by Locust Music, home to – amongst others – releases by Espers, Matmos, Allen Ginsberg and Timothy Leary.
With their third album, however, Cyann & Ben have significantly refined their sound. The nine songs on Sweet Beliefs form a collection of noble but gritty beauty, its escapist enchantment anchored by a human frailty and vulnerability. But they also stand up for themselves: immerse yourself in tracks like "Words", with its inexorable journey towards its Pete Townsend conclusion; "Sparks of Love"'s gravity-defying magic; the heartbreaking intimacy of "Somewhere In The Light Of Time" or the tension of the album's title track as it draws towards an inevitable crescendo. As a suite of songs, its slow burning pleasures take a while to reveal themselves, but the majesty within is worth your patience. Memorably described by Manget as "a slow motion hurricane ripping apart your temporal lobe", Cyann & Ben's music offers an otherworldly grandeur: psychedelic, noble, fragile, pastoral, experimental and incandescent all at once, the sound of Sonic Youth reared on Pink Floyd's lost masterpiece Soundtrack To 'More', or maybe Low picking Mogwai to pieces.
Sweet Beliefs was largely recorded in Paris at Vogue Studios, home of the legendary French label Vogue, where legions of French stars of the 60s and 70s, including Francoise Hardy, cut many of their classic albums. After being closed and left to decay for many years it was recently renovated and Cyann & Ben were amongst the first to work there. Sweet Beliefs, like the studio and indeed Paris itself, is steeped in musical history but no stranger to hard times. It acknowledges the fact that wherever you are – Charleville-Mezieres or Paris – there is no such thing as a perfectly happy ending, but the efforts to find one can still be vastly rewarding. That is the secret of its success, and its conviction, honesty and optimism give us all a reason to believe…

ANDREW BIRD - HERETICS

ARTIST / BAND: ANDREW BIRD
SONG (MP3): HERETICS
ALBUM: Armchair Apocrypha
FILE UNDER: Rock / Folk / Indie
LABEL: Fat Possum

INFO:. Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist and lyricist Andrew Bird picked up his first violin at the age of 4. Actually, it was a Cracker Jack box with a ruler taped to it, and the first of his many Suzuki music lessons involved simply bowing to the teacher and going home. He spent his formative years soaking up classical repertoire completely by ear so when it came time for a restless teen-ager to make the jump to Hungarian Gypsy music, early jazz, country blues, south Indian etc., it wasn't such a giant leap. It's fitting that now, though classically trained, he has instead opted to play his violin in a most unconventional manner, accompanying himself on glockenspiel and guitar, adding singing and whistling to the equation, and becoming a pop songwriter in the process. Since beginning his recording career, Andrew has released nine albums: six studio albums, both solo and with his former group the Bowl of Fire, and three live albums. The soon to be released Armchair Apocrypha will bring the tally to ten. Armchair Apocrypha, to be released March 20 on Fat Possum, was recorded mainly in Minneapolis at Crazy Beast Studios (Ben Durrant) and Third Ear Studios (Tom Herbers). A cast of collaborators was drawn from the surrounding music scene: Drummer and keyboard player Martin Dosh, singer Haley Bonar, bassist Chris Morrissey, and multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Ylvisaker (who, along with Dosh, now features in Andrew's live lineup) added their talents to the album, which was mixed at the famed, haunted Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. It is an album that sums up where Andrew's career has taken him, yet is completely very much of his artistic present. The album opens with "Fiery Crash," which Bird describes as a superstitious incantation to protect him from plane crashes ("just a nod to mortality before you get on the plane"). As the album progresses, songs of "Dark Matter" ("do you wonder where the self resides, is it in your head or between your sides, and who will be that one who will decide its true location?), "Heretics" and "Plasticities" are sung with humor and lightness the belies their lyrical depth. "Scythian Empire," amid lush pizzicato violin, considers an obscure corner of history and its lost civilizations, and apocalyptic horsemen. And so it goes through to the final notes of "Yawny at the Apocalypse," varied and stunning musical tapestries embellished with lyrical vignettes and musings that veer fluidly from almost childlike innocence to seasoned, darkly comic wit, with brilliant and unexpected twists at every turn. Andrew's 2005 studio album, The Mysterious Production of Eggs, was a breakthrough for him both commercially and artistically, with exuberant praise from a wide variety of sources, and a dramatic increase in attendance at his unique live performances, moving up from clubs to packing the likes of Los Angeles' Henry Fonda, San Francisco's Great American Music Hall and concluding with a sold-out two-night homecoming at Chicago's Logan Square Auditorium. Similar word of mouth built to a steady simmer amongst fans from NPR, bloggers, high school students, and Parisian aficionados to an avid and expanding set of live-tape traders worldwide, as Andrew made good on the London Independent's prediction: "Bird could do for independent American music what Tarantino did for American cinema."

MENOMENA - MUSCLE N' FLO

ARTIST / BAND: MENOMENA
SONG (MP3): MUSCLE N' FLO
ALBUM: Friend and Foe
FILE UNDER: Punk / Funk / Crunk
LABEL: http://www.barsuk.com/

INFO: Menomena are an experimental rock band from Portland, Oregon, made up of Brent Knopf on guitar, keyboards, glockenspiel; Justin Harris on bass, guitar, baritone sax and alto sax; and Danny Seim on percussion. All members of the band share singing duties.
Danny Seim also has a side project began in the late 90's titled Lackthereof.
They self-released their first album, I Am the Fun Blame Monster!, in 2003 and had the album released nationwide by FILMguerrero in 2004 (I Am the Fun Blame Monster is an anagram for The First Menomena Album). In 2005 Menomena released Under an Hour, an album of instrumental music written for and performed with Monster Squad, an experimental dance company based in Portland. In August of 2006, Menomena signed with Barsuk Records although the band still maintains a relationship with their old label, FILMguerrero. It was stated that FILMguerrero would still be involved in their old catalog and possibly with future vinyl releases[1].
Menomena released their next album in 2007, titled Friend and Foe. It was released to relative critical acclaim -- while some websites like Pitchfork Media praised the album for its effective modular pop[2], others like PopMatters criticized it for presenting a sense of feigned maturity[3].
The band's name was chosen for "the way it rolls off the tongue, sexually, or something" [4] and has no specific meaning, although it is often assumed to refer to the Piero Umiliani song "Mah Nà Mah Nà", a staple of The Muppet Show. A recent audioclip from SpotDJ had Brent stating that the band name was a contraction of the words "Men" and "Phenomena". This is most likely a joke.

DAVID KILGOUR - BBC WORLD

ARTIST / BAND: DAVID KILGOUR
SONG (MP3): BBC WORLD
ALBUM: The Far Now
FILE UNDER: Indie / Folk Rock / Psychedelic
LABEL: Merge Records

INFO: As a teenager in the late 1970's David Kilgour and his brother Hamish, inspired by the independent do-it-yourself spirit of punk rock and the simple yet dissonant songwriting of Lou Reed and Bob Dylan, formed The Clean in their hometown of Dunedin. The Clean went on to become one of New Zealand's most popular and most respected bands. Their legend as one of the founding fathers of one of the most influential "scenes" in underground music quickly spread to all corners of the globe ...................................................................... In 1992, Kilgour struck out on his own and recorded his first solo CD (Here Come The Cars), which received much critical acclaim and is a bona-fide New Zealand classic. Two more solo LPs followed, Sugar Mouth in 1994 and David Kilgour and The Heavy Eights in 1997. Kilgour followed that up in 2002 with his fourth solo LP, A Feather In The Engine. ........................................................................ His fifth album, Frozen Orange was a slight departure for Kilgour - not so much in style as in method. The idea for the record came about as David was touring the States with both the Clean and solo in late 2001 and early 2002. The 2002 tour in support of A Feather In The Engine featured David as the opening act for his American label Merge mates Lambchop. For the tour, Kilgour recruited several

MANIC - CHEMICALS FOR CRIMINALS

ARTIST / BAND: MANIC
SONG (MP3): CHEMICALS FOR CRIMINALS
FILE UNDER: Alternative / Shoegaze / Ambient
LABEL: SURETONE / INTERSCOPE

INFO: Manic’s music has a throbbing pulse, and a sharp current of energy runs through it. But the music is as hooky as it is angular and smart. Their songs are expansive, with lots of textures and layers.Musically, Manic admit they are not here to cater or to kowtow to radio. They just want to write songs with plenty of depth, breadth and scope, songs that they can replicate live. “We are a fairly tech-heavy band,” says Zane Smythe (guitar), shedding light on his band’s sound. “We use a lot of gear. Our bassist has a keyboard. Our drummer has a keyboard next to him. I have a keyboard. We have a laptop, guitar, and vocal effects, etc, so the music is on the technical side. We’re big fans of stuff that’s sparse but not thin. When we record, we throw everything into the pot and start reducing, and what’s left is what we play live. We’re fans of music that is thick. We’re not pretentious, but we think we do a really good job at representing ourselves and our songs when we play them live.”Indeed, Manic aren’t your average LA band. They are doing things their way, remaining true to their independent music ethos.

DEERHOOF - +81

ARTIST / BAND: DEERHOOF
SONG (MP3): +81
ALBUM: Friend Opportunity
FILE UNDER: Indie
LABEL: www.killrockstars.com

INFO: Deerhoof was formed in 1994 by Rob Fisk and Greg Saunier. At the time, both were members of the band Nitre Pit and would meet before practice to work on their own material, with Fisk playing bass and Saunier on drums. It was Fisk who came up with the name "Deerhoof". The two played at the Yo Yo A Go-Go festival in Olympia, where Kill Rock Stars founder Slim Moon discovered them. In 1995, Kill Rock Stars released the band's first 7", "Return Of The Wood M'lady". In 1996, Satomi Matsuzaki moved from Tokyo to San Francisco. A member of the band Caroliner (whom Matsuzaki met while they toured Japan) played her the 7" and she decided to join Fisk and Saunier, who were looking for a vocalist at the time. Her first experience with the band was singing into a strange microphone Fisk had constructed out of paper mache and walkman headphones. Like most members in the history of Deerhoof, she had no formal music training (Saunier studied music and sang in barbershop quartets as a child and went to the Oberlin Conservatory of Music).

AIR FRANCE - BEACH PARTY

ARTIST / BAND: AIR FRANCE
SONG (MP3): BEACH PARTY
ALBUM: On Trade Winds
FILE UNDER: Pop / Latin / Bossa Nova
LABEL: http://www.sincerelyyours.se/

INFO: Sure to trip up the easily confused, Air France have nothing to do with Air (French band). They're actually from Sweden. And they don't sound much like Air, even though this track (which samples Lisa Stansfield's "All Around The World") is breezy, a bit retro, and owes something to the sepia-toned melancholy happiness of AM radio.

BRIGHT EYES - TOURIST TRAP

ARTIST / BAND: BRIGHT EYES
SONG (MP3): TOURIST TRAP
ALBUM: Four Winds [EP]
FILE UNDER: Indie
LABEL: http://www.saddle-creek.com/

INFO: With the once revolving line-up of musicians settled on the three constants of Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis and Nate Walcott, Bright Eyes spent much of 2006 in the studio working on their follow-up to the acclaimed simultaneous releases Digital Ash in a Digital Urn and I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning. LEE HAZLEWOOD - IT'S NOTHING TO ME

ARTIST / BAND: LEE HAZLEWOOD
SONG (MP3): IT'S NOTHING TO ME
ALBUM: Cake or Death
FILE UNDER: Rock

INFO: For over half a century, LEE HAZLEWOOD has proven himself to be one of the most ingenious, inspired and impressively stubborn sons-of-a-bitch the music industry has ever seen. His career – a word that HAZLEWOOD himself would scorn – has seen him take on almost every aspect of the music industry – a word that HAZLEWOOD himself would choke on – and come out on top every time.

PATRICK WOLF - BLUEBELLS

ARTIST / BAND: PATRICK WOLF
SONG (MP3): BLUEBELLS
ALBUM: The Magic Position
FILE UNDER: Pop
LABEL: www.loogrecords.co.uk

INFO: Patrick, now age 23, grew up in South London and began refining his precocious talents at the age of eleven when he escaped from school troubles by late night experimentation in the corners of his bedroom with his violin, voice and car boot sale organs on a four-track tape recorder. Although beginning his musical education a few years before with rigorous violin lessons and church choirs, it wasn't until Patrick's obsession for early twentieth-century electronics - which lead to a study and construction of a Theremin - that Patrick really developed a strong ambition to create new and innovative music and that has power and emotion enough to communicate directly to the heart.

THE WESTERN STATES MOTEL -POWERLINES

ARTIST / BAND: THE WESTERN STATES MOTEL
SONG (MP3): POWERLINES

You can find it on the "WALK THE LINE" special edition dvd. Their recently-released debut album has been receiving great reviews and the band looks forward to lots of live performances in 2007. This is sunshine pop, no doubt, but it looks inwards as well. For any person who's ever been anywhere, or that's heading some place, The Western States Motel is your soundtrack. Even if you're just standing still, they might just set you on your way.

They headlined First Avenue's new band showcase in January and were courted by local indie outlet Afternoon Records this summer to release Broken Hearts. Pop is pop. It's hard to resist. NICOLE ATKINS - CAROUSELLE

ARTIST / BAND: NICOLE ATKINS
SONG (MP3): CAROUSELLE
ALBUM: Bleeding Diamonds
FILE UNDER: Psychedelic / Alternative / Folk Rock
LABEL: Columbia Records

INFO: The sound of Nicole Atkins' Bleeding Diamonds EP, which serves as a handy introduction to her upcoming, feature-length Columbia Records debut, is like the opening scene to one of her favorite directors David Lynch's Blue Velvet. Underneath the sunny blue skies, immaculately manicured suburban homes and their bright green lawns lies a forbidding black hole of danger, violence and death.

That is the world described by this 27-year-old singer/songwriter from Neptune, a New Jersey shore town just down the coastline from Asbury Park, where she grew up in an idyllic childhood, teaching herself to play a Grateful Dead song on the guitar she found in the attic once owned by an uncle who died when he was 13. Her father turned her on to blues artists like Jimmy Reed, allowing Nicole to sit in on sessions with local musician friends. She played for three years with the North Carolina alt-country band Los Parasols before making a name for herself as a solo performer on New York City's anti-folk scene.

THE VELVET TEEN - IN A STEADMAN SPRAY

ARTIST / BAND: THE VELVET TEEN
SONG (MP3): IN A STEADMAN SPRAY
ALBUM: Cum Laude
FILE UNDER: Indie
LABEL: Slowdance

INFO: They say the first thing to go is your memory, and The Velvet Teen has been in a constant state of amnesia since day one. From the dazzling pop of Plus Minus Equals, to the soaring, harmony-drenched ballads and one-two uppercut rock punches of Out Of The Fierce Parade, and throughout the masterfully incisive psychemotional beauty of Elysium, The Velvet Teen has always forgotten what came before, painting new, self-rooted masterpieces with each fresh step. Something has been brewing withThe Velvet Teen. Something is always brewing, but this time its circuitous. Computers have been freezing up; home electronics have been breaking down. Pinball machines give fashion advice and snarling dogs sing lullabies..

MY TEENAGE STRIDE - TO LIVE AND DIE IN THE AIRPORT LOUNGE

ARTIST / BAND: MY TEENAGE STRIDE
SONG (MP3): TO LIVE AND DIE IN THE AIRPORT LOUNGE
ALBUM: Ears Like Golden Bats
FILE UNDER: Indie / Pop / New Wave
LABEL: Becalmed Records

INFO: "Buoyed by the same brand of upbeat moodiness that characterized many an old Smiths song, "To Live and Die in the Airport Lounge" is a sparkly bit of catchy but inscrutable guitar pop.." -jeremy, fingertipsmusic "I play at incredulous only because this is exactly what I want to hear in a promo copy. If you write about music, you are familiar with the dread-cum-anxiety brought on by one of those Media Mail envelopes (always, always that Office Gold hue). That particular malady dissipated, however, when I heard the opening chords of “To Live and Die In The Airport Lounge” from the band’s forthcoming third album Ears Like Golden Bats on the UK label Becalmed. I thought of, in the words of Fitchett, “Great Pop” and “Big Pop.”"
