GEORGIE JAMES

ARTIST / BAND: GEORGIE JAMES

SONG (MP3): NEED YOUR NEEDS

ALBUM: Places

FILE UNDER: Rock / Classic Rock / Indie

LABEL: saddle creek

INFO: When Q And Not U disbanded in 2005, drummer John Davis turned to his singer-songwriter friend, Laura Burhenn, to forge something new. At first the two seemed like an unlikely pair. John had spent the past seven years releasing records with his bandmates on Dischord and touring the world. Laura, on the other hand, had been releasing solo projects on her own label, Laboratory Records, and playing smaller venues on the east coast and in L.A. How could they find common ground?

TIGERCITY

ARTIST / BAND: TIGERCITY

SONG (MP3): ARE YOU SENSATION

ALBUM: Pretend Not To Love

FILE UNDER: Pop / Rock / Disco House

INFO: Tigercity is a POP BAND. We love POP MUSIC. This is why we are getting SMOOTHER AND SMOOTHER. Maybe, one day, our smoothness will allow us to live on AN ISLAND. Maybe we will call it TIGERCITY. It will be the smoothest of all islands...
Tigercity was formed in Northampton, MA in the fall of 2004. By summer 2005, Tigercity had themselves a DIY, bedroom electronics-style demo and started working with long time friend/engineer-producer Al Carlson (Brazilian Girls). In two months, Tigercity and Al Carlson molded the process-heavy demo tracks into what became the Tigercity EP (Forge Records). One of the tracks, Time Card appeared on the VICE Magazine CD/DVD Vol. 1 sampler in February, 2006.

FOREIGN BORN

SONG (MP3): INTO YOUR DREAM

ALBUM: On The Wing Now

FILE UNDER: Melodramatic Popular Song / Ambient / Folk Rock

LABEL: Dim Mak

INFO: FB began in San Francisco during the late summer months of 2003, only to quickly relocate down south to Los Angeles. We recorded and self-released our first 12" single "We Had Pleasure" b/w "Escape" in 2004. A few months later came our debut EP "In the Remote Woods" via StarTime International Records. Before, during and after some months of US and UK touring with Rogue Wave, Jason Collette, Cold War Kids, Giant Drag and We Are Scientists, (mostly on vegetable oil we'll have you know!) we found time to record our first full length album "On the Wing Now" in the Winter of 2005/Spring of 2006. We sold about 500 or so self released, hand-made copies during a few of the aforementioned tours, but have now officially released the album via Dim Mak Records as of August 21st, 2007! We're already working on new songs, day-dreaming of recording our next album and will definitely be hitting that road again soon in the near future.

The album’s melodic layered guitars, vulnerable vocals, taut over-driven bass, and propulsive drumming introduced the band’s distinct but accessible pop sound to the public. Their second album, American Matador was released in 2000. Through it, the band showed a willingness to experiment with increasingly complex song structures and inspired instrumental breaks while managing to keep their sound firmly rooted in the indie-rock idiom. read more from the source...

THURSTON MOORE

ARTIST / BAND: THURSTON MOORE

SONG (MP3): FRI/END

ALBUM: Trees Outside the Academy

FILE UNDER: Experimental

LABEL: Ecstatic Peace

INFO: It’s Thurston’s first solo outing since 1995’s Psychic Hearts. Of course, Thurston’s been releasing records here, there and everywhere mostly in the context of rowdy and rambunctious noise/improv escapades but this new one is killer diller SONGS! Unlike Psychic Hearts’ skeletal trio rock, this new jammer, 12 years post, has a far fuller bouquet of sonic depth and proves this Sonic dude to have a very real songwriting life outside of the legendary Sonic Youth (of which he is a founding figure, duh).

ALBUM: Charmed & Strange

FILE UNDER: Alternative / Indie / Pop

LABEL: Field Recordings

INFO: Imagine a record that matches the leftfield edge of Beck or Radiohead with the kind of sure-footed pop hooks Justin Timberlake's people would write a blank cheque for. A record which vividly conjures the life of an insightful outsider, set to the dark, loping rhythms of Massive Attack or Portishead. A record built around a voice that's as sweetly expressive as it is richly soulful. Then imagine that every single sound of it, including the bass & the drums, is performed by one man on his amazingly versatile guitar. That record is Charmed & Strange.

INFO: The L.A.-based foursome's debut full-length Beartrap Island stands as a wildly diverse combination of both supremely hard-hitting and finely-shaded exploratory tracks. Like its rather portentous title might suggest, the album takes the listener on a tour of a mysterious and ultra-moody place, where they will find scenes of both utter exhilaration and fearsome foreboding. It's a place that might, just might, refer in passing to the band's adopted hometown of Los Angeles.

Golden Death Music

ARTIST / BAND: Golden Death Music

SONG (MP3): The Unmaking

ALBUM: Ephemera Blues

FILE UNDER: Psychedelic / Electronica / Other

LABEL: Helmet Room Recordings

INFO: Golden Death Music does more than glint, his music truly shines like the sun! I’m more than impressed, his latest homemade album Ephemera Blues is by far the best guitar-orientated music that I have heard since Elliot Smith’s Either/Or (RIP), although it sounds nothing like him really, so ignore all that. Instead I’ll take the radical step of saying what Ephemera Blues does sound like. In short, it sounds much like the artist’s name itself: it is golden death music. It is like death, but not horror show death or anything ghastly like death metal death, but something more ancient, more spiritual, more intangible - not something to be afraid of, but something to embrace, something blissful: an opium dream - something golden.

ALBUM: Kate Tucker & The Sons of Sweden

FILE UNDER: Indie / Pop / Rock

INFO: She sounds like a cross between Beth Orton and Neko Case. Thanks to a move from Ohio to Seattle, now everybody is starting to take notice.

Kate Tucker and the Sons of Sweden's debut record is starting to gain a lot of momentum, thanks to the slow motion soundtrack that is the track "Faster Than Cars," a song that gently delivers a soft riff on the electric guitar. Soon, a slow/mid tempo feel sucks you in as the band shuffles through a seductive beat.

The new record was recorded in a barn with Ryan Hadlock who has produced Blonde Redhead, The Gossip and The Octopus Project.

Fellow Seattle native Damien Jurado also shows up for background vocals on the track, "In the End."

Maritime

ARTIST / BAND: Maritime
SONG (MP3): Be Unhappy
ALBUM: Heresy and the Hotel Choir
FILE UNDER: Indie / Pop / Rock
Label: Flameshovel / Grand Hotel van Cleef / Bad News

INFO: There’s this song by Ned’s Atomic Dustbin (remember them?) whose title I always liked: “The Old New Un.” I always figured that it meant they’d taken an old idea and made something fresh from it; then again, maybe it’s about fish and chips. Anyway, I heard that song not long ago, and it made me think about Maritime. Dan Didier, who plays the drums, said something to me—and he said it sincerely, not giving me some marketing spiel—about how Heresy and the Hotel Choir, his band’s third album, really feels like their first. Why is that, you ask? There’s a reason, and it doesn’t discount the contemplative, mellow chewiness of 2004’s Glass Floor or the comparatively brash rockingess of 2006’s We, The Vehicles. It’s just to say that those records (and subsequent tours) were inspired by the energy of flux, and this one is about solidity. Glass Floor took tentative steps away from Didier and singer-guitarist Davey von Bohlen’s old band, the damn-near-legendary Promise Ring (remember them?), adding former Dismemberment Plan bassist Eric Axelson to the mix. Slow chaos followed: Somewhere in there, Axelson left; other people came and went, all amicably.

The Forms

ARTIST / BAND: The Forms

SONG (MP3): Knowledge in hand

ALBUM: The Forms

FILE UNDER: Indie / Experimental / Rock

LABEL: Threespheres

INFO:"Making this album was a pretty painful process," admits Forms frontman Alex Tween when asked about the band's follow-up to 2004's incredibly well-received, Pitchfork-approved debut Icarus—and, to be honest, his comment is a bit of an understatement. Recorded consecutively over a 50-day period in Illinois with Steve Albini (Nirvana, the Pixies) at Electrical Audio and assisted by Greg Norman (Built To Spill, Pelican) at Great Western Record Recorders, the process tested the New York act's limits of the band's sonics and sanity in ways that most of us couldn't even begin to imagine. "We couldn't afford to take one day off because we'd already paid for the studio time; all for 30 minutes of music, which works out to 35 seconds a day," frontman Alex Tween explains, "but we're really proud of how it came out."
