PORTUGAL THE MAN

Artist / Band: PORTUGAL THE MAN
Song (MP3): AKA M80 THE WOLF
Album: Waiter: You Vultures!
File Under: Indie Rock
Label: fearless records
Info: What is Portugal. The Man? Portugal is a country, not a man. Can a country consider itself a man? Are you confused yet? To clarify, Portugal. The Man is a band and no, they are not from Portugal; they’re a devastatingly handsome and talented group of guys hailing from the arctic wastelands of Wasilla, Alaska. The band’s name is based on the idea of David Bowie’s “bigger than life” fame. They wanted the band to have a bigger than life feel but didn’t want to name it after one of their members. “A country is group of people,” guitar player and vocalist John Gourley explains.“With Portugal, it just ended up being the first country that came to mind. The band’s name is Portugal. The period is stating that and The Man states that it’s just one person.” The name has more personal meaning as well. Portugal. The Man was also going to be the name of a book that Gourley had planned to write about his father and his many adventures. The members of Portugal. The Man (with the exception of Jason Sechrist who was born in Portland, OR) were all born and raised in Alaska. Gourley grew up in various parts of Alaska, even spending a year in the woods, living in a cabin his parents had built that was powered by a generator and had no phone. An unconventional upbringing to say the least, Gourley was surrounded by wilderness and A LOT of dogs. His parents ran the Iditarod (the biggest of all dog races, which his father had run four times.)read more from the source...

THE WALKMEN

Artist / Band: THE WALKMEN
Song (MP3): CHRISTMAS PARTY
Album: CHRISTMAS PARTY
File Under: Indie Rock
Label: marcata
Info: The Walkmen are five friendly New Yorkers who have played rock music diligently since the 5th grade. Now aged 23 to 28, they've performed under their current moniker for a little over a year. All five originally hail from Washington, D.C. where they attended the same high school and played loud music in several bands. Over the years, and in their many ensembles, they've experimented with punk, noise, a lot of "garage" sounds, ska, and some decent rock.
Although initial press gave the Walkmen positive reviews, it seemed to focus too much on the former notoriety of three of its members?all of whom played in the much hyped, short-lived Jonathan Fire*Eater. This is understandable as the Walkmen had only played a handful of shows before StarTime International released their debut 4-song EP. Touring extensively since its release in June, the boys have made it as far west as Minneapolis, Minnesota, and as far east as London, England. With the release of their debut full length "Everybody Who Pretended to Like Me Is Gone," the Walkmen may now be judged strictly on their own merits.
After Jonathan Fire*Eater imploded Walter, Matt, and Paul rounded up enough investors to rent a Harlem industrial space, and convert it into a 24-track analog recording studio. Dubbed "Marcata Recording", the new space became the birthplace, home, and virtual sixth member of the Walkmen. Joining with ex-Recoys, Walter's cousin Hamilton and his friend Peter (who had for years been slaving away in the East Village for spots at the Continental and Luna as the Recoys), the lineup was complete by the summer of 2000. Over the course of the next year the band sedulously wrote and recorded late in the evenings after work. It was hot in the summer and cold in the winter. While adjusting to their new space and equipment, the band engaged in much experimentation with sound.
Their first show took place at Joe's Pub in the East Village in September of 2000. Onto the tiny stage the band lugged an upright piano, a bass cabinet that was taller than the bass player, three amplifiers, an organ, a lap steel, two tape machines, three guitars, and a set of drums. The show was a great success, so they decided to stick together. Since then the boys have remained dedicated to their instrumentation, and even got their hands on an over-sized, rotting upright in London which nearly ruined the trip (one show was on the third floor).
During this time, a few of the most helpful influences included: Bruce Springsteen, the Pogues, the Cure, Bjork, the Smiths, Joy Division, Neil Young, and New Order. But their way is mostly uncharted. The music is not driven by any one instrument, and each recording has its own sound and style. Primarily piano and organ provide the basis for each song, with dashes of a variety of guitars and tapes. The bass holds a steady, booming foundation, and the drums fluctuate from minimal to down right furious. The vocals range from strong and long-held highs to reserved falsettos and lazy lows. The songs can be light and playful, or huge and atmospheric.

JEANS TEAM

Artist / Band: JEANS TEAM
Song (MP3): LAST CHRISTMAS
File Under: Minimal Christmas
Label: louisville records
Info: Jeans Team start in 1995 as a duo constisting of Franz Schütte and Reimo Herford. They found the legendary GALERIE BERLINTOKYO in Berlin Mitte and play their first official shows. For these shows Reimo and Franz performed to a preproduced video, they act as the companion volume. The 45 minute video ‘Baby' (1996) is Jeans Team’s first release.
1997 Gunter Kreis and Henning Watkinson complete the band and the virtual company is needless. Now Jeans Team become a quartet of flesh and blood. The eponymous luminous advertising is dismantled from a street corner in Berlin Wedding and becomes the illumination for Jeans Team live shows.
After a number of songs on compilations by 'Spielkreis' and the 'Bungalow'-label follows the first tour through Germany. To release both singles 'Hi Fans' and 'Ein Atom' Jeans Team found their own label 'Nadel Eins' in 1998. Each single includes three punk-instrumentals. Yet another tour and gigs in Paris and Amsterdam follow.

JENNY LEWIS

Artist / Band: JENNY LEWIS
Song (MP3): RISE UP WITH FISTS!
Album: rabbit fur coat
File Under: Indie
Label: team-love
Info: Jenny Lewis might just be my new favorite woman in rocknroll. This indie-pop-rock powerhouse has a lot to be proud of and yet there isn't a pretentious bone in her body.
Firstly, there's her main project, Rilo Kiley, a Los Angeles–based foursome that's about to become your new favorite band on Omaha's Saddle Creek label. And then there's the Postal Service, that charming electro-pop outfit that's been played out of speakers everywhere from Urban Outfitters to your local supermarket (Lewis contributes vocals on the Postal Service's debut album, Give Up).
It's hard to escape Jenny Lewis these days (not that you'd want to), but it's going to be nearly impossible in the coming months.
Her summer 2003 tour took her and Rilo Kiley across the United States, hitting one sold-out venue after another, and she will soon visit Europe with the Postal Service. Then there's a new Rilo Kiley album to write, friends and family to be with, and picking out perfectly coordinated vintage outfits for the stage. Somehow, Jenny found a few minutes to answer my questions in a recent phone interview.

MAN MAN

Artist / Band: MAN MAN
Song (MP3): VAN HELSING BOOMBOX
Album: Six Demon Bag
File Under: Indie
Label: acefu
Info: Somewhere between New York, Philadelphia, and the Holy Mountain, MAN MAN fastens together shellac, perfume, feathers, dirt, and blood, knits together Screaming Jay Hawkins, Etta James, 80s pop, Iggy Pop, Soda Popinski, Mexican funeral marches, religious cults, bad luck, and two-headed wolves to wrangle out something entirely else. With themes ranging from loss to love to mayhem and back, SIX DEMON BAG's narrative structure once again straddles the blurry line between order and chaos, the outsider elements from their debut THE MAN IN A BLUE TURBAN WITH A FACE sharpened into alternate universe pop hits; an album just as comfortably suited to the workplace desktop as to the Lord of the Flies campfire, post Piggy. Gravel-throated Ringmaster Honus Honus has assembed a motley crew of likeminded shamans to help perform Man Man's many song exorcisms; sweaty, sexy swamp boogies rest easily alongside no-wavey guitars, melancholy funeral dirges, french new wave soundscapes, and exiled river-bed gypsy jams. At the core of the everything is a pop heart, albeit a wounded one, but nonetheless a heart that beats strong and confident and will not be satisfied until you are a full-on converted follower. read more from the source...

SYLVAIN CHAUVEAU

Artist / Band: SYLVAIN CHAUVEAU
Song (MP3): NEVER LET ME DOWN AGAIN
Album: Down to the Bone - An Acoustic Tribute to Depeche Mode
File Under: Indie Acustic
Label: Cargo Records
Info: After several years as a rock singer and guitarist, Sylvain Chauveau stops in 1998 and starts to play on his own with three principles to follow : to stay as close as possible to the obviousness of silence, to use a sound only when it's absolutely necessary to the whole part, and to seek some roots in his personal and cultural history.

COMET GAIN

Artist / Band: COMET GAIN
Song (MP3): JUST ONE SUMMER BEFORE I GO
File Under: Indie
Label: kill rock stars
Info: British indie-pop quintet Comet Gain formed in early 1993, influenced as much by the riot-grrrl movement as by the music of the girl-group era; comprised of singer Sarah Bleach, singer/guitarist David Feck, guitarist Sam Pluck, bassist Jax Coombes and drummer Phil Sutton, the group signed to the legendary Wiiija label to debut on the split EP Some Hearts Are Paid to Lie, followed in 1995 by the full-length Casino Classics. Comet Gain's next release, The Gettin Ready e.p., preceded the release of their second LP, 1997's Magnetic Poetry (known as Sneaky in the U.S.); Bleach, Pluck, Coombes and Sutton all exited the line-up soon after to record as Velocette, leaving Feck to assemble an all-new roster for 1999's Tigertown Pictures, issued on Kill Rock Stars. The next record, 2002's Réalistes, featured a guest appearance from riot-grrl innovator Kathleen Hanna. read more from the source...

INTERPOL

Artist / Band: INTERPOL
Song (MP3): PDA
Album: Precipitate EP
File Under: Indie
Info: Boasting the namesake of Europe's beloved international police, New York City-based Interpol presents a new, four song EP called, the Precipitate EP. Interpol have played with Mogwai, And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, The Delgados, and Arab Strap, which has earned them residence with the foremost indie-club mainstays in NYC and, as evidenced by the NME, a top-notch spot within the burgeoning NYC rock scene.Following the success of the Chemikal Underground EP, the Precipitate EP is a collection of outtakes from a single recording session. "Precipitate" was originally included on the now out of print FukdID #3 EP on Chemikal Underground. read more from the source...

THE STROKES

Artist / Band: THE STROKES
Song (MP3): JUICEBOX
Album: First Impressions of Earth
File Under: Rock
Label: RCA
Info: Why does this 3:17 second song, with its hard-driving "Peter Gunn"-ish intro, seem so hard to get a handle on, intermittently harsh and irritating, and yet so simultaneously compelling? It's not just because singer Julian Casablancas is singing without the filter he put his voice through to create the band's trademark sound on their first two CDs; and it's also not just because he spends a bit of time actually sort of screeching. read more from the source...

MAXIMUM JOY

Artist / Band: MAXIMUM JOY
Song (MP3): WHITE & GREEN PLACE
Album: Unlimited (1979-1983)
File Under: Post Punk
Label: Crippled Dick Hot Wax!
Info: Crippled Dick is happy to announce a compilation of rare and hard to find 7", 12" and some album tracks of Bristols MAXIMUM JOY!
Formed in 1979, Bristol band, Maximum Joy was originated by Janine Rainforth (singer /violin/clarinet) and Tony Wrafter (saxophonist/trumpeter, previously of another Bristol band, Glaxo Babies) . In the wake of the infamous Pop Group and taking from the hot bed of musical influences driving the Bristol scene at the time – punk, reggae, funk, soul and Jazz- the band developed their own unique version of the post-punk Bristol sound. Sometimes soothing, occasionally challenging, their groove combined funk, punk, soulful jazz and wild impro with daring and, often, panache. Other founder members were Charlie Llewellin (drums, previously of Glaxo Babies) , John Waddington (guitar, previously of Pop Group) and Dan Catsis (bass, previously of Pop Group and Glaxo Babies).

TELLARO

Artist / Band: TELLARO
Song (MP3): WE'RE GONNA RIDE
Album: TELLARO
File Under: Melodic Indie
Label: Second Recordings
Info: In the summer of 2001 Francesco Cantone (Twig Infection), Carmelo Sciuto (Jerica's) and Tazio Iacobacci (Keen Toy, Pola) decided to pool their talents in Tellaro to concentrate on the quieter recesses of their previous musical projects. On their first, selftitled EP the three Sicilians deliberately allow song-writing to take centre stage, with arrangements reduced to the bare minimum of acoustic guitar, bass, drums and Cantone's charismatic voice, only interspersed with the odd electronic snippet or piano section. A subdued, optimistic melancholy suffuses these songs, a broken romanticism that nevertheless allows touches of an unhealthy threat to bubble just underneath the surface. read more from the source...

CAT POWER

Artist / Band: CAT POWER
Song (MP3): THE GREATEST
Album: THE GREATEST
File Under: Indie
Label: matador records
Info: Chan Marshall stops time. She sits at a piano or lays her guitar across her lap, and whether it’s a noisy club overflowing with drunks or a coffee house full of laptoppers, Chan Marshall draws all the attention in the room and makes the world stop spinning. As Cat Power, Marshall’s music seems to rise from nowhere, envelop the room, then vanish; listeners know they’ve been hit by something but they’re not sure what.

AMANDA ROGERS

Artist / Band: AMANDA ROGERS
Song (MP3): DAILY NEWS
Album: DAILY NEWS
File Under: Singer Songwriter
Label: Second Recordings
Info: Amanda grew up in Syracuse, NY. From the age of six she received classical piano training and later went on to explore almost every musical endeavour offered by her school Ð marching bands, musicals, choirs, jazz ensembles...At 15 she decided to start writing her own songs. Amongst the avid fans of her first, self-produced CD are a. o. Dashboard Confessional's Chris Carrabba and Jonah Matranga (Onelinedrawing). Together with these and other emo/hardcore/punk rock bands Amanda has played countless of live shows and attracted the attention of New York-based label Immigrant Sun who went on to release last year's "The Places You Dwell".This year, besides recording "Daily News", she has already toured Canada, Europe and the East Coast of the US. In November Amanda will return to Europe for another extensive tour. read more from the source...

RUNDFUNK

Artist / Band: RUNDFUNK
Song (MP3): EAGLE EYE
Album: Kings & Queens EP
File Under: Indie Pop
Label: west side fabrication
Info: Stockholm-based four-piece Rundfunk is a recent addition to the West Side family. Rundfunk are Petri Laukka (drums percussion), Stefan Olsson (vocals), Daniel Sefbom (bass guitar) and Per Wilhelmsson (guitar, piano and backing vocals). They have played together since about 1998 and they have previously released a single and album on tiny Stockholm label Moonkrack. 2004 sees the release of a new single and album, both entitled "Kings Queens". Rundfunk play electronic pop music, making use of synthesizers, beat boxes, samplers, but also of old-school equipment such as guitars and drums. Their songs always have great melodies, intriguing lyrics and great rhythms. Rundfunk make no attempt to categorize their own music, but a couple of names that other people have mentioned are The Stone Roses, Missy Elliott and Magnetic Fields. Rundfunk are also a whopping live act that can not quite decide whether to be noisy, loud and punky or an all-out funk outfit. Therefore they attempt to do both things at the same time, with great results. read more from the source...

BEANGROWERS

Artist / Band: BEANGROWERS
Song (MP3): THE FAREWELL PARTY
Album: DANCE DANCE BABY
File Under: Indie
Label: Zomba
Info: Beangrowers are from Malta. Most American listeners, who have a hard time acknowledging the existence of bands from anywhere other than the US, Canada or the UK, will smile and nod upon receiving this information, primarily because only one in five Americans under the age of thirty knows that Malta is a country. And I'm being charitable there.

DEERHOOF

Artist / Band: DEERHOOF
Song (MP3): WRONG TIME CAPSULE
Album: THE RUNNERS FOUR
File Under: Indie Rock
Label: Kill Rock Stars

Info: The first thing you notice about The Runners Four is its simplicity - an unadorned recording of the acclaimed quartet in their Oakland practice room. Without the layers of production heard on Milk Man and Green Cosmos, you start to understand the mania that follows their live shows: Deerhoof is a shockingly good rock band. They play with a primal abandon and molten group chemistry that remains untamed since the band's early days. Still, at nearly twice the length of any of their previous albums, The Runners Four is more complex and challenging than anything they've ever recorded. After a few listens it dawns on you: This is more than rock, this is a wholesale rewrite of the rock and roll dictionary, a massive, sweeping totality, the product of a seemingly endless collective imagination. The Runners Four: a quartet of racers, chasers, messengers, even smugglers, gleefully smashing through outmoded boundaries, bearing gifts of sonic contraband. Deerhoof is poised yet again to surprise their fans and divide the critics. Historians of the future who will want to investigate music of the early 21st century may find that Deerhoof was the most iconoclastic band of this generation.

KATHLEEN EDWARDS

Artist / Band: KATHLEEN EDWARDS
Song (MP3): IN STATE
Album: BACK TO ME
File Under: Rock
Label: Zoe Records
Info: Kathleen Edwards was born in Ottawa, Canada, in 1979, the daughter of foreign service parents who played piano and guitar in their spare time. At five, Edwards began to study classical violin, which continued through her early teens. At that point, the Edwards family moved overseas. Removed from the influence of mainstream North American pop music, Edwards delved into her older brother's collection of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and early Tom Petty records. After high school, Edwards landed back in Ottawa, singing and playing her guitar in local clubs and networking with other musicians in the scene. read more from the source...

BELLE AND SEBASTIAN

Artist / Band: BELLE AND SEBASTIAN
Song (MP3): ANOTHER SUNNY DAY
Album: THE LIFE PURSUIT
File Under: Indie Pop
Label: matador records
Info: A band that takes its name from a French children's television series about a boy and his dog would almost have to be precious, and to be certain, Belle & Sebastian are precious. But precious can be a damning word, and Belle & Sebastian don't have the negative qualities that the word connotes -- they are private but not insular, pretty but not wimpy; they make gorgeous, delicate melodies sound full-bodied. Led by guitarist/vocalist Stuart Murdoch, the seven-piece band has an intimate, majestic sound that is equal parts folk-rock and '60s pop, but Murdoch's gift for not only whimsy and surrealism, but also for odd, unsettling lyrical detail keeps the songs grounded in a tangible reality. read more from the source...

TELLARO

Artist / Band: TELLARO
Song (MP3): 1985
Album: SETBACK ON THE RIGHT TRACK
File Under: Indie
Label: 2nd Rec
Info: In the summer of 2001 Francesco Cantone (Twig Infection), Carmelo Sciuto (Jerica's) and Tazio Iacobacci (Keen Toy, Pola) decide to pool their talents in Tellaro to concentrate on the quieter recesses of their previous musical projects. The band rehearses at home during merry weekends made of 4 course dinners and hectolitres of beer. Tazio tries to elaborate the speedy "nervous" KT drums, Francesco to learn how to sing in tune, and Carmelo to skip his compulsive obsession for 6/8. In march 04 2nd rec puts out their debut CDep "Tellaro". Nobody knows why they still call it "Greatest hits".

MIA DOI TODD

Artist / Band: MIA DOI TODD
Song (MP3): PLANTING
Album: THE EWE AND THE EYE
File Under: Singer Songwriter
Label: Zen City
Info: Mia Doi Todd is from Los Angeles. She has released four albums of her own genre-defying music. The first three, the ewe and the eye (1997), come out of your mine (1999), and zeroone (2001) were solo acoustic recordings. Her last album, The Golden State on Columbia Records (2002), was produced by Mitchell Froom and explored a wider sonic landscape. Mia has also collaborated with many rock/electronica/hip-hop musicians, contributing her unique voice to the tunes of Dntel, Beachwood Sparks, DJ Nobody, Adventure Time, Frausdots, Folk Implosion, The Mission, Saul Williams, Prefuse 73 and more. read more from the source...

JOSE GONZALES

Artist / Band: JOSE GONZALES
Song (MP3): STAY IN THE SHADE
Album: VENEER
File Under: Singer Songwriter
Label: Imperial Recordings
Info: Veneer is the debut album by Swedish-born minstrel José González…already a certified quiet-is-the-new-loud legend in his native Sweden. Who needs bells and whistles (outside of a forlorn trumpet and some subliminal percussion) when songs are this strong and the voice is this perfect? When all that you need to hold an audience in blissful rapture is what you can balance on a barstool? Jose’s sensual, sensitive, powerful vocals and supernaturally gifted guitar playing truly recalls artists like Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, Hayden, and Mark Kozelek. He’s earned the accolades by writing incredible songs and staying true to his heart, keeping the songs barebones simple.

VEGA

Artist / Band: VEGA
Song (MP3): THE LOVE SONG OF HAROLD AND MARION
Album: For Retarded Lovers
File Under: Indie pop
Label: Decoder Records
Info: Vega was formed in Stockholm in 1998 by singer and songwriter Nils-Erik Sandberg and double bass player Johan Berthling with the intention to write beautiful songs and perform them in a hauntingly slow fashion. The first single "How I feel/Hotel II" was reviewed as "a soundtrack for a funeral" by a Swedish rock magazine. read more from the source...

THE FRICTION BROTHERS

Artist / Band: THE FRICTION BROTHERS
Song (MP3): DON’T LEAVE ME ALONE TONIGHT
Album: The Summer Of Friction
File Under: Indie
Label: sfr records
Info: Hailing from Portland, OR, The Friction Brothers bring you tales of down-and-out characters, elliptical commentaries and chronicles of lovesick hallucinations, forming and impressionistic song cycle about summer on their release, The Summer of Friction. Drawing favorable comparisons to a remarkably disparate range of influential musical acts (for one such example, a fan remarked, “…you sound like the Velvet Underground and Creedence Clearwater Revival – at the same time…”), The Friction Brothers do not rely on any single reference point while creating their music; instead, they seem to be a receptacle into which people pour their hopes and dreams for what the next great rock band should sound like. read more from the source...

METAL HEARTS

Artist / Band: METAL HEARTS
Song (MP3): – SOCIALIZE
Album: SOCIALIZE
File Under: Indie
Label: suicide squeeze
Info: Growing up is a bitch; it is just that simple. It’s a heartbreaking mix of bullies, break-ups, and braces. Finding your voice in that mess of hormones is a daunting task that irks many of us through our adult life. Yet somehow in the thick of it all, Baltimore duo and avid shoplifters Metal Hearts have musically found a way to reassemble and redefine those woes into a record that is as refined as it is raw. read more from the source...

ELEFANT

Artist / Band: ELEFANT
Song (MP3): THE CLOWN
Album: THE BLACK MAGIC SHOW
File Under: Indie Rock
Label: Hollywood Records
Info: You might expect a certain kind of attitude from a band such as Elefant. Touring with Interpol and getting your videos played by M2 after only one short year together might breed a certain kind of egotistic monster. I half-expected to meet a pack of aloof, cocksure rock stars busy hatching plans for an egregious concept album about witches. Instead, I sat down to a late dinner with a group of sane, workmanlike young musicians who oozed sincerity like their burgers did chili sauce.

DECORATION

Artist / Band: DECORATION
Song (MP3): INTERCOM
Album: I Tried It, I Liked It, I Loved It
File Under: Indie Rock
Label: SL Records
Info: Decoration aim to grip your emotions with a simple recipe of shimmering, interfering guitars and a reflection on real life; three parts Bolton, one part London and now based mainly in the capital, they make soaring atmospheric pop in the classic indie tradition. Hailed for the last 12 months as one of the best unsigned bands in the UK, their unreleased songs still somehow have the knack of getting regular radio play at both home and abroad, including Sessions for the late great John Peel and Huw Stephens on Radio One, and a number of local radio stations across the country.

BAUMER

Artist / Band: BAUMER
Song (MP3):
Album: COME ON, FEEL IT
File Under: Indie Pop / Power Pop
Label: Astro Magnetics
Info: Baumer’s story begins late ‘03 in Columbia, SC with guitarist Kenny McWilliams, who was working in his garage-studio on a low-key solo project. McWilliams invited Nate Boykin down to his studio to try out some vocals over his project; the results were favorable and the two soon began collaborating and recording demos. However, what started as mellow acoustic guitars and lounge beats morphed into upbeat, dance-able rock. The more McWilliams and Boykin worked together, the more they began surprising themselves. “It wasn’t like anything we had done before,” says Boykin. “We didn’t really limit ourselves and we didn’t really have an agenda.” read more from the source...

DAKAR & GRINSER

Artist / Band: DAKAR & GRINSER
Song (MP3): WILD ROMANCE
Album: TRIUMPH OF FLESH
File Under: Alternative Electro
Label: Disco B
Info: Unwittingly or not Dakar & Grinser personify the ugly side of rave culture. They’re thugs, purely and simply. Dakar’s lyrics are twisted and surrealistic, loaded with bizarre pop culture references, drug slang, and menacing sexuality. Appropriately, their sound is as convoluted. Their music relies heavily on the sound and rhythm of techno, spiked with '70s rock licks and swirling Moroder’s arpeggios. They’re so post-modern that they’re unique. They don’t sample, but they borrow melodies and sentences and in the process they commit rock blasphemy.read more from the source...

THE SOUTHLAND

Artist / Band: THE SOUTHLAND
Song (MP3): MILES
Album: INFLUENCE OF GEOGRAPHY
File Under: Indie pop
Label: Ruffworld Records
Info: The album is salvaged in several spots, especially on the ear candy and adventurous "Debris", but the heart of the album leaves you a bit cold, even if it tries its best to warm you with the California sun. It's good in parts, but a song like "Radio" or the equally mellow "Good Grief" is something I can really do without, thank you very much. read more from the source...

WINTERPILLS

Artist / Band: WINTERPILLS
Song (MP3): WANT THE WANT
Album: WINTERPILLS
File Under: Indie Melodic
Label: signature sounds
Info: Northampton's Winterpills play haunting, delicate, dynamic. room-hushingly beautiful music with aching melodies and acid lyrics. Think Elliott Smith, Cat Stevens, Iron & Wine, and the Innocence Mission all get drunk and fall asleep in Joni Mitchell's backyard. One of the finest debut albums of 2005. read more from the source...

KIDS THESE DAYS

Two years in the making. Ten songs. All These Interruptions is the debut album from Vancouver’s Kids These Days. read more from the source...

JOHN DUFILHO

Artist / Band: JOHN DUFILHO
Song (MP3): WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR
Album: JOHN DUFILHO
File Under: Singer-Songwriter
Label: Glurp
Info: After finding success with The Deathray Davies, singer/songwriter John Dufilho is releasing his first solo album. Though Davies is a rock band, Dufilhos self-titled solo debut is less of a rocker than a indie pop piece, on which he plays every instrument and handles all the production, writing and recording duties. The album opens with “I’m Gonna Stay Under These Covers Today,” a beautifully simplistic two-minute song that features just Dufilho and an acoustic guitar. Aside from the first track though the rest of the album features lush songs with Postal Service beats, Badly Drawn Boy keyboards, and Bright Eyes vocals. The songs feature catchy melodies and excellent craftsmanship. Dufilho’s vocals are handled excellently, on both low-key numbers like the opening track or on more up-tempo numbers with effects like “What Are You Waiting For?” Lyrically the album is clever and well written, such as on “Now I’m A Stick Figure,” which opens: “I don’t think it’s the same without you/ I run in circles, you run with squares.” Overall: Dufilho mixes great pop and indie rock to come up with an album that takes the best of artists like Badly Drawn Boy, Bright Eyes and the Postal Service. -pucknation.com

PATRICK PHELAN

Artist / Band: PATRICK PHELAN
Song (MP3): FAVOR
Album: COST
File Under: Singer-Songwriter
Label: JAGJAGUWAR
Info: Patrick Phelan's third full-length recording is called Cost. To Phelan, it is an understatement. For him, every opportunity explored is another opportunity forgone.More so than on previous Phelan records, Cost places an emphasis on the guttural. His voice and words take center stage. He is much less guarded on Cost than on previous records. There is no lack of desperation in these new songs, yet a hopeful tone is maintained throughout. Balance is the key. Emotion is the lock. And simplicity is the door. Like a finely-tuned architect, Phelan places all of his songs in their proper space, not letting them get crowded with unnecessary words or sounds. He also steers Cost from tipping too far in the "minimalist" direction, thanks in part to a bevy of guitar solos and to the abundance of true rock moments that occur throughout the record. read more from the source...

SUFFERING & THE HIDEOUS THIEVES

Artist / Band: SUFFERING & THE HIDEOUS THIEVES
Song (MP3): WILL ALWAYS FIND A WAY
Album: ASHAMED
File Under: Rock
Label: Lujo
Info: Jeff Sufferings 2001 release of Real Panic Formed was a strong first release for the Thieves collective. Suffering’s thematic groveling over moral decay was set to a sickly romantic orchestral sounding hangover. In ’03, Rats in Heaven gave a whole new meaning to the American tradition of the murder ballad. Like previous efforts, Ashamed still touches on depression, human depravity and redemption. But now more than ever, the ever rotating cast of the Thieves ensemble has truly captured the mood of the music by providing the appropriate backdrop for Sufferings maniacal rants. read more from the source...

BAUMER

Artist / Band: BAUMER
Song (MP3): HOW THE WEST 1

OKKERVIL RIVER

Artist / Band: OKKERVIL RIVER
Song (MP3): NO KEY NO PLAN
Album: Black Sheep Boy Appendix
File Under: Indie
Label: JAGJAGUWAR
Info: Seth went to my school in our town of 500 people in New Hampshire. My first encounter with him was sitting next to him on a school bus. He was eating Handi-Snacks and had clear braces, so the artificial cheese was all caught up in there with the crumby crackers. He and Alex Arcone and Chris Kimball transformed our tiny school into a theater of the surreal. They would crawl across the classroom floor mid-lecture to touch the social studies teacher lightly on the wingtip. "Loose pause!" one of them would say, and the group would collapse limp. "I'd like to tell the other teachers what you're doing, but I don't know what it is you're doing," said one teacher to Seth as he pushed him against the wall in fury.

GREG SUMMERLIN

Artist / Band: GREG SUMMERLIN
Song (MP3): YOUR FROWN'S MY FRIEND
Album: THE YOUNG METEORS
File Under: Indie / Powerpop / Rock
Label: SUPERPHONIC RECORDS
Info: Greg Summerlin, a great Southern singer-songwriter who I think you would like. For starters, he rocks. This is not folky stuff at all. The CD is called "The Young Meteors." It doesn't come out until June 14 and it is his second album. It's basic guitars-bass-drums pop/rock with a nice Brit-pop twist — an interesting blend of the Replacements, New Order (really!) and a little pop-punk a la Weezer. Somehow it works very well. There is one song on here that sounds more New Order than New Order's latest CD! Great stuff. This is indie-pop rock at its best (he is releasing it on his own label). I can tell this is going to be one that I listen to a lot this summer. read more from the source...
