CHAD VANGAALEN

Artist / Band: CHAD VANGAALEN
Song (MP3): ECHO TRAIN
Album: INFINIHEART
File Under: Indie
Label: SubPop
Info: Several years ago, a tiny stream of homemade CDs found their way into campus-radio libraries across the country and into the pockets of indie kids in southern Alberta. Enclosed in handmade cases, often with original artwork for every copy, they were issued in micro print-runs of 10 or 20 discs at a time by a persistent presence on the streets of Calgary: a young busker who had a new recording every few weeks, who didn't mind trading if you had no cash. read more from the source...

PAUL DUNCAN

Artist / Band: PAUL DUNCAN
Song (MP3): OIL IN THE FIELDS
Album: BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU CALL HOME
File Under: Singer- Songwriter, Rock, Pop
Label: Hometapes
Info: Paul Duncan released his debut, To An Ambient Hollywood, on Hometapes Records last year. The album’s an exquisite combining of acoustic and electronic sounds, that while released under Duncan’s name, features a long list of players lending their talents to the record. Recalling artists like the Sea and Cake, Duncan has created an album with a hushed ambiance, strings, horns and his acoustic guitar woven around just-above-a-whisper, bittersweet recollections.

GREAT LAKE SWIMMERS

Artist / Band: GREAT LAKE SWIMMERS
Song (MP3): VARIOUS STAGES
Album: BODIES AND MINDS
File Under: Indie Folk-Pop
Label: Misra
Info: Great Lake Swimmers return with a magnificent sophomore effort, Bodies and Minds. Filled with songs of heartbreak, pastoral yearning, and the search for spiritual transcendence, the album picks up where Great Lake Swimmers' critically acclaimed self-titled debut left off. While it still relies on gentle, thoughtful compositions and understated instrumentation, it shifts fluidly into the breezy harmonies and uptempo approach of '70s AM pop. Imagine if Steely Dan were fronted by Neil Young, or envision My Morning Jacket playing Jackson Browne classics -- Bodies and Minds could be the fruit of such collaborations.

SOLTERO

Artist / Band: SOLTERO
Song (MP3): FROM THE STATION
Album: Hell Train
File Under: Mean love songs
Label: three ring records
Info: Soltero writes mean love songs about the freeze and thaw, the hem and haw of a young heart. The recordings alternately feature the melancholy of Leonard Cohen and the full-band bravado of Neil Young. Some comparisons that are frequently made include Pavement, Silver Jews, and Yo La Tengo. The Boston Globe has even alleged that if Johnny Cash and Lee Hazelwood were to play together they would sound something like Soltero.Soltero has shared bills with The Mountain Goats, Of Montreal, Brother Danielson, Mirah, Mark Robinson, Calvin Johnson, Idaho, Songs:Ohia, and The Microphones, among others.Soltero is permanently Tim Howard and frequently others as well.

CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH

Artist / Band: CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH
Song (MP3): OVER AND OVER AGAIN
Album: CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH
File Under: Indie Pop
Label: CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH
Info: Clap Your Hands are a five-piece from Brooklyn who're known to break out both harp and harmonica. They've recently been garnering rave press in their home city, and, over just the past two weeks, burning up the internet like a vintage Lohan nipslip. The pundits are saying Wilco (not hearing it), Talking Heads (okay), and Neutral Milk Hotel (getting warmer), but if it checks in with a number of modern and classic new wave referents, the music sings for itself: Clap Your Hands traffics in melodic, exuberant indie rock that pairs the shimmering, wafting feel of Yo La Tengo with a singular vocal presence that sounds like Paul Banks attempting to yodel through Jeff Mangum's throat. Or imagine the Arcade Fire if their music were more fun-loving and less grave.

HOME OF THE LAME

Artist / Band: HOME OF THE LAME
Song (MP3): HOPE THAT YOU CAN STAY
Album: Here, of all places
File Under: Guitar Pop / Rock
Label: Grand Hotel van Cleef

BLOOD ON THE WALL

Artist / Band: BLOOD ON THE WALL
Song (MP3): MARY SUSAN
Album: Awesomer
File Under: Grimy Rock
Label: the social registry
Info: If you miss the nineties -- not the Spice Girls, 90210 nineties, but the Golden Age of grimy rock -- Blood on the Wall is the band for you. Think Pavement, The Pixies and Sonic Youth, but with a meaner edge -- drunken destruction parlayed into heavy pop hooks and a dark, lived-in sound. Awesomer was written by brother and sister Brad and Courtney Shanks, who play guitar and bass, respectively; Miggy from Ida handles the drums, and Nicholas Vernhes (Fiery Furnaces, Black Dice, Silver Jews) produced. Brad and Courtney take turns at the mic -- Brad sounds eerily like a young Frank Black and Courtney plays at being bored. The juxtaposition of their respective vocal styles makes for a seductive push-pull.

HEADLIGHTS

Artist / Band: HEADLIGHTS
Song (MP3): TOKYO
Album: THE ENEMIES EP
File Under: Indie Pop
Label: Polyvinyl Records
Info: Headlights began as a four-piece combo from Champaign, IL and features ex-Absinthe Blind (Parasol Records) and Maserati(Kindercore) members. Following the break up of Absinthe Blind in 2003, guitarist/vocalist Tristan Wraight toured with Athens, GA's Maserati while several other ex-Absinthe Blind members began writing and performing as the three-piece Orphans. Upon his return to Champaign in winter 2004, Wraight and Orphans' keyboardist/vocalist Erin Fein began collaborating on new material. After playing a few shows with Orphans, the band and Wraight decided to change the name, scrap some of the old material and begin anew as Headlights. In spring 2004, they entered the studio to record their debut release, The Enemies EP.read more from the source...

NEW BLACK

Artist / Band: NEW BLACK
Song (MP3): KHALIL
Album: Time Attack
File Under: Garage, Punk
Label: Thick Records
Info: Chicago’s New Black literally came out of nowhere with their self-titled debut in 2004, grabbing the attention of America’s indie music bizsters, journalists and record-shelf searchers alike. But unlike many of their counterparts, who would navigate a path back and forth across the US attempting to gain a following, New Black would debut a new sound to their European neighbors first. In fact, by the end of the tour, the band would have played more countries than it had US cities. In a year’s time, just before the writing and recording of their second record, the band would be invited to open for the likes of VHS or Beta, Electrelane, Secret Machines and Coachwhips. Rough Trade would include them on its Best of 2004 Compilation alongside Elliot Smith, Sonic Youth, Bloc Party and more. The touring and accolades, as well as personal exposure to their peers would help distill an even newer black to its explosive core.

THE DIALS

Artist / Band: THE DIALS
Song (MP3): PHONE LINE
Album: Flex Time
File Under: Garage, Power Pop, Punk
Label: Latest Flame Records
Info: The foundation is laid by the dynamic interplay of Rebecca's and Patti's epic bubblegum songs of disenchantment, frustration, and making out behind the grocery store. Add on top of that the degenerate barroom-floor sounds of Emily's junky genre-bending farfisa (is it Monoman or Steve Nieve? Who cares when it's this good?). Then tie it all together with Doug's ferociously flurried and smile-inducing fury on drums. Serpentine guitar B-52isms and Rezillos-worthy bass lines infused with raw Marshall crunch and total high-energy exuberance create a rock & roll tsunami that'll blow your panties off. read more from the source...

SOFT

Artist / Band: SOFT
Song (MP3): HIGHER
Album: Soft EP
File Under: Rock / Pop
Label: Self-Released
Info: Reminiscent enough to be familiar, yet fresh enough to be exciting, SOFT is the sound of five guys making one big sound: spacey, shimmering, beautiful rock music. Formed just over a year ago, the genesis of the band was an organic one with mutual friends from areas as divergent as Wisconsin, Illinois, Texas, and Connecticut coming together to do what seemed most natural to them: make music. The lack of a stated musical blueprint produced not the expected chaos but a surprising cohesion, and the song writing began. Months of perfectionist tweaking and fine-tuning culminated with a trip to a haunted ranch in upstate New York, which in turn yielded the five songs that eventually landed on the band's debut EP. Sold out shows followed as did support slots for the likes of Mark Gardner and Hard Fi. read more from the source...

HER SPACE HOLIDAY

Artist / Band: HER SPACE HOLIDAY
Song (MP3): A MATCH MADE IN TEXAS
Album: The Past Presents The Future
File Under: Indie Pop
Label: Wichita Recordings
Info: Marc Bianchi began recording under the moniker Her Space Holiday in 1996. It started as a simple affair..just a four track, a couple of cheap microphones, a beat up drum set, a guitar, and the desire to make music on his own. It was never Marc's intention to release any of his songs, in fact, his main focus at the time was actually spent on releasing other artists (Flowchart, Orange Cake Mix, Aspera, etc) albums on his now defunct Audio Information Phenomena label. It wasn't until he was approached to do a 12" EP by Chocolate River Industries that he realized that his music may make it beyond the safety of his bedroom. Since the release of the Audio Astronomy EP, HSH has worked with a handful of different labels including Tigerstyle, No Karma, Motorway, Clover, Brave Noise, Skylab Operations, and Mush. read more from the source...

MARTHA BERNER

Artist / Band: MARTHA BERNER
Songs (MP3): MARY LATELY / Lady of Plenty / GOOD COMPANY
Album: ...this side of yesterday
File Under: indie folk-rock
Label: Machine Records
Info: Ever since the cover art of the twelve-inch vinyl album has been shrunk down to a tiny, square CD cover that can fit into the palm of your hand, album art hasn't seemed as important in the whole creative package as it once did before. But, oddly enough, one of the first things that becomes immediately apparent after listening to Chicago-based Martha Berner's lush full-length debut ...this side of yesterday, is how well the cover art represents this enchanting collection of beautifully performed and arranged numbers. The warm orange and red hues on the cover not only mirror the warmth and heart that beats so strongly throughout these ten tracks, but the ornate Victorian border accents also tie in with a similar age-old beauty buried deep within these acoustic-driven numbers. Even the photo of Martha herself - a slightly fuzzy image of her bundled in a coat, scarf and hat with her eyes closed as if in deep contemplation or even a trance - immediately lends comparisons to the many thought-provoking, introspective and, at times, even haunting compositions represented here. read more from the source...

SPIELERFRAU

Artist / Band: SPIELERFRAU
Song (MP3): MERINGUE
Album: The Sad Part.
File Under: Dark Pop
Label: None
Info: Michael Idov - from Latvia - is definitely interested in the question of language, and not just because he writes for several American publications. His clever and refined lyrics carried by a smokey baritone enrich the already extremely interesting sound of his band Spielerfrau, which - by the way - is not a Latvian word.

ROCKY VOTOLATO

Artist / Band: ROCKY VOTOLATO
Song (MP3): WHITE DAISY PASSING
Album: Makers
File Under: Folk
Label: barsuk
Info: Texas born Votolato formed Waxwing, a nationally acclaimed punk rock band, in 1996. Common to any prolific and diverse songwriter, Rocky discovered that his writing began moving into new territories – some of which proved too delicate for his more bombastic efforts with Waxwing. When Rocky felt it was appropriate to find a fresh outlet for this new material that fell outside of his traditional rock approach, he recruited the help of some of Seattle's finest musicians – including players in the bands Red Stars Theory, Sharks Keep Moving, The Blood Brothers, And Rosie Thomas – and the production of engineer Matt Bayles (Pearl Jam, Botch, Murder City Devils, Hayden). With this team, Rocky pushed off in 2001 with a healthy start at building a solid solo discography with the ornate and focused Burning My Travels Clean.read more from the source...

MOHAWK LODGE

Song (MP3): MAKING MUSIC
Album: Rare Birds
File Under: Folk
Label: white whale
Info: What does "dirty folk" sound like? Check out The Mohawk Lodge debut "rare birds" to find out! The Mohawk Lodge is the bastard child of Vancouver's Ryder Havdale. What began as a solo project quickly became a full blown 7 member band as members of Kids These Days and Second Narrows jumped on board. "rare birds" was recorded to 8-track late winter - early spring 2004 in cabins and homes. read more from the source...

Album: The Tigers Have Spoken
File Under: Alternative Country
Label: anti
Info: Neko Case (born September 8, 1970 in Alexandria, Virginia) is an American singer and songwriter. Her music is frequently called alternative country, though Case tends to shy away from the label. She recorded and toured as Neko Case & Her Boyfriends before switching to her own name. read more from the source...

THE JOGGERS

Artist / Band: THE JOGGERS
Song (MP3): ERA PRISON
Album: With a Cape and a Cane
File Under: Indie
Label: Startime Records
Info: If you get started talking about the Joggers it takes along time. So you either have to keep it short or dig in. So, the following is short bio and a lengthier, more revealing, interview. All questions will be answered in both — depending on your interest. After receiving glowing praise across the board for 2003's "Solid Guild" StarTime debut, including the dominant Rolling Stone, the hipster Filter, the indie Stop Smiling, as well as The Washington Post and touring with the likes of the Hot Hot Heat, Weird War, Ted Leo, and label mates the French Kicks, the Joggers needed a break, not just a breather. Lead singer Ben Whitesides found himself on stage singing, but no words came out — a complete breakdown ensued later that evening. So the band shipped him up to his parents place in New England and returned to Portland feeling tentative about their future. The next few months were spent both with grappling with those issues and casting them away. read more from the source...

WRENS

Artist / Band: WRENS
Song (MP3): THIS BOY IS EXHAUSTED
Album: "The Meadowlands"
File Under: Indie
Label: Absolutely Kosher
Info: The wrens get a call in 1989 off their first demo asking if they want to open for comeback band - The Fixx. The catch is that they must sell 1000 tickets. The wrens fail to sell even 6 tickets and sadly, the Fixx cancel. The ‘80s draw to a close.
The wrens get a gig as the house band on the on Cape May/Delaware Ferry. The wrens later get fired after performing the Pixies’ “debaser” to the mostly senior citizen crowd. The wrens move to a house in Secaucus, NJ. (The wrens will continue to live together and record at home for the next 10 years) read more from the source...

AZEEM

Artist / Band: AZEEM
Song (MP3): SHOW BUSINESS
Album: SingleFile Under: hip hop
Label: bomb hip hop
Info: "This is one of the best albums of the year by one of the hottest MCs I've heard in quite a while. This guy has the goods, and he's not afraid to show up just about every MC this side of MF Doom as the ciphers they are. Azeem is just a wonderfully gifted MC, fully in command of his abilities and blessed with the type of consistently phat beats that most MTV rappers would kill for. He seems to be that rare member of the hip-hop nation who understands the art and science of true lyricism - the poetry and the rhythm, the use of simple simile and metaphor to create complex effect, and the power of direct honesty to carry true sentiment. This is as fine a rap album as you'll hear all year." read more from the source...

NAC ONE

Artist / Band: NAC ONE

Info: Bay Area graffiti artist and emcee Nac One (Berkeley, CA.) has been appearing on mix tapes and performing with artists like the Fugees, Nas, Abstract Rude, Freestyle Fellowship and Living Legends since the early 90's. In 2001, with his graffiti/emcee crew FSC, he released the independent classic cd Oneness. read more from the source...

SOLE

Artist / Band: SOLE
Song (MP3): SELF INFLICTED WOUNDS
Album: live from rome
File Under: Hip Hop
Label: Anticon
Info: sole was hatched the year Elvis overdosed—1977—in the far northeastern city of Portland, Maine. He recorded his first demo in 1992, which featured such unhits as “Cops Ain’t Shit,” whose first lines snarled, “I’m still pissed about Rodney,/ yeah, pissed is what they got me.” For reasons he chooses not to recall, he shopped the demo to Entertainment Resources International, the management company responsible for Da Brat, Kris Kross and Xscape. There was serious initial interest in what may have been the first great white kiddie rapper, and they flew him to Florida to record a few songs. When sole idealistically insisted on DJ Premier beats and they could offer him but Jermaine Dupri remixes, however, the deal gracefully fell through. Soon after, at 15, sole regrouped and with a new crew—45 Below Records, which included anticonian alias—and a new DJ—Cuz the Highlander, who in later years emerged as a rare record guru and occasional producer (under the name Moodswing9) in the Bay Area—and released an album under the name Northern Exposure. That album, Mad Skillz and Unpaid Billz, was a mishmash of early 90’s hip-hop like Lord Finesse and Black Moon and sold upwards of 300 copies. A year later, fresh from this unsuccess and flush with savings from his after-school job at McDonalds, sole pressed up his first 12” and freely gave it away at the 1995 Gavin Convention to little effect. 1996 brought another sole group, Live Poets, and a new album, “What’s It All About?” While unmistakably beholden to classic East Coast rap, the album began to exhibit the considerable influence experimental and underground Los Angeles rap, circulated through long distance trading of hissy tapes. The rhyme schemes showed cracks and surprising fissures, and the lyric content veered wildly between the battle raps on which sole had been nourished and a more original strain of poeticized language delivered with compressed emotional force. One song in particular, “Think Twice,” with its jangly setting, loosened song structure, and lyrics in which sole’s personal conflicts and ambivalences took center stage, was sole as the sole he would soon become. read more from the source...

13 & GOD

Artist / Band: 13 & GOD
Song (MP3): MEN OF STATION
Album: 13 & god
File Under: Indie Pop
Label: Anticon
Info: The details are still hazy, but somewhere outside of Toronto in early 2004, on a stretch of uninspired highway leading to the U.S./Canadian border, a computer onboard a large tour bus spontaneously combusted. Some point the finger at the driver (an aspiring reality show auteur), others blame a faulty battery, and most hold a small stuffed fox accountable. But however it happened, themselves and The Notwist were stranded. Dates were cancelled. Meals were skipped. Shady motels were booked in below-freezing weather. The fox was dead. It was the fifth breakdown of their joint tour series of minor disasters distant somewheres, a love was born of nervous laughter, shared admiration, axle grease and roasting circuitry. read more from the source...

WHY?

Artist / Band: WHY?
Song (MP3): SANDDOLLARS
Album: Sanddollars
File Under: Indie Pop
Label: Anticon
Info: Matt Meldon lived on Ohio Street near the University, in a little apartment adorned with batik wall tapestries and discarded honey bear bongs. He too was born and raised in Queen City, and was now studying jazz alongside the elder Wolf brother. For obvious reasons, he had a ponytail. Childhood was relatively simple: Pops worked and Ma watched Sis, while Matt listened to Jimi. He smashed his first guitar because it was too hard to play; today he shreds with masturbatory virtuosity. Matt was the last of the four to make the move out to California.read more from the source...

DIOS MALOS

Artist / Band: DIOS MALOS
Song (MP3): FEELS GOOD BEING SOMEBODY
Album: Dios Malos
File Under: Alternative
Label: Star Time Records
Info: Where we’re from has a lot to do with our approach to our music, and with who we are. We’re all from the South Bay in Los Angeles. That’s our bond. We’re from a different part of L.A — an L.A. that is usually disregarded for its artistic contributions to the city. The South Bay isn’t the suburbs you see in movies or T.V. It’s beachfront ghettos, airports, refineries, ports, you name it. It’s a pretty diverse part of town — Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Polynesians — all in the same schools and working the same jobs at the mall. We’re friends with surfers, skaters, gangsters, musicians and 9 to 5ers we grew up with. A couple of us grew up near the fabulous forum in Inglewood, home of the Showtime Lakers, minutes from the Beach Boys’ childhood home in Hawthorne. A couple of us grew up near some of the prettiest tide pools and cliffs in Southern California, minutes away from where Black Flag practiced and played their first shows. There’s definitely a little musical history here, and we’re proud of that. . read more from the source...

Saboteur

Artist / Band: Saboteur
Song (MP3): Le Saboteur Produit Son Coutea
Album: Saboteur
File Under: Rock
Label: end sounds
Info: Saboteur harkens back to a day in the not too distant past when lyrical intelligence and musical proficiency was not the exception in punk rock. They blend the existing facets of their other musical projects with tough guy pop punk and socio-political lyrics. The songs are loud, well crafted and instantly quotable. Influences range from Gang of Four to Rocket From the Crypt, and they're recommended if you like those bands as well as The Clash, Alkaline Trio and Queens of the Stone Age.
Saboteur began as a two-piece rock outfit writing songs in a Dallas loft in 2003. Angular punk rhythms barreling underneath melodies about the socio-economic state of the times filled the bomb shelter turned rehearsal space. Justin Wilson, singer and songwriting guru for rock beast Red Animal War, and Steve Visneau, drummer and spirit of punk-speedsters Slowride, were fresh off European tours that shared dates. After bouncing more than a few ideas off each other one night in Amsterdam, songs poured forth. The groups were far beyond the mark of "brother bands," booking tours and local shows together since their conception and releasing a split EP on Deep Elm Records in 2002.

Song (MP3): FUTURE
Album: Future 12"
File Under: Electro
Label: Modular Recordings
Info:Cut Copy is the musical lovechild of Melbourne human giraffe and 70’s MOR fetishist Dan Whitford. A project born in the early 21st century, Cut Copy was originally more of a solo project for Dan to exercise his love of sampling and instrumental hip hop, before he took a turn for the dancefloor and released the I Thought Of Numbers EP in 2001. Following it’s release and a live mishap that saw his sampler fried, Dan recruited a posse of friends for the recording of his sparkling debut album, Bright Like Neon Love. Song (MP3): ROSE
Album: WHOMADEWHO
File Under: Electro / Indie
Label: Gomma
Info: Danish trio Who Made Who could have easily played a big part in this paradigm had they only surfaced a bit sooner. The band’s debut self-titled full length, while not as distinct as the work of some of its more prolific peers, shows a lot of proficiency in the realms of both rock and dance. This is somewhat of an oddity within the genre. read more from the source...

LA LAQUE

Artist / Band: LA LAQUE
Song (MP3): SECRET
Album: Single
File Under: French Indie Pop
Label: Romantic Air
Info: Fronted by a sexy siren teleported straight from a Godard casting call, La Laque explodes in a beautiful riot of beats and shrieks, leaving only a cloud of thick Gauloises smoke in its wake. It sounds like it wouldn't work. But, like so many things French, somehow it inexplicably does. Call it that certain je ne sais quoi. read more from the source...

KINGSBURY MANX

Artist / Band: KINGSBURY MANX
Song (MP3): HARNESS AND WHEEL
Album: Fast Rise and Fall of the South
File Under:
Label: Yep Roc
Info: Over the past few years, the North Carolina-based Kingsbury Manx have quietly built up an unassailable discography. Their fourth full-length, The Fast Rise and Fall of the South continues the streak. Produced by Wilco's Mikael Jorgensen, the album retains the mysterious, earthy sound of the band's previous work, while adding a more deliberately arranged and mature sensibility to the proceedings. The result is about as close as we'll ever get to a pre-breakdown Syd Barrett recording an album with Notorious Byrds Brothers-era Byrds.

FRUIT BATS

Artist / Band: FRUIT BATS
Song (MP3): SILENT LIFE
Album: Spelled In Bones
File Under: Folk Pop
Label: Sub Pop
Info: Eric Johnson has been making experimental and pop-inflected folk-rock with increasing compositional and thematic complexity since Califone/Perishable Records founders Tim Rutili and Ben Massarella prompted him to explore his craft in the mid-'90s. Johnson's recordings, enriched by contributions from an ever-revolving cast of Chicagoan characters (the current lineup includes I Rowboat's Dan Strack and percussionist John Byce) used a melancholy hand to touch on love and the human experience on 2001's Perishable debut, Echolocation, and 2003's Sub Pop-released Mouthfuls. Around the release of Mouthfuls, Harp magazine described the Fruit Bats as residing somewhere on a continuum between Califone and The Shins, combining, "...the latter's widescreen vision with the former's melodic knack to create something at once familiar and new." read more from the source...

Michael Penn

Artist / Band: Michael Penn
Song (MP3): Walter Reed
Album: Mr. Hollywood Jr., 1947
File Under: Singer Sonwriter
Label: spin art records
Info: One of the most acclaimed singer/songwriters to emerge during the late 1980s, Michael Penn was seemingly destined for a career in show business. The oldest son of director Leo Penn and actress Eileen Ryan, he was born August 1, 1958 in New York City's Greenwich Village area; within a year, the family relocated to Los Angeles, and there Penn's younger siblings Sean (later recognized among the finest actors of his generation) and Chris (a noted character actor acclaimed for his work in features like Reservoir Dogs) were born. While his brothers focused on acting, Michael turned to music, and following an early obsession with the Beatles learned to play guitar; by high school he joined his first band, covering hits by performers including the Rolling Stones and David Bowie. He soon turned to writing his own songs as well. read more from the source...

MY MORNING JACKET

Artist / Band: MY MORNING JACKET
Song (MP3): OFF THE RECORD
Album: Z
File Under: Rock
Label: ATO Records
Info: My Morning Jacket hail from the city of Louisville, Kentucky, an odd metro-suburban mix of stark industry and fine thoroughbreds and rock and roll fevers. "It's a place with no labels," James says. "It's not the South, it's not Chicago, and you don't think of it as you think of New York or LA. It has some Southern romanticism to it, but also a Northern progressivism, this weird urban island in the middle of the state of Kentucky that has always provided a fertile, often dark, bed. For us, Louisville and the surrounding areas are the center of massive creativity and massive weirdness. The place has its flaws: You move away, but you're always going to come back." read more from the source...

Valencia

Artist / Band: Valencia
Song (MP3): The Space Between
Album: This Could Be A Possibility
File Under: Punk Rock
Label: I surrender records
Info: Philadelphia's Valencia knows that the art of signing a record deal isn't always a matter of who-you-know, but who-is-listening-to-you-at-3:00am. A very early March 2005 morning marked I Surrender Record's introduction to Valencia. An unsolicited three-track demo tape by the City of Brotherly Love brethren found its way into I Surrender's Rob Hitt's tape deck and the connection was instant. read more from the source...

KINSKI

Artist / Band: KINSKI
Song (MP3): HIDING DRUGS IN THE TEMPLE (PART 2)
Album: Alpine Static
File Under: Indie Rock
Label: Sub Pop
Info: Combining avant-garde experimentalism picked up from their interest in composers like Terry Riley and Steve Reich with a fondness for '70s Krautrock pioneers like Ash Ra Tempel, and the gut-level thrust, heft and swing of Black Sabbath, the Groundhogs and '60s/'70s Mexican psych band Los Dug Dug's, Kinski have established themselves as Seattle's foremost psych rock explorers. And, they have toured extensively throughout the U.S., Europe, and Japan, including tours with Mission of Burma, Oneida, Comets on Fire, Acid Mothers Temple and ...Trail of the Dead. Blender magazine on their last album: "...they follow measured guitar burn with bone-rattling explosions, and roll mesmerizing tension into colossal release." read more from the source...

Song (MP3): WORDS THAT I EMPLOY
Album: COACH SAID NOT TO EP
File Under: Indie Rock
Label: Self-released
Info: "Coach Said Not To" is a Minneapolis rock foursome that deliberately tries to defy categorization. The band finds great fulfillment in making every song sound different in some way. Coheed and Cambria

Artist / Band: Coheed and Cambria
Song (MP3): Devil In Jersey City
Album: The Second Stage Turbine Blade [re-issue]
File Under: dark indie rock
Label: equal vision
Info: For three years now, the New York group has been releasing dynamic, multi-faceted albums that are as infectious as they are innovative. Their songs are packed with undeniable hooks and contemporary textures, but their sonic vistas are reminiscent of great progressive and atmospheric bands from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Best of all, like the musicians themselves, the mix is neither pretentious nor alienating. read more from the source...

"The art-rock majesty of The Coral Sea emerges breathtaking, it steals from your soul, unsurpassed in this part of the world." Well, The Santa Barbara Independent aint kidding either, The Coral Sea’s debut is a hypnotic and mellow dreamrock album that calls to mind classic albums by Bowie, Pink Floyd and The Beatles, with current comparisons ranging from Yo La Tengo’s melodic blue-streak zoom-pop to Radiohead’s impassioned layered vocal/guitar impressionism. read more from the source...

Apollo Sunshine

Artist / Band: Apollo Sunshine
Song (MP3): Today Is The Day ( Clean version)
Album: Apollo Sunshine
File Under: Rock / Soul / Psychedelic
Label: spin art records
Info: Since the release of their 2003 spinART debut album, Katonah, Apollo Sunshine has thrilled audiences. Their unique and eclectic sound - from avant-garde noise experiment to ultra-melodic pop, to rock, to punk (sometimes all within one song), combined with quite possibly one of the best live shows you will ever see (a controlled rock chaos of pedal steel, guitar, bass, double necked guitar/bass combo, two handtaped-together keyboards/samplers, percussion, drums and how the hell does he play bass with his left hand, keyboard with his right and sing lead vocal?!), have left audiences screaming, dedicated, breathless and unable to hold still!read more from the source...

VOICST

Artist / Band: VOICST
Song (MP3): PORN
Album: 11-11
File Under: Pop Rock
Label: Duurtlang
Info: These guys like to work around the clock, just like their fellow countryman Tom Holkenborg of Junkie XL. Explains Tjeerd, 'It's called 11-11, for various reasons. We were working on 11th Avenue from 11 in the morning till 11 in the nighttime. And in the last two weeks we were working 24 hours a day, from 11 in the morning till 11 the very next day.' ADHD we already said. And you can hear the energy. You wonder how three men can make so much noise together. And what you get is so extremely relevant in today's rock. You can't stop listening to this album from 11-11. From album opener Whatever You Want From Life till the closing track Enjoy The Kickback: 11-11 is absolutely Totally Wired. The Fall's last words Can't You See? read more from the source...

TOM VEK

Artist / Band: TOM VEK
Song (MP3): AIN'T SAYING MY GOODBYES
Album: WE HAVE SOUND
File Under: From Garage Rock to Pop
Label: Startime Records
Info: Tom Vek must have been beaten by lead guitar lines as a kid-- he avoids them like a sore subject. And that's perfect, because it gives me something to talk about. He wants to call himself "raw garage rock energy," go ahead. Nobody's exactly guarding the doors to the genre these days, but Mr. Vek managed to slip in without the one fuck-all must-have accessory. No, not a Blackberry-- I'm talking hammy riffs.

ROGUE WAVE

Artist / Band: ROGUE WAVE
Song (MP3): PUBLISH MY LOVE
Album: Descended Like Vultures
File Under: Indie Pop, Post Wave
Label: Sub Pop
Info: This is where Rogue Wave, the band, really gets started. As Oakland-based singer/songwriter/arranger Zach Rogue puts it, "this record is the sound of four people's ideas colliding." Descended Like Vultures, Rogue Wave's second full-length for Sub Pop, is a velvety, darkly dichotomous album: pop vs. despair; hope vs. realism. Whereas Rogue's '04 release, Out of the Shadow, was for all intents and purposes a solo project, Descended Like Vultures finds Zach Rogue's unapologetic hooks and soaring melodies built up skyscraper-high by bandmates and mulit-instrumentalists Pat Spurgeon, Gram LeBron and Evan Farrell, who have grown close and road-seasoned thanks to a year of intensive international touring with The Shins, The Helio Sequence, TV on the Radio, and Mates of State. read more from the source...
