EXITMUSIC

ARTIST / BAND: EXITMUSIC

MP3: "The Sea"

ALBUM: From Silence

FILE UNDER: Indie

LABEL: secretly canadian

INFO: Sometimes, listening to Exitmusic, it's hard to tell exactly whether the goosebumps you're getting are from the parts that are chillingly beautiful and melodic or the ones that are aching and guttural. Or further, the ones that are creepily sparse and disembodied. The New York City duo -- Aleksa Palladino and Devon Church -- doesn't care when the chill runs down your spine, they just hope their music provokes some kind of primal feeling. Church explains, "It's like what Aleksa sings at the end of 'The Sea': 'And you turn your back to life... Oh, sorrow.' We want our music to confront people in a gentle but powerful way, to make them feel something."

Today The Moon, Tomorrow The Sun

ARTIST / BAND: Today The Moon, Tomorrow The Sun

MP3: We Were Wild

ALBUM: WILDFIRE

FILE UNDER: Electro / Indie / Rock

LABEL: Greyday Records

INFO: I’ve always been a bit ambivalent about Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun. On the one hand, their dance-infused electro rock tunes have always been well-constructed and easy on the ears. On the other, their music has always had an air of timidity about it, lacking in bite and urgency. But all that may change with the release of their upcoming full-length, Wildfire, due out May 7th. The band recently posted the album’s opening track and lead single, “We Were Wild,” to their Soundcloud page and while all the familiar elements remain — the pulsating synths, the punchy percussion, the fuzz-ridden bass and effects-laden guitars — there is a tenacity to the track, both in the music and in Lauren Gibson’s vocals, that has been lacking in prior efforts. There’s also an aura of bigness to the song, a swelling grandiosity that feels neither forced nor overbearing. It remains to be seen what the rest of Wildfirehas in store for us, but if the rest of the album can measure close to “We Were Wild,” you can count me among the believers.

THE PAUSES

ARTIST / BAND: THE PAUSES

MP3s: Go North / Hands Up

ALBUM: A Cautionary Tale

FILE UNDER: Electronica / Indie / Rock

LABEL: New Granada

INFO: Despite amassing a following, scene status, and praise from regional press right out of the gate, Orlando indie-rock band The Pauses released their debut album A Cautionary Tale after only about, oh, TWO YEARS of existence. The official excuse is something about wanting do to things "properly." So they saved money through a successful Kickstarter campaign (a marvel since their fans' bank accounts have a perfectly inverse relationship with their obvious wealth in taste) spurred by a cute handmade video (http://vimeo.com/10712285) and headed up to Baltimore to record this bad boy with the legendary J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines), even enlisting three-quarters of the dude's own band. His wife too? Sure, why not.

The band had raised the bar to dizzying heights on their first album – with "YOY" they have risen even higher.

Downpilot

ARTIST / BAND: Downpilot

MP3: Edge of the Flood

ALBUM: New Great Lakes

FILE UNDER: Americana / Folk Rock / Indie

LABEL: Tapete records

INFO: For the follow-up to the acclaimed They Kind of Shine (including songs featured on television series "One Tree Hill"), Hiraga sequestered himself on Seattle’s nearby Vashon Island in a spacious woodland studio and set to writing and recording, far from the distractions of the city. Although several Downpilot alumni would later make cameos, the feeling from the start was that this would be a more intimate, solo-style album.
With his arsenal of self-made recording equipment and surrounded by an extensive collection of vintage keyboards and other instruments, the multi-instrumentalist recorded ideas in a spontaneous, stream-of-consciousness fashion. After a solitary week the foundation was laid for the 4th Downpilot LP: New Great Lakes.

Big Tree

ARTIST / BAND: Big Tree

MP3: "This Fall"

ALBUM: This New Year

FILE UNDER: Indie / Folk / Psychedelic

LABEL: s/r

INFO:Once upon a time, five fresh-faced and naive students ventured to Sarah Lawrence College, where each one imagined all of his and her hopes and dreams would come true.  As fate would have it, all five enrolled in the jazz program where they learned about tritone substitutions and how to hold their whiskey.  Each night the music building would stay open until 2am, where they would practice their instruments until security locked up the building and sent them home.  Never ready to say good night, the five friends would stay up a few hours more listening to records and sharing ideas in a smoky dorm room where the inspiration never ran dry.

Sub Swara

ARTIST / BAND: Sub Swara

MP3: You (Sub Swara remix)

FILE UNDER: electronic, rmx

LABEL: s/r

INFO:

New Tune! We just remixed “You” by fellow Brooklyn duo,CREEP, featuring the vocals of Nina Sky. This one is on the haunting slow-burn tip and we had a great time working on it.
There was a lot of homegrown sound sculpting on this one as much of the rhythm pallet comes from household items like soap bottles, cardboard boxes, coffee grinders and compressed air. Always fun to geek out in the lab.

FILE UNDER: Indie

LABEL: Hard Bark

INFO: “A collection of stories detailing battles for hope and companionship. Women from the perspectives of lone travelers, felons and family men- their execution sways from folk-ish, Townes Van Zandt-like ballads to fuller Flying Burrito Brothers-inspired, laid-back country rock.” Andrew McAllister sings with a voice characterized by Three Imaginary Girls as “…a country-esque Damien Jurado” and by Seattle’s Stranger as “…a younger more innocent Jeff Tweedy".  These are just a few of many descriptions of Andrew McAllister’s music.
