INFO: Having grown up in the exuberant chaos of the Canadian folk music community, the members of Spiral Beach - Daniel and Airick Woodhead, Maddy Wilde and Dorian Thornton - spent their formative years hanging around backstage jams at festivals across the country. As a group these young performers create edgy and inventive pop music that draws inspiration from the Beatles, Talking Heads and Radiohead. Their distinctive sound combines a strong groove with clever harmonies. Previous gigs include....NXNE, Ottawa Folk Festival, Blue Skies Festival, City Roots-City Wide plus dates at the Drake, Gladstone, Cameron House, Sneaky Dee's and the Reverb. They are already booked for festivals next summer. Spiral Beach has two previous EPs, and have just released their new self-titled CD.

A modest, home-recorded labour of love quietly released on Beck’s own 13 Clouds label that quickly found an audience of enthusiastic and supportive critics, musicians and indie-rock aficionados in his hometown, Hollow managed to amass a small army of devotees on at least a couple of continents over the next two years.

INFO: It’s all about timing. The Playwrights are a majestic and angular indie-rock band from Bristol, England, with a strong pop edge. Formed in 2001 by friends and long-time collaborators Aaron Dewey (vocals) and Benjamin Shillabeer (guitar) the duo initially demoed, over the course of a year, a collection of homespun experimental indie-pop songs in bedrooms and office blocks in Bristol and beyond. Not wishing to re-record the songs or to lose momentum, the pair set about getting a band together and subsequently released the ‘finished’ recordings as a clutch of singles and an album on Benjamin’s acclaimed label Sink and Stove in 2003. This early material started receiving excellent reviews - from the likes of the UK’s mainstream music press (The Independent, Rocksound and Losing Today amongst others) to more grassroots platforms; as word-of-mouth responses found the The Playwrights namechecked and playlisted on webzines, blogs and radio shows across Europe, Canada and the USA. The album ‘Good Beneath The Radar’ was included in the late John Peel’s lists that year and he played the band’s first single ‘Television In Other Cities’ back in April 2003. However the success of these recordings wasn’t matched by the progress of the new band, which saw a series of frustratingly shifting line-ups and personnel changes, as the right balance of personalities and instrumentation was sought.

New City Chicago named Art Contest album of the year and positive reviews poured in; Venus Magazine and the L.A. Times among them. After a self-booked two week jaunt to the west coast, the band decided to leave their day jobs behind and devote their full attention to the band. The remainder of 2003 was spent touring across the entire U.S., fully funded by the band themselves while away from home for months at a time. Expectedly, their savings widdled down to nothing. No big deal.

INFO: They Live By Night formed in Gothenburg during the fall of 2004. Christofer, Martin and Joel had played together in the 5-piece indie rock havoc The Shift for a couple of years and when the band broke up they decided to stick together. Christofers childhood friend (and ex-bandmate from the emo band Isobel) Robin joined them. The idea was to start something completely new and they did, with Joel taking the role of lead singer for the first time and Robin, used to being a guitarist, playing keyboards.Things took off quick. The music just flowed out and filled the cramped rehearsal room. A demo was recorded in february of 2005 (featuring Truth or Dare, Night Out and House of Addicts). In may They Live By Night recorded their first video (Truth or Dare) with director Jerry Boman and a gang of helpful friends, played their first three shows (in a gallery, an empty lecture hall and, finally, in a small club) and got a gig at the Arvika festival.

INFO: legend has it that the Paper Cranes were born when home-recording afficianado (reclusive nerd) Ryan McCullagh met Mark Vondrasek (guitar), John Quissy (bass) and James Watson (drums) who had previously played together in the Victoria BC garage-punk outfit, The Cause. The Biblically named trio took up their instruments behind Ryan M and formed the present-day Paper Cranes. Within months the Paper Cranes became a staple band of the Victoria live music circuit, entertaing both close friends and parents alike. Talk about a genre that produces a lot of unmemorable drivel: From the last few years, its standout records are either not really lap-pop (Octet's Cali-pop-smitten Cash and Carry Songs) or just exceptionally bad (Styrofoam's Linkin Park-smitten Nothing's Lost). But No P. or D. was different. It had happy hooks and melancholy hooks and lush quasi-acoustic instrumentation, and it sounded just as good on a sunny day as on a rainy reflective one. The German duo of Stephanie Bцhm and Micha Acher (the Notwist) substituted layered melodies for stacks of blippy folderol, creating a record free of the superfluous electronic baggage and nonessential sounds this stuff often swims in.

INFO: The band formerly known as Fletcher has cast aside its original nametag, taking its new handle from Edwin Abbott’s 19th century social commentary Flatland, an exploration of life in two dimensions. But Colour Revolt is far from two-dimensional, eschewing Fletcher’s familiar sonic assault of unorthodox song structures and time signatures for a more melancholic though equally guitar-driven aesthetic of the post-grunge Southern gothic. The band’s soundscape reflects the literary heritage of their native Oxford, Miss., channeling the jagged emotionality and moral ambiguity of the locale’s forefathers, William Faulkner and Barry Hannah. Another facet of the small university town’s life is music, serving as the home to the neo-blues pioneering of Fat Possum Records and in-demand Sweet Tea Recording studio. In fact, a batch of songs Colour Revolt had recently tracked caught the attention of Clay Jones, a Sweet Tea engineer who mixed the last Elvis Costello and Modest Mouse albums. With Jones on board to mix the record, the band’s self-titled debut EP was released on the small Mississippi-based indie outfit Esperanza Plantation in late December 2005. In 2005, Colour Revolt, whose five members are all college students, played almost 80 shows in 18 different states (without failing out), including an appearance at Paste Magazine’s Rock’n’Reel Festival alongside Low and Over the Rhine.

Philipp Bückle and Nils Quak lived in the same city for ages, probably hanging around at the same events but never realizing who the other one actually is. When it came to an unexpected meeting the idea of a collaboration manifested itself quite fast.First of all, an enormous amount of beer was consumed while discussing ways and means of a shared artistical view. Then computers and other devices got connected adapting the ideas from before.Both artists are not unknown to the world of contemporary electronic music. Philipp for example released under his moniker Teamforest on Morr Music and Aesthetics, Nils as nq on Progressive Form and I Can’t Break You Break Records.So it seems that they needed to strive far away (Nils to Japan and the UK – Philipp to the USA and France), just to realize, that someone with a similar state of mind was living just around the corner.

INFO: New Delhi FM is a project that evolved out of other projects in the past. It originally started as a threepiece consisting of Sandro Boege, Paul Krege and Marc Hцfling.Today, after a long period of quite loose cooperation with Paul, Sandro is the only real member of New Delhi FM as Pauls focus went on to more club-oriented Music (in which he's doing a great job, btw. check Schallschnelle and look for "Ellwart und Krege").The intention behind New Delhi FM is basically to create tracks with strong atmospheres, and make the listener want to travel 'through' the sounds and let him, even after listening to a track for the 10th time, discover something new in the music. It's a very personal and intimate sound, but it's all still about the music, not about who's making it. Some have asked if there were any messages in the tracks itself. Well, of course there are, but they aren't necessarily political, religious or whatever. They are there because they need to be there. Same goes for the origin of a lot of the sounds used in the music. Sometimes they are just tiny snippets of field recordings used as percussive elements and sometimes they are even complete conversations that can be heard if listened very closely.It's the world that makes us what we are, so why shouldn't we take what influences our daily life and make something out of that?So much for now.
