THE SIX PARTS SEVEN - STOLEN MOMENTS

ARTIST / BAND: THE SIX PARTS SEVEN
SONG (MP3): STOLEN MOMENTS
ALBUM: These Friends of Mine
FILE UNDER: Indie / Experimental / Pop
LABEL: http://www.suicidesqueeze.net/

INFO: "The thing about Six Parts Seven is we're fans of music rather than musicians first," explains guitarist/bassist/arranger Allen Karpinski, who - alongside his drumming brother Jay Karpinski, guitarist Tim Gerak and bass guitarist Mike Tolan - makes up the musical core of 6P7. "None of us are trained or anything like that; this band has always been a work in progress and over time we've just gotten better at assimilating all the things we love into the music." Abstractly drawing from mid-90's Touch and Go Records roster, the band have thoroughly recontextualized their influences to create something wholly unique with Casually Smashed To Pieces. While the latest disc formidably features trumpet and clarinet, fans will also recognize it as a return to form to the band's early days as a duo in many ways. "I think a lot of instrumental albums and songs are overly long," Allen admits. "I don't see any point in recording a 68 minute album at this point." In fact, Casually Smashed To Pieces is the band's shortest disc to date, clocking in at just the length of a sitcom (including commercials). "You can listen to the whole thing without being exhausted - and hopefully it'll leave the listener wanting more."However, none of these details would matter if not for what was actually encoded on the disc. Like the soundtrack to a heartbreaking film that never existed, the songs on Casually Smashed To Pieces are simultaneously beautiful and completely unpredictable. "Knock At My Door" features gorgeous guitar chords, layered arrangements and a twangy undercurrent; "Confusing Possibilities" features dueling melodic lines, shifting dynamics and sub-bass tones that transport the band's music into uncharted frequencies; and "Stolen Moments" showcases the singing horns, unorthodox chord voicing and crescendos so gradual you'll wonder how you got from point A to point B.Let's be honest though, instead of mapping out each track for you, you're probably best off putting the disc in your CD player and hearing it for yourself. Because like all great music, there's an element to Casually Smashed To Pieces that can't be conveyed via adjective or analogy. "Our music should be enjoyed , it shouldn't be intellectualized," Allen summarizes more succinctly than this writer ever could. "It can be, I guess, but it should be enjoyed first. Music should just be enjoyed."

ROSIE THOMAS - MUCH FARTHER TO GO

ARTIST / BAND: ROSIE THOMAS
SONG (MP3): MUCH FARTHER TO GO
ALBUM: These Friends of Mine
FILE UNDER: Indie / Folk / Alternative
LABEL: Singalong Records

INFO: One night in suburban Detroit, a twelve-year-old Rosie Thomas lay sleepless in her bed, obsessively dwelling on what she perceived to be her lack of life purpose. Then, well after 2 AM, it suddenly hit her. She sprung up and raced down the hall. “Daddy, Daddy, I know what my mission in life is,” Rosie exclaimed, poking her father. “I just want to entertain people.”Fast forward one decade later, recently transplanted to Seattle and frustrated with her decision to attend theater school, Rosie sat one night voicing her disappointment to new friend, singer-songwriter Damien Jurado, when he promptly turned to her and said, So, Rosie came to the city, trading the stiff route of producer-led studio recording from her previous album for the modest confines of a Brooklyn apartment with Sufjan and another songwriter friend, Denison Witmer. They set no deadlines or official recording schedule. The group of friends simply set up one or two microphones in a bedroom, living room, or kitchen and captured the songs as they happened.“Whether you are a musician, painter, or whatever, there is a passion that sometimes gets lost because all of the sudden you have to clock-in or have deadlines. I sort of wanted to get back to that time when I played music for nothing,” Rosie says.

CYANN & BEN - LET IT PLAY

ARTIST / BAND: CYANN & BEN
SONG (MP3): LET IT PLAY
ALBUM: Sweet Beliefs
FILE UNDER: Indie / Rock
LABEL: http://www.everrecords.com/

INFO: Those who like their music to be served in bitesize chunks should back away now, and those for whom an artist's value is based upon how many convictions they have received from the local constabulary should move on, because there's nothing to see here. But those for whom music is a joy, a world in which to marvel at the patterns that sound can draw in one's mind, will want to settle in for the long haul. Sweet Beliefs, the third album by Paris based Cyann & Ben, is about "the whole", the experience, and it demands your attention right from the outset. It's an epic and yet intimate album that draws upon a wide variety of influences, giving the space rock template a Gallic makeover by adding a much needed romantic grandeur. But because Cyann & Ben's Paris is not the one you see in Amelie – it's dirty, dark and stressful as much as beautiful – Sweet Beliefs, with its multi-layered and ambitious sweep, sounds as unsettling as it is irresistible.
The seeds for the enigmatically, altruistically named Cyann & Ben were sown in the cold, grey, rainy city of Charleville- Mezieres. A small provincial French town on the border with Belgium, it was the birthplace of the legendary French poet Arthur Rimbaud. But even he, locals are forced to concede, tried to run away four times by the time he was 17. Now it is due to be the site for the trial of Michel Fourniret, a self-confessed serial killer who claims to have murdered up to 20 people in France and Belgium between 1987 and 2001. Three of Cyann & Ben's four members – Cyann (keyboards, vocals), Ben (vocals, guitars), and Charlie (drums, samplers, synth) – grew up there, experimenting with music in various configurations before finally making good their escape to Paris.
Cyann & Ben as an entity, however, was formed in spring 2001, soon after the two started working together, and they were joined by Charlie and Loic (guitars, keyboards) for their first studio recordings. The chemistry that developed, especially when the four of them left the studio and took to the stage, was such that they soon started working and writing together regularly. Within a year they were signed to the currently dormant Gooom Records – former home to M83 – and not long afterwards released their debut album, Spring, to wide acclaim in their homeland. A second album, Happy Like A Tree, followed in late 2004, consolidating their reputation and, despite limited distribution, won a small army of fans across Europe. Both albums were also released in the US by Locust Music, home to – amongst others – releases by Espers, Matmos, Allen Ginsberg and Timothy Leary.
With their third album, however, Cyann & Ben have significantly refined their sound. The nine songs on Sweet Beliefs form a collection of noble but gritty beauty, its escapist enchantment anchored by a human frailty and vulnerability. But they also stand up for themselves: immerse yourself in tracks like "Words", with its inexorable journey towards its Pete Townsend conclusion; "Sparks of Love"'s gravity-defying magic; the heartbreaking intimacy of "Somewhere In The Light Of Time" or the tension of the album's title track as it draws towards an inevitable crescendo. As a suite of songs, its slow burning pleasures take a while to reveal themselves, but the majesty within is worth your patience. Memorably described by Manget as "a slow motion hurricane ripping apart your temporal lobe", Cyann & Ben's music offers an otherworldly grandeur: psychedelic, noble, fragile, pastoral, experimental and incandescent all at once, the sound of Sonic Youth reared on Pink Floyd's lost masterpiece Soundtrack To 'More', or maybe Low picking Mogwai to pieces.
Sweet Beliefs was largely recorded in Paris at Vogue Studios, home of the legendary French label Vogue, where legions of French stars of the 60s and 70s, including Francoise Hardy, cut many of their classic albums. After being closed and left to decay for many years it was recently renovated and Cyann & Ben were amongst the first to work there. Sweet Beliefs, like the studio and indeed Paris itself, is steeped in musical history but no stranger to hard times. It acknowledges the fact that wherever you are – Charleville-Mezieres or Paris – there is no such thing as a perfectly happy ending, but the efforts to find one can still be vastly rewarding. That is the secret of its success, and its conviction, honesty and optimism give us all a reason to believe…

ANDREW BIRD - HERETICS

ARTIST / BAND: ANDREW BIRD
SONG (MP3): HERETICS
ALBUM: Armchair Apocrypha
FILE UNDER: Rock / Folk / Indie
LABEL: Fat Possum

INFO:. Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist and lyricist Andrew Bird picked up his first violin at the age of 4. Actually, it was a Cracker Jack box with a ruler taped to it, and the first of his many Suzuki music lessons involved simply bowing to the teacher and going home. He spent his formative years soaking up classical repertoire completely by ear so when it came time for a restless teen-ager to make the jump to Hungarian Gypsy music, early jazz, country blues, south Indian etc., it wasn't such a giant leap. It's fitting that now, though classically trained, he has instead opted to play his violin in a most unconventional manner, accompanying himself on glockenspiel and guitar, adding singing and whistling to the equation, and becoming a pop songwriter in the process. Since beginning his recording career, Andrew has released nine albums: six studio albums, both solo and with his former group the Bowl of Fire, and three live albums. The soon to be released Armchair Apocrypha will bring the tally to ten. Armchair Apocrypha, to be released March 20 on Fat Possum, was recorded mainly in Minneapolis at Crazy Beast Studios (Ben Durrant) and Third Ear Studios (Tom Herbers). A cast of collaborators was drawn from the surrounding music scene: Drummer and keyboard player Martin Dosh, singer Haley Bonar, bassist Chris Morrissey, and multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Ylvisaker (who, along with Dosh, now features in Andrew's live lineup) added their talents to the album, which was mixed at the famed, haunted Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. It is an album that sums up where Andrew's career has taken him, yet is completely very much of his artistic present. The album opens with "Fiery Crash," which Bird describes as a superstitious incantation to protect him from plane crashes ("just a nod to mortality before you get on the plane"). As the album progresses, songs of "Dark Matter" ("do you wonder where the self resides, is it in your head or between your sides, and who will be that one who will decide its true location?), "Heretics" and "Plasticities" are sung with humor and lightness the belies their lyrical depth. "Scythian Empire," amid lush pizzicato violin, considers an obscure corner of history and its lost civilizations, and apocalyptic horsemen. And so it goes through to the final notes of "Yawny at the Apocalypse," varied and stunning musical tapestries embellished with lyrical vignettes and musings that veer fluidly from almost childlike innocence to seasoned, darkly comic wit, with brilliant and unexpected twists at every turn. Andrew's 2005 studio album, The Mysterious Production of Eggs, was a breakthrough for him both commercially and artistically, with exuberant praise from a wide variety of sources, and a dramatic increase in attendance at his unique live performances, moving up from clubs to packing the likes of Los Angeles' Henry Fonda, San Francisco's Great American Music Hall and concluding with a sold-out two-night homecoming at Chicago's Logan Square Auditorium. Similar word of mouth built to a steady simmer amongst fans from NPR, bloggers, high school students, and Parisian aficionados to an avid and expanding set of live-tape traders worldwide, as Andrew made good on the London Independent's prediction: "Bird could do for independent American music what Tarantino did for American cinema."

MENOMENA - MUSCLE N' FLO

ARTIST / BAND: MENOMENA
SONG (MP3): MUSCLE N' FLO
ALBUM: Friend and Foe
FILE UNDER: Punk / Funk / Crunk
LABEL: http://www.barsuk.com/

INFO: Menomena are an experimental rock band from Portland, Oregon, made up of Brent Knopf on guitar, keyboards, glockenspiel; Justin Harris on bass, guitar, baritone sax and alto sax; and Danny Seim on percussion. All members of the band share singing duties.
Danny Seim also has a side project began in the late 90's titled Lackthereof.
They self-released their first album, I Am the Fun Blame Monster!, in 2003 and had the album released nationwide by FILMguerrero in 2004 (I Am the Fun Blame Monster is an anagram for The First Menomena Album). In 2005 Menomena released Under an Hour, an album of instrumental music written for and performed with Monster Squad, an experimental dance company based in Portland. In August of 2006, Menomena signed with Barsuk Records although the band still maintains a relationship with their old label, FILMguerrero. It was stated that FILMguerrero would still be involved in their old catalog and possibly with future vinyl releases[1].
Menomena released their next album in 2007, titled Friend and Foe. It was released to relative critical acclaim -- while some websites like Pitchfork Media praised the album for its effective modular pop[2], others like PopMatters criticized it for presenting a sense of feigned maturity[3].
The band's name was chosen for "the way it rolls off the tongue, sexually, or something" [4] and has no specific meaning, although it is often assumed to refer to the Piero Umiliani song "Mah Nà Mah Nà", a staple of The Muppet Show. A recent audioclip from SpotDJ had Brent stating that the band name was a contraction of the words "Men" and "Phenomena". This is most likely a joke.

DAVID KILGOUR - BBC WORLD

ARTIST / BAND: DAVID KILGOUR
SONG (MP3): BBC WORLD
ALBUM: The Far Now
FILE UNDER: Indie / Folk Rock / Psychedelic
LABEL: Merge Records

INFO: As a teenager in the late 1970's David Kilgour and his brother Hamish, inspired by the independent do-it-yourself spirit of punk rock and the simple yet dissonant songwriting of Lou Reed and Bob Dylan, formed The Clean in their hometown of Dunedin. The Clean went on to become one of New Zealand's most popular and most respected bands. Their legend as one of the founding fathers of one of the most influential "scenes" in underground music quickly spread to all corners of the globe ...................................................................... In 1992, Kilgour struck out on his own and recorded his first solo CD (Here Come The Cars), which received much critical acclaim and is a bona-fide New Zealand classic. Two more solo LPs followed, Sugar Mouth in 1994 and David Kilgour and The Heavy Eights in 1997. Kilgour followed that up in 2002 with his fourth solo LP, A Feather In The Engine. ........................................................................ His fifth album, Frozen Orange was a slight departure for Kilgour - not so much in style as in method. The idea for the record came about as David was touring the States with both the Clean and solo in late 2001 and early 2002. The 2002 tour in support of A Feather In The Engine featured David as the opening act for his American label Merge mates Lambchop. For the tour, Kilgour recruited several

MANIC - CHEMICALS FOR CRIMINALS

ARTIST / BAND: MANIC
SONG (MP3): CHEMICALS FOR CRIMINALS
FILE UNDER: Alternative / Shoegaze / Ambient
LABEL: SURETONE / INTERSCOPE

INFO: Manic’s music has a throbbing pulse, and a sharp current of energy runs through it. But the music is as hooky as it is angular and smart. Their songs are expansive, with lots of textures and layers.Musically, Manic admit they are not here to cater or to kowtow to radio. They just want to write songs with plenty of depth, breadth and scope, songs that they can replicate live. “We are a fairly tech-heavy band,” says Zane Smythe (guitar), shedding light on his band’s sound. “We use a lot of gear. Our bassist has a keyboard. Our drummer has a keyboard next to him. I have a keyboard. We have a laptop, guitar, and vocal effects, etc, so the music is on the technical side. We’re big fans of stuff that’s sparse but not thin. When we record, we throw everything into the pot and start reducing, and what’s left is what we play live. We’re fans of music that is thick. We’re not pretentious, but we think we do a really good job at representing ourselves and our songs when we play them live.”Indeed, Manic aren’t your average LA band. They are doing things their way, remaining true to their independent music ethos.

DEERHOOF - +81

ARTIST / BAND: DEERHOOF
SONG (MP3): +81
ALBUM: Friend Opportunity
FILE UNDER: Indie
LABEL: www.killrockstars.com

INFO: Deerhoof was formed in 1994 by Rob Fisk and Greg Saunier. At the time, both were members of the band Nitre Pit and would meet before practice to work on their own material, with Fisk playing bass and Saunier on drums. It was Fisk who came up with the name "Deerhoof". The two played at the Yo Yo A Go-Go festival in Olympia, where Kill Rock Stars founder Slim Moon discovered them. In 1995, Kill Rock Stars released the band's first 7", "Return Of The Wood M'lady". In 1996, Satomi Matsuzaki moved from Tokyo to San Francisco. A member of the band Caroliner (whom Matsuzaki met while they toured Japan) played her the 7" and she decided to join Fisk and Saunier, who were looking for a vocalist at the time. Her first experience with the band was singing into a strange microphone Fisk had constructed out of paper mache and walkman headphones. Like most members in the history of Deerhoof, she had no formal music training (Saunier studied music and sang in barbershop quartets as a child and went to the Oberlin Conservatory of Music).
