I have listened to Poses so many times that I imagine big broadway production numbers with each of the songs (set, costumes, choreography, I'm not kidding). I worship him like a pagan god (ess). I curtsy deeply at his flip-flopped feet. His voice sends me. The velvety motor that is his vibrato is so bewitching it should be outlawed.I could go on and on.

No longer content with appropriating pop-music themes, as he had done to great effect in Sixteen Candles, Hughes decided to commission his first original soundtrack, hiring members of Devo, Japan, and the Psychedelic Furs to write new songs to bridge the gap between Hughes's teenage fairy tales and Waters's twisted narratives.Locked in a Los Angeles warehouse, the supergroup worked on the Polo Club soundtrack for one year, emerging with the finished masters only to discover that Hughes and Waters had been distracted by other projects and canceled the film. Although the guitar-heavy ballad "15 Minutes," a sleazy anthem called "NY Lady," and their trippy cover of Huey Lewis and the News' "I Want a New Drug" had great potential as singles, record labels passed on the projectwho would buy a soundtrack without a movie?Demoralized, they hid the tapes and swore never to speak of the project again. Two decades later, an OM Records employee discovered the soundtrack in an Encino storage locker and convinced Hughes and Waters that, movie or no movie, the world was ready for Polo Club. INFO: The Shin's debut full-length, 2001's Oh, Inverted World, was a stunner; resoundingly well-received and landing itself on numerous year-end best-of-lists. MOJO placed it at ..14 of the year and commented, "This quartet from Albuquerque, New Mexico captured our hearts this summer with their pristine pop perfection." And, Seattle's The Stranger went even further with, "...a referential, brilliant record which had better blow up, or the world has forgotten what pop music is all about." As far as we're concerned it did blow up - seems there's still some hope for the world and its conception of pop music. Since that first record, singer/songwriter/guitarist James Mercer and drummer Jesse Sandoval moved from Albuquerque to Portland, OR and bassist Neal Langford was replaced with Dave Hernandez (ex-Scared Of Chaka), who played bass on the stand-out track from the first record, "New Slang." Chutes Too Narrow, their heavily anticipated follow-up, was recorded in James' basement home studio, with later mixing assistance from Phil Ek (Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, David Cross, Les Savy Fav, etc.). And, with 10 songs, clocking in at just over 30 minutes, the new record is a brief yet entirely scintillating glimpse at chiming, reflective and perfectly skewed pop innovation.

INFO: Sonya Cotton is a musician and artist currently living in Princeton, NJ. She sings songs about love, dogs, birds, large bodies of water, and other mysterious things. Her self-released debut album, Baltimore Trees, features eight original compositions performed with Ernest Christian Kiehne. Come October, Sonya and Chris will begin recording her sophomore album at a cabin in the deep, dark woods, overlooking a beautiful lake, in Connecticut (the Nutmeg State; State Bird: the Robin; State dog: undecided). They’ll be graciously assisted on piano by her brother, Alex Cotton.
Sonya has also contributed harmonies to the songs of Ernest Christian Kiehne, Chris Maher, and the National Lights.

In january 2005 is firts official album came out by a partnership between the brazilian labels midsummer madness and Volume 1. It´s distributed in Argentina by Muy Moderna Records. But in the years to come, they got so many tour offers that when they turned down 90% of them, they still managed to tour Europe 3 times and then South America...so they were basically in this 'weird-hiatus-like' state.
the band regrouped in fall 2005 and on september 26th will be releasing our 7th album, 'whatever's got you down.' 12 songs we put alot of love and work into, hope you like it. we also hope to see you on tour then, please keep an eye out for tour dates, because we will be going everywhere.

INFO: Memphis debut, I Dreamed We Fell Apart was described as the perfect late-summer album in August 2004. I Dreamed was a collage of melodies and sound. melding pedal steel guitar with perfectly pitched electronic beats, fusing jazzy reverberations and the occasional thunderstorm to pop song formats. Like its music, Memphis is also study in contrasts as Torquil Campbell and Chris Dumont, the Canadian-American duo, pour their diverse and musical backgrounds and their longtime friendship into Memphis unique sound. Back in the early Nineties, Chris Dumont, originally from North Carolina, had a fortuitous meeting in New York City with Torquil Campbell. The two formed a band with Campbells childhood friends Chris Seligman, James Shaw, and Adam Marvy and for a few years they worked on their song craft playing small clubs and Irish pubs around the city. Later, Seligman and Campbell formed Canadian sweetheart pop group Stars, Shaw went on to become one-half of synth-duo Metric, while Dumont dreamed his days away to the sounds of the carousel in Central Park. With the indie success of Stars there would, it appears, be little time for another musical project, especially one that re-visited the lambent sounds of youth and relied on far-flung friends; but one summer Campbell invited Dumont to Vancouver BC and Memphis was born. Campbell, who writes pop songs with a poets eye for detail and an actors ear for cadence, would weave his words to Dumonts clean guitar hooks and bossa nova harmonics.

INFO: I’m tempted to criticize Birmingham, UK’s Fields for being yet another band with a generic, un-Googleable one-word name but in a strange way I can’t quite articulate, it’s a very fitting name for what they do - listening to them, it somehow just feels right.
They were in town this past Monday for a small gig at Revival that didn’t seem to be part of any particular tour. They were also up against a couple of other high-profile shows that same night and not having had much in the way of publicity leading up to it, there was only a modest audience in attendance but probably better than expected. I was there because though I had not heard a note of the band before the previous Friday, what I did sample of their website impressed the hell out of me after just one listen. Plus locals The Coast were added as support so I was fairly assured that it’d be a good show.

For those not yet in the know: Danny Seim, Justin Harris, and Brent Knopf perform, sing, arrange, create, and destroy Menomena songs. They've released two previous albums on the excellent Portland indie label Film Guerrero: i am the fun blame monster (which garnered a rare 8.7 rating from Pitchfork and inspired them to say: "Menomena are a hugely creative band, and they've managed to make an album that's extremely accessible yet entirely unconventional"), and under an hour, which consists of three lengthy instrumental compositions and is the soundtrack to a modern dance performance choreographed by a friend. They're not like other bands.

This young fearsome fivesome peppers their electro-inspired songs with four-part harmonies/chants (that's where the "Bohemian Rhapsody" comes into play) that surely sounds light-years ahead of 2006. This must be the new shit, because I've never heard anything like it before. They are a band designed to dance to, and sure enough, most people were. But they aren't all antics. Make no mistake, Apes and Androids are tight. They all rocked as one unit, led by the powerful Bowie-esque pipes of their sassy singer. I definitely want to check them out again, and highly suggest you do too.

The LA that surfaces in the music of Midnight Movies is a hazy, mysterious thing—warm, eerie nights, and ghosts of great actors haunting a would-be desert town. The music itself is the landscape’s appropriately ghastly space-rock soundtrack, reminiscent of outfits like Yo La Tengo and Stereolab, and fronted by Nico sound-alike Angeleno Gena Oliver, the band’s drummer and principal songwriter.

CIC has since expanded to a quintet: Kenny Hopper, Jesse Reiner, Jarrett Wrenn (also among the founders of At the Drive-In), Tim Soete (of the Fucking Champs), Matt Waters and Jonathan Skaggs.
